The serfs were the lowest class, they had no power. Their only job was to stay on their land and make food. There was no way of getting out of being a serf. The serfs gave their food to the knights and lords. Then, the lords provided the king with food and knights. In the end, everyone in the manor is working for the king.

Ultimately, it is the Pope's and the king's family's decision on who the king will be. Another reason is that they had classes. All of the classes below the king had to work for him.
