Riverside Currents Week 4 Term 4 2022

From the Principal - Ms McNeil

HSC Week 4

The HSC is over! We had some very unlucky students go right through to the end and complete the Food Technology exam this morning and the Design and Technology exam this afternoon. By the publication of this newsletter the final exam will be over and all NSW Year 12 students will be officially free to celebrate. To every Riverside Year 12 student – congratulations! You have made it. Your time is now your own. Rest, recover, rejuvenate and indulge yourselves in doing whatever it is you choose – by negotiation with your parents and carers, if that is your family arrangement. We are all very jealous that you are on holidays!

Year 12 Sign Out Day: Tuesday 8 November 9:00-11:30

Information about Year 12 Sign Out Day has been sent to parents and students. It includes information about outstanding school contributions which will need to be paid to finalise students' official sign out from Riverside. We request that parents visit the payment link embedded in the email to pay all outstanding contributions, some of which have accrued over six years.

If you would like to discuss this further, please do not hesitate to contact the Front Office on 9816 4264.

The next time we will see Year 12 after Sign Out Day is at the Formal on Tuesday 15 November. Tickets for this will be released once Sign Out has been completed. Your support with this is much appreciated.

Year 9 Camp

Year 9 camp is taking place during Week 10 this term - 12-14 December. It will be a wonderful opportunity for students to consolidate friendships, make new friends and be pushed (gently) outside their comfort zones. It is also a fabulous opportunity to develop strategies to develop and strengthen resilience and confidence in a safe and supportive environment. We encourage that all students attend camp, particularly as this is the first opportunity that this cohort has had to go on camp. Please follow up with your daughter to ensure that she has submitted her note and paid the camp fees. Ms Ragen-Harrison, the Year 9 Adviser, will be happy to answer any questions that you may have about camp.

White Ribbon Day Collaboration

As I mentioned last week, our Student Leadership Team were visited by four student leaders from Randwick Boys’ to plan events for White Ribbon Day on Friday 18 November. We are currently finalising details but the initial proposal is that students from Riverside will visit RBHS to speak at their White Ribbon Day assembly and the opportunity will be returned when the Randwick boys visit Riverside in the afternoon to attend our assembly. Building student leadership and socio-emotional skills is a personal passion of mine, as well as a whole school priority. I will continue to promote and foster real-world connection and collaboration, such as the partnership with RBHS, to ensure that we are following through with this very important commitment to our students. We look forward to ongoing collaboration with RBHS.

Primary Links initiatives

Our primary links program kicked off this week with sixteen bright, curious and engaged Year 5 students from partner primary schools – Denistone East, Ryde, Boronia Park and Gladesville. It was a pleasure to meet with the students in the Library to find out what it was that they were most looking forward to at high school and what they were hoping to learn through the enrichment program. The responses I received were: food technology and nutrition, science experiments, sport, visual art and writing. The day was spent getting to know each other and participating in mini lessons. I look forward to welcoming these students back next week in anticipation of them immersing themselves in the history and the culture of the school and the land of the Wallumattagal people. Thankyou to the teachers of the primary links team who have all collaborated to design lessons to enrich the learning of these conscientious young learners.

Mental Health Week and Commerce in the Quad

Next week is a big week at Riverside as we raise awareness for mental health, through the Mallinson House initiative of Wellness Week (check our social media posts) and the Year 9 Commerce initiative, Commerce in the Quad, next Friday 11 November. Both will be huge events and require hours of planning and organisation. Thanks to Ms Philpott, SRC Coordinator, and Ms Edwards, 9 Commerce Coordinator, for leading and coordinating these events. I look forward to making many purchases of student products with my Riverside dollars.

Have a wonderful weekend!

From the Deputy - Ms Nikoletich

The 2022 HSC has concluded today with the final exams, Food Technology and Design and Technology. All students have approached the exams with a positive attitude. After a successful graduation and exam period they now have their Formal to celebrate the completion of 13 years of schooling. This is the closure of another chapter in their continued learning experience.

Numerous Year 12 students have been offered early placement at universities in a variety of courses including Business, IT, engineering and education. Many of these early offers are based on performance and results in Year 11 or the Preliminary course. Students are still required to perform well in their HSC to solidify these offers. On top of school performance, many universities are also seeking students who have engaged in co-curricular activities. This could include performance groups, SRC, Duke of Edinburgh, Mock Trial, debating sporting teams, environmental activities, leadership among others. This is why it is important that students are focused on their studies throughout their schooling. Establishing study routines which balance schoolwork and activities, can only assist with future success.

Congratulations to all our outgoing Year 12 students and remember - once a Riversidian, always a Riversidian.

