Personal Statement

My name is Rebecca Chavez. I have an AA in Business Administration from College of Marin. I have just finished my Bachelors degree at San Diego State University. I majored in International Business with a focus in Western Europe and Spanish. Spring semtester of 2022 I studied abroad as part of my major program, in Bilbao, Spain. It helped strengthen my spanish skills and gave me insight into how bsuiness is done in Spain as well as the culture.

After graduation I plan on finding a job that includes both travel and marketing. Whether that is in the tourism industry or marketing industry, here or abroad. I have gained experience in the marketing field as an intern at a travel association which introduced me to marketing on a global scale. I hope wherever I end up it is a job that challenges me, is exhilerating, and involves my love of travel.

Internship

with San Francsico Travel Association

One experience that really changed and shaped me was when I was a marketing intern for San Francisco Travel Association for 6 months. Before I had started this internship, I was completely green, I had no prior experience in the corporate world let alone in marketing. I didn’t even know if I wanted to work in marketing.

I needed to learn how to communicate with the customers of San Francisco Travel Association effectively and correctly. That directly goes hand n’ hand with what skills I had obtained during my internship.

A big part of my internship was writing articles for the website; because I was in college and I had never taken a marketing class I was so used to only writing in one style, but during my time there I learned that writing for marketing has a whole other tone and style than writing styles I had previously learned.

From this experience you can only learn so much in a class room. At San Francisco Travel I learned on the job, I was aware of my abilities and was eager to learn.

At the end of the 6 months working as a marketing intern, I felt like I knew so much more about the tourism industry and now I’m able to take what I learned with me to my next jobs. When I started, I knew nothing but my supervisors were willing to help me and teach me; and by the end of it, I could confidently say I actually made a difference with what I did.

[Disclaimer: this photo is of me presenting a work project to a number of company employees from different departments.]

My internship included creating google ads for the company and looking over our google analytics. Below is a presentation I gave via zoom to a group of people in the company. Lockdown had just begun so we were not in the office like we were previously when I gave presentations.

School Projects

In my business writing class we were given an assignment to create a Standard Operating Procedure. We had to choose the focus of the Standard Operating Procedure and I chose how to close the café I worked at at the end of the day.

This was a fun and challenging assingment because I had never written a Standard Operating Procedure before.

Empresa presentation is a presentation I did in a group in my business Spanish class. As a group we had to create a company, go through the steps of opening a business in a hispanic country, and present it to our class. Above is the link to our powerpoint.
