I am a hard working multimedia journalist who loves communicating important stories to different communities and with different mediums. Sometimes a story is better told through writing, or through audio, and maybe even through video. My goal is to find the perfect way to tell every story I am chosen to tell.

Yo soy una periodista aplicada y bilingue que le encanta comunicar historias importantes a diversas comunidades y en diferentes formas. A veces una historia se cuenta mejor por forma escrita, o por audio, y hasta con un video. My meta es encontrar la mejor manera de contar cada historia que se me confie en mi para contar.

Why did I chose to major in Journalism?

As of now, I am in my last two semesters at San Diego State University (SDSU), on my way to graduating a year early. I am a different woman today than I was when I walked through the doors, but am still driven by the same goals I had when I started. When it was time to declare my major, there was no hesitation on my end. I once heard that you should chose a career in the industry that you don't mind spending time in improving. Not the career that comes easiest to you but the one that you will foster the most.

I chose journalism because it is the only profession that truly challenges skills I already had. Keep reading to find out what those skills are and how they've helped me in this profession.

¿Porqué decidí obtener una licenciatura en periodismo?

Ahora mismo yo soy completando mis últimos dos semestres en la Universidad Estatal de San Diego (SDSU), a punto de graduarme un año más temprano de lo que se esperaba. La mujer que soy hoy es diferente a la mujer que yo era cuando yo entre por esas puertas metafóricas, pero todavía estoy motivada por las mismas cosas que me motivaban al comenzar. Cuando llegó la hora de inscribirme en la universidad, no hubo un momento de pausa para mí. Yo sabia exactamente lo que quería hacer, llevándome de la idea de que uno debe escoger una carera que lo inspire a mejorar y no necesariamente lo que te venga mas fácil.

Escogí el periodismo porque era la única profesión que realmente retaba las destrezas que ya tenia. Sigue leyendo para saber cuales son esas destrezas y como me ayudan en mi trabajo.

Internship/ Pasantía

Entravision Internship/ Pasantia en Entravision

What is Entravision?

Entravision is an affiliate group of Univision. According to Forbes Univision is a:

"Spanish-language media company, with interests in television, radio and the internet. The Univision Network is the most-watched Spanish-language television network in the U.S., reaching 97% of Hispanic households."

At my internship with Entravision/Univision, I performed several tasks including:

1. I worked as a production assistant under Monserrat Torres 15-20 hours a week.
2. As soon as I'd clock in, I'd receive press releases, missing persons reports, community flyers, etc.
3. I'd extract the most important information and add it directly to the scripts of several markets in the Central Coast, Yuma, El Centro, etc for the midday shows. Oftentimes I'd translate these documents as well.
4. I'd add computer graphics to segments of the midday news shows using the iNEWS system.
5. I gained some experience working the teleprompter, eventually doing the entire one hour evening show for El Centro.

During mi pasantia con Entravision/ Univision yo realize varias tareas incluyendo:

1. Asistiendo a la productora Monserrat Torres 15-20 horas durante la semana.
2. Al llegar a la oficina, se me mandaba un comunicado de prensa, reportes de personas desaparecidas, volantes comunitarios, etc.
3. Yo escogí la información mas relevantes y escribía notas para los noticieros de la tarde para diferentes mercados en la Costa Central, Yuma, El Centro, etc. Muchas veces traducía de Inglés a Español.
4. Le agregaba gráficas electrónicas (CG's) a diferentes notas de los noticieros de la tarde para diferentes mercados, usando el sistema de iNEWS.
5. Gane un poco de experiencia usando el teleprompter.

Over the course of two days, my 25 to 30 second script parts showed up at least 8 times.

STEP 1: I receive a document or video/ PASO #1: Recibo un documento o video

Example/ Ejemplo: Flyer about a community cleaning event in the city of Brawley/ Volante sobre un evento comunitario en la ciudad de Brawley

STEP 2: I write the script part and possibly add a computer graphic. Sometimes I also verify information./ PASO #2: Escribo la parte del guión que acompañe la nota y posiblemente le agrego una gráfica digital (CG's). Aveces verifíco información.

STEP 3: I edit the script part alongside the producer./ PASO #3: Edito lo que haya escrito con la productora.

STEP 4: Watch the El Centro show live and sometimes scroll the teleprompter for the anchorwoman./ Veo el noticiero en vivo para El Centro y aveces desplazo la pantalla que lee la presentadora en vivo con el apuntador/ teleprompter.

The Daily Aztec

The Daily Aztec is SDSU's Independent, student-run newspaper. I joined within my first few weeks at SDSU, and have written for News, Arts & Culture, Opinion, and the Spanish section (Mundo Azteca). I've also filmed, edited and translated content for the Multimedia section. Oftentimes, I wrote multiple times per week.

The Daily Aztec (El Diario Azteca) es un periódico estudiantil de SDSU. Se maneja por estudiantes de la universidad y es independiente de la facultad. Forme parte del equipo después de mis primeras semanas en la universidad. He escrito para la sección de Noticias, Arte y Cultura, Opinión y la sección Hispana (Mundo Azteca). Además he grabado, editado y traducido contenido para la sección de Multimedia.Yo escribía varias veces por semana.

I also managed Mundo Azteca's Instagram for a few weeks. During that time, I increased the followers count by approximately 50, developed a posting schedule and used Canva to create a theme. Before my takeover, they had not updated since 2013.

Ademas me encargue de modernizar el Instagram oficial de Mundo Azteca, ya que no habían subido contenido desde el 2013. En las pocas semanas que lo maneje, incremento desde 50 seguidores a aproximadamente 103.
