Mason Student to Officiate at the National Championship Tournament Ian Gagliardi, Mason Rec Student OFfical, now holds the title All Tournament Official and will be heading to the National Championship tournament in January 2022!

Earlier this month Mason Recreation sent two of our Competitive Sports staff members to the NIRSA Mid-Atlantic Regional Flag Football Tournament at the University of Maryland.

Ian Gagliardi, one of Mason Rec’s student Intramural officials, had the good fortune of being chosen from many applicants to officiate at this tournament.

Carissa Smith, Ian’s supervisor and Mason Recreation’s Coordinator of Competitive Sports, also assisted as a member of the Officials Committee for this tournament.

“Over the course of the weekend, Ian demonstrated what it means to be a Patriot. He continually demonstrated strong leadership skills by mentoring newer officials from different universities all while remaining positive,” she said.

“Many players quickly grew to like him and were often joking around with him, even if he wasn’t working their game.”

At the end of the weekend, Ian was ranked 3rd out of 20 student officials from all across the region, which included representatives from North Carolina, Kentucky, Maryland, and Virginia.

With this ranking, Ian was awarded the title and distinction of being an “All Tournament Official.” He also received a bid to officiate at the NIRSA National Flag Football Championships in Round Rock, Texas in January 2022.

At the 2022 National Flag Football Championship Tournament Ian will be representing George Mason University as he officiates with other student officials and teams from across the country.

Congratulations Ian! Way to make the #MasonNation proud.