Classics By The Cove

There has been a hive of activity in our Year 7 and 8 English classes this week as students have been excitedly working on their Classics by the Cove class performances. Auditions have taken place, scriptwriting is underway, and some classes have begun blocking the scenes. Students have been engaging with a range of texts that they have studied throughout the year including A Midsummer Night’s Dream, As You Like It, The Secret Garden and The Midwife’s Apprentice. Here are some behind the scenes photos of students in 7P, 7S and 8P.

Year 10 Drama

Students in Year 10 Drama completed their study of Gothic Theatre with an assessment task which included a group performance, essay and design project. Students worked in groups to self-devise a performance with the title ‘The Lost Child’. Students took inspiration from our studied texts Children of the Black Skirt and Jane Eyre in creating some highly effective and engaging performances which played with non-realistic performance elements such as symbolic use of props, use of music, lack of dialogue and repetition. Students further demonstrated their understanding of the plays and the purpose of design in the theatre through their excellent costume designs and promotional posters.

9DT Tiny House Models

Do we all need to live in a large home and is tiny house living an option or a future necessity? Year 9 Design and Technology students discovered that the motivation behind the tiny house movement can revolve around a desire to live modestly while conserving resources. Housing affordability is not always an option for everyone. Some people are choosing to move towards tiny house living as it meets their needs for sustainable living, self-sufficiency and a simplified lifestyle. The Year 9 Design and Technology students were set the challenge of designing their own tiny house. This included using a CAD 3D drawing program to design and visually communicate the interior of the tiny house, as well as developing their Adobe Illustrator skills to draw the tiny house building components which were then laser cut and used in the construction of their scale model. The completed tiny house models featured sustainable building elements, outdoor entertaining spaces and landscaped surroundings. The students demonstrated extensive CAD drawing skill development and a willingness to develop their own unique and creative design ideas. Year 10 Commerce - The Trade Game

Year 10 Commerce students played The Trade Game to learn about how trade keeps the world economy moving. Students were divided into groups and allocated different countries with different resources based on whether they were developed, developing and underdeveloped. A student banker was appointed who led the trading and ensured the game was conducted in a fair and unbiased manner. The groups quickly got engaged and very competitive to gather the maximum amount of money to win. In the end Ghana, a developing country with the least number of resources, managed to win the game with plenty of economic strategy!

Year 9 - Commerce in the Quad

Year 9 Commerce students are preparing for a MarketDay (Commerce in the Quad) to be held next Friday 11 November (week 5) at lunchtime in the school quadrangle. Commerce in the Quad relates to the Promoting and Selling and Running a Business topics. In creating small businesses, students have developed an understanding of entrepreneurship, planning for success, business operations, selling techniques and maintaining financial records. Each business has created a webpage on our Commerce in the Quad website, which will go live next Monday. There are fifteen stalls selling delectable sweet delights, drinks, the coolest homemade jewellery and candles, self care bags and of course, the perennial favourite, a sausage sizzle! There will also be a teacher sponge throwing stall. You’ll see stalls advertising on Instagram soon. To purchase our goodies, students will need to buy ‘RGHS currency’ (think monopoly money) using a card or cash. ‘RGHS currency’ will be available for purchase Lunch 1 in the quad next week (week 5), as well as on the day. It is suggested that students purchase no more than $5.00 of ‘RGHS currency’ as there will be no cash refunds provided should they not spend it all. Unfortunately we cannot reimburse any pre-bought ‘RGHS currency’ if you are absent on the day. All revenue raised will be donated to a charity chosen by Year 9 Commerce. We are looking forward to a great atmosphere for the whole school to enjoy.

Last week’s newsletter question :

The answer was e) 8:05pm

18:50 in 24 hour time is 6:50 pm or 10 to 7

Adding 1 hour and 15 mins takes you to 7:50 pm + 15 mins = 8:05pm

Science

Investigating Static electricity

The weather conditions were ideal- it was sunny and dry outside, the wind was blowing which meant that the moisture had evaporated, the humidity was low, the weather conditions were finally suitable for students in 8K and 8P Science classes to create some magic moments. They were fascinated with how, just rubbing a balloon over their hair could separate the strands and make the hair look spooky. They experimented with silk and flannel materials to rub Perspex and ebonite rods and watched with great interest how a stream of water from a running tap could be bent towards the rods. What held their fancy most was how their charged Perspex and ebonite rods attracted each other or pushed each other away when placed on a watch glass which rotated.

This was a fun way for them to learn about static electricity, how friction/rubbing objects displaces their electrons which upsets the balance of positive (+) and negative (-) charges in objects which are otherwise neutral. The electrostatic forces of attraction and repulsion caused by displaced electrons generate energy which can cause havoc…..think of the times one gets zapped on windy days and don’t forget the lightning and thunderstorms!!!!!
