Dear University community,

Welcome back as we ready to begin a new semester in this New Year. I trust all had a chance to both recharge and relax over the holiday season.

  • Students, applications are now being accepted for TAMIU CARES/ARP Grant assistance, offering over $7.5 million in student assistance for eligible students this semester. Make your move here.
  • More good news: TAMIU Books IncludED will continue this semester, providing your course materials to you FREE OF CHARGE. Last semester, 8,457 students participated, saving over $3.7 million. Get the details.
  • We are continuing our on-campus testing and vaccination as part of our ongoing commitment to health and safety. All updated hours are here. For information about our ongoing response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, please continue to visit our dedicated COVID-19 Response Center.

Campus Grounds and Facilities Changes Coming

As part of its continued commitment to providing a beautiful space for learning and living the campus life, TAMIU is expanding outdoor seating and study areas. In particular, there will be new seating options for the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library arcade and the North-South paseo through the campus.

TAMIU CARES Back for Spring

This Spring 2022, eligible students will be able to benefit from over $7.5 million in student support funding through TAMIU CARES. Applications opened Monday, Jan. 10. Eligible undergraduate and graduate students can access an online application and additional program information by visiting www.tamiu.edu/cares.

Books IncludED Reduces Student Costs Again

Enrolled, degree-seeking TAMIU students this Spring, will enjoy access to all required materials in Blackboard on Day One at no cost through TAMIU's Books IncludED initiative. Learn more at go.tamiu.edu/booksincluded.

Office of Information Technology Offers New User-Friendly Help Desk

Come Spring semester, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) will introduce a new Help Desk in Dr. Billy F. Cowart Hall. The new OIT Help Desk will feature a spacious waiting area for students, faculty, and staff and addresses the expanded need for services and support. 

TAMIU Killam Library Readies for New Year

This Spring 2022, in line with the focus of open educational resources at TAMIU, the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library will launch an OER publishing platform called Pressbooks. The Killam Library’s is also planning to implement an AI chatbot within the landing page of the Killam Library’s website and a new library system named, Alma and Primo that features a newly redesigned interface to improve user experience.

College & School News
Dr. Claudia San Miguel, COAS Dean

The College of Arts and Sciences boasts various initiatives including the continuation of its AIRES program, which assists upper-level STEM students; the arrival of Dr. Anas Blasi, visiting research scholar for the School of Engineering; upcoming performances by two ballet companies; the return of the 6th International Mariachi Festival with Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán; and a long-term project focused on an interactive, 3D mosaic mural in downtown Laredo.

Dr. James O'Meara, COED Dean

The College of Education joins the Advancement Via Individual Determination Higher Education Program, which helps train 85,000 educators annually to better prepare all students for college, careers, and life.

Dr. Marivic Torregosa, CNHS Dean

The College of Nursing and Health Sciences expands Health Sciences offerings in Communication Disorders, Kinesiology, Pre-Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy program, and the BS in Public Health.

Dr. Barbara Hong, UC Dean

University College continues the rollout of its new First-Year Curriculum with an exciting new Signature Course format. Also, the Reading the Globe initiative returns with a tentatively planned trip to Singapore this Maymester 2022.

Dr. Jennifer Coronado, Graduate School Dean

Graduate School saw enrollment growth of 8.7% this Fall and Dean Dr. Jennifer Coronado says there’s a reason: new and enhanced programs that respond to market needs and student preferences. Online program information is available at https://www.tamiu.edu/gradschool/.

LATE REGISTRATION FOR SPRING 2022 CONTINUES

Undergraduates may register for up to 18 hours for the Spring semester. Graduate students can register for up to 12 hours in the Spring semester.

TAMIU ATHLETICS UPDATES

TAMIU is a member of the Lone Star Conference and competes in 11 sports: volleyball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, softball, baseball, men's and women's soccer, and men's and women's golf.
