LIRA
This half term, our main texts have been linked to our topic which was all about plastic pollution. Throughout, we explored a range of vocabulary, answered a wide range of questions, identified the purpose of features of a range of non-fiction texts, and explored closely the use of language.
What A Waste
Firstly, we read What A Waste (a non-fiction text which details the issues the environment is facing).
Greta's Story
Our second text of the half term was Greta's Story, another non-fiction text which looks closely at the life of Greta Thunberg, what lead her to become passionate about the environment, and all of her achievements.
The Pied Piper of Hamelin
Our final book of the half term was the Pied Piper. This fiction text allowed us to explore the legendary tale in more detail.
Literacy
Non-Chronological Report
Our first unit of writing this half term was a non-chronological report on the importance of 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle'. We looked at using facts instead of opinions and writing using technical language.
Persuasive Formal Letter
Our second piece of writing was a persuasive formal letter to Mrs Padfield. In this letter, we attempted to convince Mrs Padfield of the benefits of recycling bins. We explored writing in a formal manner and using rhetorical devices to make the reader think.
Topic
Our focus in topic this half term has been Geography where we have explored plastic pollution and its effect around the world. We focused our study on Hawai'i where one of the beaches is the most affected by plastic pollution.
We practiced many geographical skills such as:
- Using atlases
- Using compass points for direction
- Identifying locations using four-figure grid references
Things to Celebrate!
Fire Safety
This half term, the children were visited by a Fire Safety Officer and discussed how we can keep ourselves and others safe in a fire. They explored what would happen at school and the importance of having procedures in place at home.
Competitions
Some of our Year 3/4 children took part in football and hockey competitions. They demonstrated our school values of resilience and teamwork!
Fitness Festival
Some children also took part in a Fitness Festival where they had lots of fun playing games and learning dance moves!
Celebration Certificates
Mapplewell Points
We have had even more children showing off our school values to reach a massive 50 points and earn a prize from the points shop!
The children with the most points from Autumn 2 were invited to a tea party!
