Kilbourne Clubs CJ Smith

Worthington Kilbourne is filled with endless possibilities of Clubs and organizations students can be a part of. It is just a matter of knowing what is available. Especially with Covid-19 in consideration, many students were not provided with the opportunity to explore the available clubs at the activities fair that usually happens in the spring. Clubs are also a great way to explore any interests you have without any pressure. There are a variety of clubs and other organizations that you can join, but here are a few examples that may intrigue you.

Club Biomed

Club Biomed is one of the many wonderful club opportunities for Kilbourne students. It is a great environment for students who find themselves interested in medical research. A student and the advisor gives more information about what the club is and why you should join.

One word i would use to describe the club would be 'enlightening'.

Michelle Zhou is an officer for Club Biomed and shares, "Club Biomed is a club that focuses on finding and providing speakers that have experience in the medical field for students interested in that topic. I think it's an incredible way to find out if you're interested in the field, and if you are, it's a great way to learn about firsthand experiences and to get all your questions answered. We usually try to have meetings every two weeks. And you don't even have to go to every meeting, you can just go on the days there is a speaker you find interesting! I joined this club because I was curious to find out if I was interested in joining the medical field and to see what advice I could learn from a professional! You seriously get to learn so much stuff and you get to learn from a variety of experts."

The teacher advisor for Club Biomed is Ms. Davis and she informs, "Club Biomed is for any student interested in careers in health and medicine. We are hoping to include an element of service this year as our club continues to grow. Anyone is welcome, but specifically students who want to learn more about the healthcare field. I chose to advise the club because I love all aspects of biology, including anatomy and physiology and biomedical sciences. I think if I hadn't decided to become a teacher I might have done something with medical research. I enjoy advising a club that helps students figure out what they are passionate about. One word I would use to describe the club is 'enlightening.' My student leaders help find speakers and plan club events. I have enjoyed getting to know these leaders and working closely with them. I has been neat to have some of those leaders return as speakers themselves after they graduate."

If you are interested in Club Biomed, you can find more information on meetings and speakers on their instagram page: wkhsclubbiomed. Also, reach out to the advisor or students if you want more information.

Environmental Club

Environmental Club is a great experience for people interested in extending their knowledge on ways to improve the environment, even just here at Kilbourne. Henry Fronczak provides a deeper explanation for the club:

The club has a very welcoming environment which is why so many people enjoy coming to it.

"Environmental club usually meets once every other week. I would call the meetings a little informal, we all come together as a group and decide a course of action to take to help improve the sustainability of the school. We might implement new recycling cans, make posters to remind students to recycle, plant in the green house, it really depends on what we feel like accomplishing in the given day. I would suggest those who even have a small interest in nature or caring for the Earth to join, even if you just want to spend time with some friends then environmental club is a good club for you to join. I joined the club after talking to members at the club’s art in action table, a few of my friends also joined so that confirmed my interest in joining the club. I would describe the club in one word as relaxed, you do not have to be at every meeting, our agenda is always flexible, it’s not just another commitment for you, it’s a club to have fun helping the planet with friends. My favorite part of the club is the overall environment of it, everyone is always friendly, we usually have a snack to share at each meeting, we might go outside and plant things, or simply talk for the entire meeting. The club has a very welcoming environment which is why so many people enjoy coming to it."

Environmental Club also has an Instagram account for more information and updates on what the club has and is accomplishing: wkhs_esc. If this club sounds interesting to you, don't be afraid to join.

Dungeons and Dragons Club

Dungeons and Dragons is a very well known game that many people are interested in. However, many were not aware that it is a club at Kilbourne. A member of the club and the advisor give more detail on the club.

anybody who is in to seeking imaginative adventures should join.

Kuraim Jackson explains, "We run games that are both appropriate and fun and immersive for people who haven't played and want to learn and people that have played for a very long time. Now that there have been less people we have been playing a lot more home games, like friends of ours and bringing larger groups to other places; we'll go to each other houses and run these really big fantasy games. I enjoy making campaigns and I enjoy people getting to interact in these story books that you can like almost be a part of. I enjoy writing very much, but I am horrible at writing books, so having people experience the stuff that I can make without having to put it all on a page is really nice for me. I suggest that anybody that likes a fantasy setting, and even past that, anyone that likes a sci-fi setting, anybody who wants a modern setting but with some interesting twists should join."

Mr. Chism adds, "Dungeons and Dragons is a collection of students who get together to play out stories that they have created. Any body who is in to seeking imaginative adventures should join. I was asked to advice the club, and I know nothing about Dungeons and Dragons. It is student run, and I did it so the students could have a safe place to engage and have fun."

The club meets once a week in Mr. Chism's room if you are thinking about joining.

Book Club

Calling all readers, this club is for you. If you find yourself not knowing what to read, or you want to discuss books with others, this club is for you. Mrs. Humphrey provides more insight on the information.

Book club is another opportunity to share titles and discuss books with students which I love doing.

Mrs. Humphrey excitedly shares, "Book Club is a group that meets monthly to discuss books! We usually have one group read that is selected each month that we discuss, and then we often share what else we are reading and make recommendations for other books to the group. We meet at 7:15am in the library once a month. Anyone is invited and encouraged to join! We try and read a wide variety of genres and authors so that everyone has a chance to read the type of book they enjoy, but then also get a chance to read something they may not have picked up on their own. As the librarian here at WKHS, one of my favorite parts of my job is helping students find books that they enjoy reading. Book Club is another opportunity to share titles and discuss books with students which I love doing! I also hope to build up students' love of reading and reading for enjoyment outside of school assigned texts. There are so many good books out there, and Book Club offers a time to read a few of them."

Wolves for Cubs

Finally, a wonderful organization available to Kilbourne students is Wolves for Cubs. It is a great environment for people who enjoy interacting with kids and want to work with them. A member of the group gives her insight on the program.

If i were to describe Wolves for cubs in one word, i would probably say fulfilling.

Addie Krohn says, "You’re expected to go into the school you are assigned at least once a week, we don’t have frequent meetings with the other members it’s more just one on one time with the student we’re paired with. I would definitely suggest joining, it’s a great way to positively impact a child’s life and help them develop social skills. I joined because I heard about it on the announcements and thought it sounded fun, I work with kids a lot and it's a good addition for college applications. If I were to describe Wolves for Cubs in one word, I would probably say fulfilling because it’s nice to work with kids and help them each week. my favorite part is going to visit my cub each week and playing games with them."

It is important to note that this is only a small number of the opportunities we have at Kilbourne, and there is a wide variety of interests that you can explore. If you want to learn more about the other options there is a list of WKHS clubs/programs/activities in the Athletic Office. If the clubs listed above do not intrigue you, go check out the list and find out what does. There is always something for everyone.
