July Blooms at Tryon Palace

Happy July! It was a dry hot start to summer but hopefully we'll get a few cooler days and more rain this month! The magnolias, hydrangeas and pomegranates are bursting forth into bloom! During the early morning- check out the kitchen garden for sunflowers, leek blooms, apples and awesome heirlooms galore! In the heat of the day, cool off with a walk through the Wilderness under the gorgeous magnolias. When you’re ready for more sun, check out the awesome annuals in the Latham and Carraway Gardens- the bananas are a garden staff favorite! Our July garden lecture series, Saturday, July 9th, features Bryce Lane, three-time Emmy Award winning television personality, presenting “History of Gardening: How Cultures, Events, and People Made Gardening What it is Today.” Who is considered the father of American Horticulture and why? How did the greenhouse get it’s start? How did the tulip end up in Holland? Come join us as we learn about the historical events, peoples, and cultures that helped to make gardening what it is today. There are countless stories about how plants were discovered, gardening techniques invented, and new ideas conceived. By deepening our understanding and appreciation for garden history, we will, in turn, be better gardeners ourselves! This lecture begins at 10:30 AM in Cullman Performance Hall at the North Carolina History Center. This program is generally funded by Mitchell Hardware.

If you’re looking for an outside hobby and way to give back to your community, consider joining us as a garden volunteer! We are looking for Master Gardeners, Horticulturists, Garden Enthusiasts, General Yard Workers, and Carpenters. Some background in gardening is great but none is necessary, just a willingness to learn.
