Fork Union Signs Guaranteed Admission Memorandum of Understanding with VMI

Fork Union Military Academy continues to strengthen the futures of its cadets by creating articulation agreements with colleges and universities around the nation. This past week, the Academy added to that list when Colonel David Coggins signed a Guaranteed Admission Memorandum of Understanding with the Virginia Military Institute. Coggins invited Commandant of Cadets Colonel Adrian Bogart III along with several admission representatives to campus to celebrate the agreement. Joining Colonel Bogart's team was VMI senior Xavier Frederick, who graduated from Fork Union in 2019.

The agreement states that any Fork Union cadet, who meets VMI’s undergraduate admission requirements, will be guaranteed admission.

"Agreements, such as these, help alleviate some stress that our seniors feel during the application time," said Dr. James Benson, Assistant Director of College Placement and Academic Services. "Our cadets work so hard each academic year, and it certainly helps them to know their hard work solidifies a "win under their belt", so to speak."

VMI joins an impressive list of agreements Fork Union has including Norwich University and The Citadel.

"We currently have two out-of-state agreements that provide amazing pathways for our cadets in two very different locations," said Kelsey Hill, Director of College Placement and Academic Services. "It is an added bonus to be able to offer a Virginia school for our cadets, which for many of our cadets is an in-state option."

Last Friday, Colonel Bogart, his associates and Frederick spoke to the Corps of Cadets during a special Chapel presentation on the admission process at the Virginia Military Institute and later enjoyed a special lunch with select cadets.

Charlie Company Wins 18th Annual Coat Drive Competition

Cadets Sanders & Sanchez helped MAJ Leydig & the Fellowship of Christian Athletes delivered over 100 coats to the drop-off location for Fork Union Military Academy's 18th Annual Coat Drive this past week.

Congratulations to Charlie Company for winning the coat drive competition by collecting the most coats and blankets for those in need.

This Week's College Acceptances

It's that time of year again when our seniors get the exciting news of college acceptances!

Our goal each year is that 100% of our seniors gain college acceptance, and the Class of 2023 is already on track to achieve that goal. Our seniors are working hard with the College Placement and Academic Services team under the leadership of the department's Director, Kelsey Hill, and the Assistant Director, Dr. James Benson.

Check out this week's acceptances!

Congratulations, gentlemen!

One Family's Story - The Campbell Family

It is always gratifying to hear families tell stories of how their Fork Union Military Academy experience had a positive impact on their son and family. It was wonderful to receive this testimonial from one family recently, which we share in its entirety below:

As a parent, one of the hardest things to endure is watching your child struggle and not know how to fix it. Charles Derek Marcellus Campbell, II aka “Chaz” was born in August of 2005 in Camp Springs, MD at Andrews Air Force Base, during Hurricane Katrina to be exact. Chaz began school at the age of 4 at Woodstream Christian Academy in Mitchellviille, MD, and absolutely hated it. If you ask him, he will probably tell you it was quite infamous. Every year thereafter was a battle. Hated waking up, hated getting dressed, hated going to school period. It wasn’t until the end of his freshman year where deeper discussions on what we could do to get him engaged in his educational future did FUMA pop up. Our boy was failing practically every class he was in, and we couldn’t help but feel how we had failed him too. Chaz had shuffled from one public school to another, just lost in the sea of overcrowded classrooms. We became aware of FUMA through a friend and colleague who attended the Air Force Academy, Dirk Armbrust. Mr. Armbrust attended FUMA back in the mid-80’s and would always talk about how his experiences there positively impacted his life. As we looked for an opportunity for Chaz, we talked with Dirk about FUMA, and he was adamant that we should give FUMA serious consideration.

The Campbell Family is a party of five, where Chaz has two older extremely protective sisters. So, when the family discussions encompassed sending their little brother two hours away to a military academy, as a boarding student at that, it created quite an uproar. As a mother, how could I send my son to live outside of the home? He had never been away from family. Ever! And this is what we’re doing? Absolutely not. What if he gets lonely? What if he needs us? And most importantly, what if he isn’t happy?! All these questions were thrown around, amongst the many arguments of how and why Chaz was not attending this school. Fortunately, the tone of the arguments began to change once we attended an Open House. We immediately began to get the feeling that FUMA would be a great fit for him, particularly because of the academic, athletic, and military mix.

