Salisbury University Football Spring 2021 Preview

a look back at 2019

Salisbury finished the 2019 season with an 11-1 overall record, going 7-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference to win the NJAC Championship and secure the program's 11th NCAA Tournament appearance. Salisbury defeated Maritime and Union on the way to the NCAA Elite Eight.

Salisbury collected 13 All-NJAC selections in 2019, including the NJAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year Jack Lanham and NJAC Coach of the Year Sherman Wood. After the season, Salisbury had three D3football.com All-Region players (Jack Lanham, Tyler Norwood and Sean Carroll). Tyler Norwood earned All-American honors from AP and D3football.com while Sean Carroll was tabbed an honorable mention D3football.com All-American.

Returning All-NJAC Selections

Jack Lanham

Junior | Quarterback

Lanham collected 2019 NJAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year, All-NJAC First Team and D3football.com All-East Region Third Team honors following a stellar sophomore season after taking over as the full-time starter in Week 2. Lanham led the conference in total touchdowns (25) and ranked second in rushing touchdowns (12) and passing efficiency (178.6), third in total offense (2,025 yards), fifth in scoring (74 points) and rushing (703 yards).

Chad Gleason

Senior | Slotback

Gleason was named to the All-NJAC First Team as a return specialist but had a big role in the offense in the 2019 season. Gleason led the NJAC with a 16.1 punt return average and scored a return touchdown. He ran the ball 52 times for 457 yards and four touchdowns. He also caught nine passes out of his slotback position for 250 yards and a pair of scores.

Joseph Osborne

Senior | Offensive Line

An All-NJAC Second Team selection last season, Osborne helped Salisbury become one of most prolific offenses in Division III. Salisbury ranked second in the country in rushing offense (325.0 ypg) and passing yards per completion (20.41 ypc), fifth in passing efficiency (186.76), seventh in scoring offense (47.5 ppg) and 24th in total offense (450.8 ypg).

Salisbury totaled 400-plus yards of total offense in 10 of their 12 games in 2019 and registered triple digits in the rushing yardage in every contest.

Senior | Defensive Back

Carroll earned D3football.com honorable mention All-American honors along with D3football.com All-East Region First Team and All-NJAC First Team laurels in the 2019 season. Carroll led the Salisbury secondary with a team-best five interceptions. Two of his five interceptions were returned for touchdowns, which led the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). Carroll also added 67 tackles, which ranked second on the team and five pass breakups.

Carroll also helped Salisbury become one of the top defenses in the country. The Sea Gulls ranked ninth in the nation in rushing defense, only allowing 74.0 yards per game, and 31st in total defense with opponents only averaging 291.8 yards per contest.

bert schrecongost

Senior | Kicker

Schrecongost was named an All-NJAC Honorable Mention after hitting all five of his field goal attempts in 2019. He was 73-of-78 on extra-point attempts. He totaled 88 points to lead all kickers in the NJAC and rank second amongst all players.

key returners - offense

The offense returns playmakers in the backfield and out wide. The backfield will be paced by Shamar Gray (top left) along with Joey Bildstein. Gray totaled nine touchdowns on 56 carries and 384 yards. Bildstein looks to build on a freshman season where he found the end zone twice in seven games. Lenard Prue (top right), Chris Clark (bottom left) and Hunter Cleaver (bottom right) with battle for spots at receiver. Cleaver and Prue each caught nine passes in 2019. Cleaver notched 228 yards and two touchdowns while Prue tallied three scores on 254 receiving yards.

key returners - defense

Despite losses in the front seven due to graduation, Salisbury remains strong up front leading on the power of Tosin Aroyewun (bottom right), Robert Jadick (top right), Sam Pavlick and Jamere Furbush. The linebackers will be led by Josh Adewumi (top left) who tallied 34 tackles, six tackles for loss, two sacks and two fumble recoveries last season. Casey Counts and Sam Pagella return to vie for starting roles in the defense. Joining Sean Carroll in the secondary will be Aaron Jahnke and Myles Christian (bottom left). In 2019, Christian notched 38 tackles, five pass breakups and four tackles for loss in the secondary.
This is a historic moment to be playing games in the spring. The approach during this time is to not only to develop players, but win games and win our division. We've worked hard in the fall and spring practices. We are fired up to get the season going.
