Year 3

In 3P we drew our family portraits. We tried a basic form where we used ‘stick figure’ style. We gave our family members special accessories or objects to make it look like them. We had a lot of fun playing with the different characters and making each one unique.

In 3D this week we have been trying to stay active without getting too hot! We have also used our imagination to write stories about the snow and upcoming festivities.

Principal's Message

Captains Election Speeches

Congratulations to each of the students who gave their Captains Election Speech, they all did a fabulous job and have much to be proud of.

Successful School Captains and Vice Captains will be announced at Presentation Day on Wednesday 7 December. We look forward to working with them in their new leadership roles in 2023. Well done and keep up the good work.

Book Fair

The Book Fair had a range of quality books on offer which inspired our students to want to read more. There were books to inspire and excite the imagination, as well as those that inform us, deepening our knowledge of the world. In the words of Dr Suess, who is one of the most quoted authors in the world -

Thank you to Mrs O’Connor for organising the Book Fair.

Parents Waiting Outside Classrooms

It is good to have our parents back on site. In the afternoons, at home time, we kindly ask that you refrain from going to the classrooms located upstairs as the current noise level is distracting the students from their learning. Please wait downstairs. If all parents could please wait quietly so as not to distract the students from their lessons, that would be very much appreciated. If you are chatting to others or on the phone, please make sure you do this a fair distance from the classroom where you can’t be heard.

Volunteers Afternoon Tea

We would like to thank all of our fantastic volunteers. Unfortunately, the Volunteers Afternoon Tea has been postponed and a new date will be advised.

Thank you to Moyra - Uniform Shop Co-ordinator

We would like to thank Moyra Smith for her outstanding work in managing our uniform shop for the past 5 years. Moyra has done an excellent job and we will miss being greeted by her happy, smiling face every Monday morning. The uniform shop is also looking for volunteers to assist next year with the back to school rush and also throughout the year from time to time. If you are interested, please contact the front office and Moyra will make contact with you.

Special Religious Educators (SRE) and Ethics Teachers

Thank you to all of our Special Religious Educators and Ethics Teachers for providing our students with information in these areas this year. Our last SRE and Ethics lessons will be this Thursday 24 November.

WHS

Our health and safety protocols are in place to ensure the safety of students whilst they are on the school site. During the day students follow our positive behaviour for learning expectations which also include acceptable playground behaviour. Students are not allowed to ride bikes or skateboards on site or to climb up trees or fixtures, this also applies to all students who remain on site after the 3:15pm bell goes. Thank you to those parents who ensure these protocols are adhered to, you are working with us to ensure the safety of our students.

Grown Out of School Uniforms

If families have any Byron Bay Public School uniforms that your child/ren have grown out of or no longer need, we would appreciate if you could send them to school to build our collection of second-hand uniforms.

High School SEAT Program (Students engaged as teachers)

Students in Kindergarten and Year 2 enjoyed a morning of physical activities with Year 9 students from Byron Bay High School. Around sixty high schoolers arrived with their teachers, Kelly Caoyonan and Lara Cranfield ready to coach our Year 2s. These high school students are studying Physical Activities and Sports Studies as a subject, using a Byron Bay High School strategy known as SEAT (students engaged as teachers), which encourages deeper learning through the transfer of skills. Our students were fully engaged and rotated around 15 stations. We would like to thank them again for their time and energy. The ice blocks after were a welcome treat in the warm weather.

Awards

Congratulations to our Class Achievement Award Recipients for Term 4 Week 5.

2022 saw our 7th year competing in the Premier’s Debating Challenge. Audrey O, Lenni S, Halo B, Blake H, Sophie S, Ruby C, Japhi K and Lily M competed in two teams against a local pool of schools including Bangalow, Brunswick Heads and Eureka. The Byron Bay Blue team (Halo, Lenni, Audrey and Blake) won 3 of their 4 debates. They came 2nd in our zone, losing to the regional finalists, Bangalow Gold. Each person needed to speak for 4 minutes on a topic they had only just been given an hour beforehand. Last week Alstonville PS were crowned State Champions against Randwick PS. Congratulations to these debaters who spent many lunchtimes learning the skills of debating. I am so proud of their efforts.

The Prime Minister's Spelling Bee started in August with over 61,000 students entering nationwide. Byron Bay Public School had 39 students enter in this online event. Pia L from 4V is our school champion, progressing to the next stage of the finals. Pia was presented with the school champion certificate at this week’s whole school assembly. Participant certificates will be handed out at the Stage assemblies this week.

Crossing Supervisor Position

‘Transport for NSW’ informed us that our school will be without a crossing supervisor until another one can be employed. If you are interested in the job or know of someone that might be, please see this link for additional information and the job add.

Please talk to your children about the importance of safe pedestrian behaviour, particularly on this crossing which is a busy one. Here are some reminders:

  • Wherever possible, cross the road at a designated pedestrian crossing facility;
  • Stop! Look! Listen! Think! when crossing the road;
  • Take care whenever you cross; and
  • Don’t run across the road.

If you use the Tennyson St crossing, please consider accompanying your children across the road until a suitable replacement crossing supervisor is employed by ‘Transport for NSW’.