A huge factor for us in choosing FUMA was of course the academic regimen that the school has in place: The One Subject Program. The One Subject Program has worked wonders for Chaz. When he was in public school in Northern Virginia, he was not motivated to thrive in the academic system. In fact, he considered himself a below average student and was not motivated to excel beyond that. When Chaz learned of the One Subject program at FUMA, it became (for him) the main reason that he would consider attending. Once school started, Chaz very early on started to appreciate that he was able to go both wide and deep on the subject matter that he was studying. He felt that he was given a chance to be immersed in his work, ask questions, and learn about a particular subject he had no interest in prior to FUMA. Consequently, he is excelling in the One Subject Program format and was on the President’s List for the 2020-2021 School Year (10th Grade) with a 4.0 GPA. He is on track to repeat his academic success from 10th grade and currently has a 4.0 GPA for the 2021-2022 School Year. Not bad for a kid who started out with a less than 2.0 GPA.

Another major attraction for us was the chance for Chaz to unlock his leadership potential. The fact that he could be directly challenged in this arena, while under the tutelage of seasoned leadership professionals was extremely appealing. Fast-forward to the 2021-2022 School Year, Chaz has completely thrived with this opportunity. Leading amongst one’s peers presents some interesting challenges, but we have found that the Leadership Training that Chaz gets from his senior leaders and Tac Officer have assisted him in overcoming any leadership obstacles he has faced. Chaz has a desire to attend the United States Naval Academy (USNA) after high school, and we believe the leadership skills he is gaining at FUMA will make him an excellent candidate to become a USNA Midshipman.

Athletically, we were drawn to the opportunities that Chaz would be presented with. Chaz played Rugby from 3rd through 9th Grade, and while FUMA does not have a rugby team he was on the Rifle Shooting Team and has had an introduction to the Wrestling team. He has also been afforded an opportunity to be certified as a Lifeguard. These sporting experiences have done wonders for Chaz as he becomes a well-rounded and multi-disciplined student.

Chaz is a product of Marine parents; we are pleased with the military structure of FUMA. This structure was another key driver. Chaz has always had a particular desire to become a Military Officer when he gets older, and we are elated that FUMA has a vaunted history of embracing and teaching the core values of what a young man could possibly experience as a military professional. Although the military aspect of FUMA is just one component of the school, Chaz has fully embraced this aspect of the Academy and is thriving in all areas of his high school life because of this construct. He has a camaraderie with his student peers fostering the groundwork for life-long friendships. Because of FUMA, Chaz is able to establish interactions with students from different age groups, different areas of the United States, and from different locations around the world. He is flourishing in the diversity of the FUMA environment.

The list of reasons why we have chosen FUMA for Chaz can go on and on. So much so that he has two cousins that are attending as well- Cadet Sebastian Quinteros (12th Grade) and Cadet Calieb Collazo (10th grade) who are also succeeding. FUMA has truly become a “Family Affair” for us.

Fork Union Military Academy is not a place where you want to be but a place you want to be from. As a parent, we strive to afford and provide every opportunity we can for our children to succeed in life. We do our very best to guide and advise them, and we need the partners in place to make that happen. And that is what FUMA is: a PARTNER in our son’s future. FUMA offers the environment for our son to learn, develop and enhance his natural born skillsets on a firm Christian foundation.

Our lives changed the day we dropped off our little boy as a boarding student. He matured immensely overnight and today he is a Cadet 2LT, Platoon Commander for 3rd Platoon, Bravo Company, and a member of the Retan Rifles. We are truly blessed to be a part of the FUMA family and can’t imagine Chaz being anywhere else.

Thank you for allowing us to share our story and our journey.

Fork Union Places First at the Gordonsville Veterans Parade

This past weekend, the Fork Union Military Academy Band attended a Veterans Day parade in Gordonsville, Virginia. These young men have been practicing tirelessly for the past eight weeks to prepare for this event. About half of the cadets in the band first picked up their instrument at the beginning of this school year, just two short months ago. More than half had never experienced a performance style like this before, yet they impressed everyone who saw them with their professionalism and musicianship.

Four high school bands were entered to be judged in this parade, and the judges and hundreds of spectators were completely wow’ed by our cadets and their abilities. This led to their selection for first place in the band category. This is the first time in over 10 years that the Fork Union Military Academy Band has won a trophy at the Gordonsville parade.

