Dr. Phillips Enjoys Lunch With Local Business and Community Leaders

Last Friday, District Superintendent Dr. Stephen Phillips, Human Resources Director Scott Linenberger, and School Board Chair Dave Brown met with local business and civic leaders over lunch to talk in-depth and answer questions about Newberg Public Schools. The goal of this meeting was to begin creating long-term dialogue between the business community and Newberg Public Schools. At this lunch, the group spoke about ways to grow existing partnerships and create new ones.

Dr. Phillips asked, “What can we do for you? How can we, Newberg Public Schools, assist you?”

He expressed his gratitude to everyone who attended the lunch and went on to say that he considers it an honor to work alongside them for the betterment of our schools and community.

“We want to thank Elise Yarnell, Lindsay Berschauer, Kristen Stoller, Bill Rosacker, Lisa Thompson, Ethan Headley, Alvin Elbert, Julie Peterson, and Robert Molzahn for your time and input. We look forward to working with you and getting to know you better!”

Thank you to the Ford Family Foundation for the community engagement grant that made this lunch possible.

Also, thank you to Rosmarino Osteria Italiana for hosting us and serving such delicious food!

Joan Austin 2nd Graders Play with Robotics

It’s never too early to learn about robotics. Recently, Joan Austin 2nd graders in Carol Gallagher’s class spent some time with Chris Hesselbein, our STEM TOSA. He helped them set-up their new robots! First they had to learn how to code. Then, working in pairs the students coded their robots to do tasks like move around an eraser, move through a maze, and even race each other.

Here are pictures of the students (first coding) then testing out the robots to see if they needed to adjust their coding to get the robots through a maze or around a track.

CHEHALEM ONLINE ACADEMY IS BUILDING IMPORTANT BRIDGES WITHIN NEWBERG AND BEYOND

Christy Smith has so many gold medals, she’s actually lost count.

You won’t find her highlight reels in any footage from London, Sydney, Tokyo nor Athens.

Christy Smith, an elementary teacher with the Chehalem Online Academy (COA), receives her gold medals in the smiles and through the sense of accomplishment of her students. This includes students in her class currently, but also the scores of other families she’s encountered as part of COA.

“Dear Mrs. Smith. Thank you for being my teacher. I love you,” one student wrote on a piece of blue construction paper she keeps in the classroom.

That’s a gold medal.

A Note From Superintendent Phillips on New School Start Times

Dear Newberg Families--

As promised, here are the new start times for the 2023-24 school year (please see attached document). The 12 month process that led to this calendar update has involved staff and parent surveys, bus company practicalities, and hours of administrative time and meetings. Collectively, we came to a decision as to what start times will best serve both the district and our K-12 students. In an effort to be sensitive to everyone’s busy schedules, we are giving you these start times now in hopes that you will have plenty of time to prepare yourself and your family for the upcoming school year. We appreciate your patience with our process and look forward to implementing these new start times with you.

There will still be a one hour late start on Wednesdays.

Thank you,

Stephen W. Phillips, PhD

Superintendent
