2. The Code of Ethics should drive your decisions

Chapman University is committed to the highest ethical standards, principles and policies which all Chapman community members are expected to uphold by incorporating these values into their daily University activities whether they occur on or off campus.

Chapman University has a Code of Ethics which identify Chapman's ethical ideals that all faculty and staff should strive for.

Chapman's Ethical Ideals

  • Pursuit of Excellence
  • Acting with Integrity
  • Respect for Persons
  • Valuing Diversity
  • Freedom of Expression
  • Respect for the Environment
  • Life of Service
  • Honesty
  • Confidentiality
  • Respect for University Resources
  • Avoiding Conflicts of Interest and Commitment
  • Comply with Legal and Professional obligations
  • Reporting Violations of the Code

3. A failure of ethics and compliance partially led to the "Varsity Blues" scandal.

A component of the varsity blues scandal pertained to college staff taking bribes. In turn, the staff would submit the names of specific students as "recruits" to the admissions office.

Chapman has created an Admissions Guidelines (FAQ) for Governing Boards.

4. You can access Chapman's policies by topic or alphabetical order on Legal Affairs's site

If you have a question about a specific topic, policies are a great first step. The policies provide what is expected of Chapman employees in a specific situation.

5. Mandated Reporters are not the only ones who should report specific instances of abuse

California law designates certain positions at Chapman University to be “mandated reporters” who have an individual duty to report known or suspected neglect or abuse of children, elderly or dependent adults.

All Chapman University employees or volunteers, regardless of "mandated reporter" status, are required to report any known or suspected abuse or neglect relating to children/minors.

6. Required Disclosures

The Higher Education Act (HEA) requires certain postsecondary educational institutions to disclose information about the institution, public safety statistics, graduation rates, etc. Chapman provides this information under it's Consumer Disclosure section.

The Department of Federal Student Aid (FSA) provides more information about institutional reporting and disclosure requirements.

7. Register your devices with Public Safety

Public Safety provides a service that allows you to register serial numbers of your electronic devices in the event of theft.

This is provided as a service by Chapman University Public Safety, and by using this service you understand that lost or stolen items are rarely found and retrieved by Public Safety and/or local police authorities, and by providing serial numbers and other identifying information you understand that there is no guarantee that your items will ever be retrieved by the authorities. Users of this service further understand and agree that if you chose to make a report to local authorities, that is your responsibility.

8. Vehicle Jumpstarts

Instead of calling a tow company or the Automobile Club, Public Safety offers the service of jumpstarting your vehicle in the event your battery is drained. Contact the main Public Safety Line for assistance.
