Setting the Scene: It's a new era for the Pacific Lutheran women's tennis program. The Lutes embark on their first homestand under new Head Coach Michael Harmon and do so in their new home venue of the Galbraith Tennis Center. PLU welcomes Highline College on Friday before facing College of Idaho on Saturday.
About the Lutes: PLU (4-1) has gotten off to a great start to 2023, winning three matches in Arizona before downing crosstown nemesis Puget Sound on Wednesday by a 6-1 scoreline.
Against UPS, Jillian Chong and Meggie Burnett cranked out an 8-6 win in No. 2 doubles, while at No. 1, the Lutes' tandem of Chloe Andrewjeski and Lilian Nguyen were tripped up 8-6.
Andrewjeski trailed 3-5 in the first set of her match at No. 1 singles but buckled down a prevailed, 7-5, 6-0, over Puget Sound's Paige Shinall. Chong rallied from an opening set defeat to win, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2 while Ella Burriss prevailed, 7-6, 6-3 at No. 4. Burnett blanked UPS's Zoe Richter, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5.
Chloe Andrewjeski has a 4-1 singles record at the No. 1 position while Meggie Burnett is 3-0 in singles play, splitting time between No. 4 and No. 5. In doubles, Jillian Chong has a team-best four wins, bouncing between No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
About the Thunderbirds: Highline (10-5, 5-0 NWAC in 2022) opens their season on Friday against the Lutes. With a roster of six that includes just one sophomore, the Thunderbirds are coming off a season that ended with an NWAC Championship.
About the Coyotes: The Yotes (1-4) head to Tacoma looking to bust out of a four match funk. College of Idaho opened the season with a 5-2 win over Whitworth but has since dropped matches to Lewis-Clark State and Division I opponents Boise State, Idaho State, and UTEP by identical 7-0 scorelines.
Lauren Kreutzer is CoI's No. 1 singles player, collecting a, 603, 4-6, 6-4, victory in the win over Whitworth.
