107th Met Open Championship Presented By Callaway

August 23-25 | Bethpage Black | Farmingdale, NY

The Met Open is the third oldest Open championship in the country, following the U.S. and Western Opens. Until World War II, the Met Open was considered one of the "major tournaments" on the professional circuit, in part because it offered one of the richest purses. It attracted many of the country's top players and the winner was usually selected to the Ryder Cup team. The event became a financial burden for the MGA and it was discontinued in 1941. Eight years later, the Met Open was reinstated as a three-day tournament with a one-day Pro-Am component. The trophy, still awarded today, was donated by former MGA President Walker L. Trammell. In 2021, Andrew Svoboda of Engineers won the Met Open at Hudson National Golf Club, the third Met Open title of his career. Svoboda, who shot -10/200 over three rounds, finished two strokes ahead of runner-up Tom Lovelady, who finished the tournament 8-under par. This summer, Bethpage Black will host the Met Open for the fourth time in club history, most recently hosting the event in 2010 when Bob Rittberger claimed the victory.

In just a handful of years, the MGA Senior Masters Tournament has become a popular and competitive championship for amateurs age 65 and older. In 2021, George Zahringer III of Deepdale Golf Club won the event for the second straight year and for the third time in four years. The MGA will partner with The Stanwich Club in Greenwich, CT to host an annual, high-level invitational for male and female golfers on a national basis. The Farrell will consist of 18 holes of on-site stroke play qualifying, from which the low 16 competitors will advance to match play in divisions for men, women, and seniors. The Farrell will be an MGA Player of the Year points-eligible event and a World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) counting event. Formal invitations will be extended to competitors with a high-level national competitive resume by The Farrell selection committee, led by the event’s co-chairs, former Stanwich President Ken Dardis and MGA Executive Director Brian Mahoney. Select applications will be accepted from golfers with an official World Handicap System (WHS) Handicap Index not exceeding 4.0. This championship honors the legacy of longtime Stanwich head professional Billy Farrell. Farrell was the first-ever Head Golf Professional at the club, a role which he held from 1964 until his retirement in 2000. He passed away in May 2020 at the age of 85.

The tournament is a two-woman team event and each player must have an active USGA Handicap Index that does not exceed (28.0) at the time the team attempts to qualify at the club level. 20th French - American Challenge MGA vs. Ligue de Paris

October 24-26 | Quaker Ridge Golf Club | Scarsdale, NY

The MGA entered the “transatlantic” arena in 1990 with the founding of the French/American Challenge for Fred’s Cup. Named after its sponsor, the international jeweler Fred Joaillier, it pits teams of men and women representing the MGA/WMGA against the Ligue de Paris. The first competition was held at Chantilly Golf Club outside Paris. Since then, it has alternated annually between France and the Met Area, having been played over some of the Met Area’s and Paris’ most outstanding courses. A spot on this prestigious team is one of the most sought after positions by Met Area competitors. The competition is now referred to as the French-American Challenge and is contested typically every two years. The regularly schedule matches in 2020 were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The MGA and the League de Paris are excited to have this event back on the calendar for 2022, where they will compete at Quaker Ridge Golf Club. In 2018, the League de Paris won 11.5-8.5.
