We became art critics for some of Warhol’s masterpieces. We described his work and discussed what we liked and disliked.
We looked at tone and shading techniques
We drew the missing box to complete the Warhol inspired art.
We thought about some popular objects of today and drew some of them and explored different media.
We chose one popular object for our final piece.
Literacy
Hermelin
At the start of term we looked at the features of a letter and wrote a letter based on the book Hermelin.
We then gathered lots of new vocabulary to help us write our letter and the focused on some keys skills. We looked at using apostrophes for possession - which was tricky, making sure that we are maintaining the correct tense in our writing before finally learning how to use suffixes correctly in our writing. The final outcomes were amazing!
Explanation text
The children then moved onto writing an explanation text. To hook the children into their learning they planted some runners beans and eagerly tracked the progress of them growing. The children then explored the technical vocabulary needed to write the piece, subordinating conjunctions and using a variety if time words. Once again we were blown away by the standard of writing from the children.
Science
In science we finished off our plants topic that we started last term term. We looked at the lifecycle of a non-flowering plant, looking specifically at Conifer trees. We found out how cones produce and how they only release in the correct seeds conditions. Cones will keep their scales closed if it it damp and wet and open them up, releasing the seeds, when it is dry. We also planted some more runner beans (our first batch didn’t germinate 🤭) under different conditions so that we can measure and compare how they grow. One plant had no soil, one no water, one no air, one no warmth (it’s in the fridge) and one had no light. I wonder if your lreducyions were correct?
Religious Education
In RE this half term we looked at how faith contributes to community cohesion. We started by looking at Christianity and used Google Earth to find churches in Mapplewell and the surrounding areas. We then discussed if having religious buildings in the community helped spread Christian values.
After that we looked at Judaism and the rules that Jews follow during Shabbat their day of rest. The children had to sort activities into those that they would and wouldn’t be able to do during Shabbat. They then debated if they would be able to give up TV and their computer games every week to follow the Shabbat rules.
Following on from this we looked at Islam and the rules that Muslims follow both at home and in their community. We then discussed if having these shared values helped people to live harmoniously within their community.
We continue to look at how faith contributes to community cohesion with the religions Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism at the start of next half term.
Physical Education
Ball Striking Games
As part of the children learning in PE they have been taking part in ball striking games. They have had to focus on striking the ball accurately, field positioning, team work and developing tactics.
We were also lucky enough to attend the Barnsley Multi skills competition. Through the children that attended this competition it meant that every child in Class 5 had represented Mapplewell at an out of school tournament this academic year!
What will be learning about next half term?
