Nursery class Spring 2 2023

The subject driver this half term was art. The children have been enthralled with making marks using a range of tools.

We began the term learning how to make marks by printing, what better way than to create prints of our own hands!

We learnt what an artist is and used the artists Lene Bladbjerg and Mondrian to influence our work and learn new techniques.

On the 21st February we entered nursery to find flour scattered on the floor. After reading the story 'The runaway pancake' the children decided that it was the pancake who had created this trail when he had rolled away!

Have you seen him?

We couldn't let pancake day go by without learning the song 'Mix a pancake' and trying pancakes in class.

Most of us thought that they were delicious.

We used our key story 'Hooray for fish' to influence our Literacy work.

The children used their imagination and created their own creatures for Little Fish to meet in the ocean.

We created our own 'Guess who' book about our favourite sea creatures / animals.

Can you work out who is who?

We have learnt many songs and rhymes this half term based around our topic theme. Which rhyme is your favourite?

After listening to the story 'Hooray for fish' multiple times, the children then felt confident enough to retell it independently using this text map.

This half term deconstructed role play was introduced into provision. This area encourages children to use their imagination and create props using open ended resources. Children can develop their own role play scenarios based around personal experiences or interests. We would like to say a huge thank you to parents for donating large cardboard boxes, they have been thoroughly enjoyed by Nursery children. This area will continue to be developed further over the coming term.

Thursday 2nd March 2023 marked World Book Day. We celebrated by dressing up as our favourite characters.

I am sure you will agree that we all look fantastic!

We were lucky enough to experience a heavy snowfall this half term. Thank you for sharing all your photographs, it certainly looks like you all made the most of the day!

Lorna Lamb and Honey Bunny have had such fun visiting more of our children's homes. Thank you very much for taking such good care of Lorna and Honey, reading them stories and teaching them how to keep their teeth clean.

Honey and Lorna look forward to more adventures in the term ahead.

We ended the half term with an Easter Egg competition. Well done to all children who entered, your eggs are just fantastic. It has been really nice to see the photos and videos of you making your entries and all the skills that you used to create them.

Our topic next half term is 'Growth and change'.

Soon we will have an extremely important job to do. We need to look after these eggs carefully and keep them safe.

How will we keep them safe?
I wonder what will happen?

We will also have some tiny insect visitors in class. Children will have the opportunity to observe caterpillars move, grow and change over the coming weeks.

What do you think will happen?

Here are some books that we will be sharing together.

Our key text next half term will be 'The Odd Egg' by Emily Gravett. We will be retelling this story using words and actions.

In Maths next half term we will be:
  • Learning to recognise numerals beyond 5.
  • Subitise amounts up to 5 accurately.

In Literacy next half term we will be:

  • Understand ‘why’ questions, like: “Why do you think the caterpillar got so fat?”
  • Sing a large repertoire of songs. Know many rhymes, be able to talk about familiar books, and be able to tell a long story.
  • Understand that print can have different purposes.
  • Understand that we read English text from left to right and from top to bottom.
  • N2 children will continue to practise writing their first name focusing on correct letter formation.
  • N2 children will begin to use their phonic knowledge in their mark making.

Phonics

In phonics the N2 children will continue to learn phonemes alongside the corresponding grapheme. They will also engage in activities that will continue to build on their listening skills, with a particular focus on initial sounds, alliteration, and oral blending and segmenting.

Some N2 children will also begin to access the Nursery purple phonics books in class where they will practise blending to read CVC words.

N1 children will continue to focus on developing their listening skills and identifying different sounds. They will also continue to learn and sing traditional nursery rhymes.

Happy Easter everybody. Have a wonderful break and we will see you on Monday 17th April.
