Human Body Systems students at MHS are happy to announce they have completed their forensic unit after learning to use anthropological techniques to identify bones through various measurments, and molecular biology techniques to identify DNA samples via Gel electrophoresis. They were also thrilled to have Detective Brent Benzing visit the classrooms to help them understand the why’s of these tasks!

Just a few of the topics the Investigator had students thinking about included how tv and real life cases differ, using loic to make sense of the sometimes illogical, what evidence can tell us, and our innate ability to communicate. After the presentation, there was only one complaint… We wish we had more time to learn from the Detective!

Here are a few of the takeaways from our guest speaker’s presentation, as stated by the students:

“I enjoyed when we got to look at scenes and it was our job to give our ideas of what may have happened and piece clues together. It was nice instead of just hearing about the investigation, we got to figure it out ourselves.”

“Whenever a human being walks into a room, they leave a part of themselves in there. It's just a matter of forensics being able to find it. There's a lot more than than appears with the naked eye.”

“Detective Benzing & the presentation shared ways of testing DNA or evidence and we have learned about how to "test" a skull for identity and other features helpful in finding who it belongs to.”

“I was so interested in that stuff I could listen all day, but s it would have been nice to have more time learning with the Detective.”

We’re grateful for the level of hard work, expertise, and commitment that law enforcement professionals like Detective Benzing bring to Midland County! We’re also grateful that Mr. Benzing expanded his investigative job duties to include teaching at Midland High!

What is the Early Middle College Program? The EMC program is a five-year program of study. We work closely with two post-secondary partners, Davenport University and Delta College, to provide students with an opportunity to earn a high school diploma and one or more of the following: 60 transferable credits, an associate degree, or a professional certificate. Almost all expenses are paid for by MPS. For more information, click the button below.

Midland Public Schools would like to celebrate our 10-year PYP journey with a Learner Profile Day for all our elementary and pre-k students! On December 7, Students and staff are encouraged to use their creativity to dress like one of the attributes of the Learner Profile. This is not meant to be a burden of shopping and planning, but rather an opportunity to get creative with items found at home! Please reference the flyer for inspiration and ideas for each Learner Profile trait. We can’t wait to see the Learner Profile in action and celebrate how far we have come in our PYP journey as a district.
