Location

Tres Equis - Turrialba - Cartago

The iconic Finca Tres Equis has 318 hectares (785 acres) of extension. It is surrounded by exuberant nature, spectacular views of the Turrialba Volcano and has a privileged access to the beautiful Pacuare River. This is a unique property in the region.

The road from San José to the farm is a 100% asphalt which allows any type of vehicle to reach the farm. Two main roads can be taken, either the number 10 through Turrialba or the 32 Limón road taking a detour at Siquirres.

The following are some average transfer times to main touristic destinations. Puerto Viejo/Caribean Sea - 2 and a half hours, La Fortuna/Arenal - 3 hours, La Pavona/Tortuguero - 2 hours, Airport Juan Santa María - 3 hours, Dominical/South Pacific - 5 hours.

Very close to the farm, top education facilities in the area include: CATIE (Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza) and the University of Costa Rica just 30 minutes away in the town of Turrialba; and less than an hour away EARTH University located in Guacimo.

The front part of the farm extends 2 kilometers, right next to the number 10 road Turrilaba-Siquirres. Conveniently located bus stops are right in front of the entrance and the Tres Equis village center is just 500 meters away where supermarkets and other stores can be found.

Zoning in the farm is well defined by the characteristics present in each area. For example; crop areas including almost two hectares of organic coffee in its fourth year of production with 2 varieties of coffee; Obata and Costa Rica 95. Additional areas are used to grow smaller and different types of crops.

The areas cultivated with cocoa belong to the German company Rausch Chocolate with 32 hectares of crops. Rausch has an operation center on the farm and its own workers to take care of the crops.

Services + Roads + Infrastructure

Services

All basic services are present, with access to water, electricity, telephone and broadband connection. In addition, an agreement with the local entity MINAE; allows the use of an spring water source to supply liquid to the lowest part of the farm closer to the Pacuare River.

Roads

A main gravel road runs through the Finca from the entrance to the Pacuare River. It has a distance of 5 kilometers (3.1 miles). Additionally, there are several secondary roads of gravel or dirt that help reach other areas of the farm.

Trails

A network of several kilometers composed of trails and paths traverses the farm in different parts. They are used regularly for horseback riding tours, hiking or to visit the forests and specific locations inside the property.

Wildlife

Finca Tres Equis has more than 270 hectares (665 acres) of secondary and regenerated forest; with extraordinary biodiversity. For almost 25 years, the entire forest has been protected for the benefit of the flora and fauna of the area. Its location within the Barbilla-Destierro biological sub-corridor also known as "El Paso del Jaguar" and adjacent to the Cabécar Indigenous Reserve; gives it a privileged spot and is home to hundreds of bird species, mammals, reptiles, insects, and an immense variety of plants and trees that are the delight of biologists, botanists and visitors of the farm.

There are currently 236 hectares of forest under a protection regime through a conservation plan with ICE-BID-FONAFIFO. This contract is currently in its 5th year and could be extended for 5 more years. This yields an annual income to help with the maintenance costs of the farm.

Tourism

ECOToURISM

The touristic nature of the farm is undeniable. The direct access to the Pacuare River - number one in Costa Rica and one of the top 10 in the world for rafting - attracts thousands of tourists every year. In addition to its natural beauty and the possibility of practicing horseback riding, or walking the trails, enjoying wildlife, the views of the Turrialba Volcano....all of this makes the guests and visitors fall in love with Finca Tres Equis. With over 290 species of birds, the farm is one of the top hot spots in the Cartago province.

The Pacuare River offers the best class III-IV rapids in the country and is also considered one of the 10 best rivers in the world for rafting because of the scenic beauty that it offers throughout the journey.

Working Permits

All the legal permits, the Municipality Patent and the Ministry of Health function permits are up to date to provide lodging services and tours. This also gives the property the feasibility to build and develop any tourism related activities like building more cabins or an eco lodge if desired.

Without the community and its people, Finca Tres Equis is nothing; we are friends and we want to give them the possibility to improve their lives and ours working together. That is why we perform different along side with them like offering a Christmas party for the poor kids, tree planting campaigns, provide land for women to cultivate, and also open our doors to local universities for field trips and research projects.
