More about Elijah

  • He was one of the greatest prophets of the Old Testament
  • He taunted the king's pagan prophets to ask their false gods to send fire down to earth to consume a sacrifice
  • Their gods were powerless, but YHWH was not, and he sent down fire
  • The people proclaimed, "The Lord is God?"
  • Soon afterwards, Elijah was deemed a true prophet
  • The Jews believed Elijah would bring peace to the world -- he was the partner and predecessor of the Messiah