"As their band director, they have come in on many days and said, 'sir, can’t we take it easy one of these days?' And I’ve had to tell them to wait for the results," said ETN1(SS) John Warren. "Well, they felt those results last weekend. You could see the genuine joy on many of their faces when they announced that for the first time in over 10 years, they were the winners. They came back to campus with a sense of pride that many haven’t felt before. The hours of practice, of me yelling corrections over the beat of the drums, of the drum major and section leaders working tirelessly to mentor the newer musicians. They all realized it was worth it and the resounding question I get is 'when can we do that again?' Fortunately, the answer to that question is on December 2nd and December 3rd, when we will be doing two more parades where they will be judged. The band will now be spending their time practicing Christmas music and preparing for even bigger and better competitions. What these young men have accomplished in eight weeks has made me so proud and I know that with their drive, work ethic, and desire to stand on top, they will continue to impress me and every other person who looks at the band."

Bravo Zulu Award Winners

Every Friday the Fork Union Military Faculty and Staff meet to nominate a few who have exceeded the standards and demonstrated superlative performance. Whilst we have various awards and recognitions - a simple "Well Done!" we hope, is also appreciated. The combination of the Bravo and Zulu nautical signal flags, i.e., Bravo Zulu, also referred to as "BZ," is a naval signal, typically conveyed by flag hoist or voice radio, meaning "Well Done" with regard to actions, operations or performance.

The following are the Bravo Zulu awards for this week:

Cadet Private Isaiah Stewart is a junior and first-year cadet in Alpha Company. He is a boarding student from Columbus, OH. Cadet Stewart made multiple three-point shots in junior prep basketball’s victory over North Cross. The disciplined work ethic that led to this great performance was an inspiration to fellow cadets and helped lead FUMA to their first win of the year. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Stewart!

Cadet Private Isac Toure is a junior and first-year cadet in Bravo Company. He is a boarding student from Midlothian, VA. Cadet Toure is a leader on the junior prep basketball team. He took control of the team from start to finish in their game against North Cross. He set the tone during warmups, started the game by calling out plays, and had a great individual performance. Cadet Toure’s leadership was impressive and inspired his fellow cadets and teammates to victory. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Toure!

Cadet Sergeant Jimmy Sa Said is a freshman and second-year cadet in Charlie Company. He is a boarding student from Mexico City, Mexico. Cadet Sa Said is an outstanding soccer player but decided to try wrestling this winter. In FUMA’s latest meet held at Hargrave Academy, Cadet Sa Said wrestled in two matches and won both. This helped our FUMA Team take First Place overall. His discipline and determination are an inspiration to his fellow cadets and teammates. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Sa Said!

Cadet Corporal Philippe Lianavwa is a tenth grader and first-year cadet in HSC. He is a boarding student from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Cadet Lianavwa has earned the role of 2nd Platoon guidon bearer. He has risen in the ranks very quickly and seeks further personal and professional growth by volunteering to work with the younger cadets. Cadet Lianavwa’s willingness to assist others, reliability, patience, and personal accountability is a testament to his character. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Lianwavwa!

Mrs. Kelsey Hill and Dr. James Benson, College Placement & Academic Services, are recognized for their hard work and superb results in achieving 100% college acceptance of our cadets in early December. Many young men received options for scholarships and military service through service academies, ROTC programs, enlistments, and specialized technical schools. Mrs. Hill and Dr. Benson’s focus, patience, and sage counsel for our cadets towards career and college admissions is top-notch. Bravo Zulu, Mrs. Hill and Dr. Benson!

CSM Catherine Garcia, Art Instructor and Director of the Academy’s Art program, has done a wonderful job transforming the former Art seminar into a more comprehensive One-Subject Plan course by incorporating art history, hands-on work, and productive field trips into the curriculum. To accompany and diversify the art history component of the curriculum, CSM Garcia has incorporated several field trips to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) and one to the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Bravo Zulu, CSM Garcia!

Mr. Jose Rodriguez, Admissions Coordinator, recently supported his team by creating flyers and materials promoting both admissions and fundraising efforts, including our 125 for the 125th campaign. His creative talents are appreciated. Bravo Zulu, Mr. Rodriguez!

LTC Alex Grant, Special Projects, has been volunteering to cover the Social Center in addition to working on special projects around campus so our cadets can enjoy their free time. Bravo Zulu, LTC Grant!

Mr. Tommy Martin, Landscaper, has joined our team and immediately assisted with grounds work. He has done a great job and his hard work, initiative, and safety is appreciated. Bravo Zulu, Mr. Martin!
