Class of 2023

Graduation Guidelines

  • We are at the start of graduation planning and are looking to celebrate the accomplishments of our Class 2023
  • The commencement will take place on June 2, 2023 at 7:00 PM in the Theatre.
  • The below document will provide further details along with frequent updates from Dr. Warshany, Mr. Winnington, and Dean Bolden.

Senior Privilege Review

  • Students in Red Clay take demanding course loads and may also have demanding work and/or rehearsal schedules outside of the school day. Cab Calloway School of the Arts SENIORS with a study hall that meets during the first or last periods of the day may take advantage of Senior Privilege.
  • Students MUST arrive to school five minutes before their first scheduled class and leave prior to the last scheduled class period in a given school day, provided the information on this form is current and accurate.
  • Students abusing this opportunity will see their privilege revoked. Revocation is at the complete discretion of the administration.
  • This includes attending school during senior privilege scheduled time but not accounted for while in the building. All seniors who have this privilege can’t pick and choose to leave the building at will.

Cab Calloway School Fund Scholarship

  • This program was created by MBNA in 1995 to honor the legendary Cab Calloway. These competitive scholarships range up to $1,000 per student and can be used for any arts subject taught at Cab Calloway School of the Arts (CCSA).
  • Students currently in 6th - 11th grade are eligible to apply. The intention is to enrich the arts education of CCSA students, specifically during the summer when CCSA is not in session, but when highly rated summer programs are offered.
  • The number and size of awards depends on how much the endowment has earned.

Kappa Alpha Psi Achievers Program

  • Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated are accepting Junior and Senior applicants to the Achievers Leadership Program.

Choice Requirements and Major Changes
  • We are honored to serve the academics and artistic growth of our students. We have committed resources and programming through multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS), including a after-school support program starting this marking period.
  • It is important to note that we do follow the state Choice guidelines for maintaining enrollment here at Cab Calloway School of the Arts.
  • Students who do not meet the standard for attendance, academics, and behavior will receive a Choice Termination Warning Letter.
  • Students who are desire to change majors must complete the attached form. There must be administration approval based upon availability in the requested major.
Dr. Judith Montilla: Spanish Teacher
  • We would like to thank Dr. Montilla for her service here at CCSA as the Spanish teacher.
  • She will be taking on a new opportunity effective February 13, 2023
  • We are in the final round of interviews with two outstanding candidates.
  • There will be lesson plans and materials provided for the substitute during this transition.
Julie Katz: LTS Music Teacher
  • Ms. Julie Katz classes will have a LTS until the end of May.
  • We have one LTS with extensive music experience and former Cab Alumni who will take on the assignment in early March.
  • We have a substitute assigned to the position with upperclassmen (Piano and Vocal Majors) supporting the classroom during this transition.

CAB CALLOWAY SCHOOL OF THE ARTS HIGHLIGHTS:

NHS and BSU MLK Day of Service

  • Our Cab Calloway School of the Arts National Honor Society and Black Student Union sponsored a MLK Day of Service clothing drive that benefited local families and Friendship House Homeless Shelter.

North Carolina Central University Jazz Program

  • In January, North Carolina Central University’s Jazz Studies program has earned a reputation as one of the premier university programs. The program was started by the great jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd and brought to prominence by legendary saxophonist/flutist and educator Dr. Ira Wiggins, who retired in June 2021.
  • Alumni of the program include internationally renowned solo performing, recording and touring musicians, band leaders, and instrumentalists performing with jazz greats, including Gregory Porter, Houston Person, Kim Burrell, Prince, Joey Calderazzo, Branford Marsalis, Jazzmeia Horn, Andy Bey, John Legend, Rhapsody, Erykah Badu, Shirley Caesar, Fred Hammond, Janelle Monae and other
  • NCCC Jazz Band performed in front of staff and students during an assembly days before capturing first place at the Jack Rudin Jazz Championship at the Lincoln Center in NYC.
  • The ensemble successfully competed against jazz programs from renowned institutions across the country such as the Peabody Conservatory, Michigan State, Vanderbilt, Texas Southern as well as many others.

Otto Tunes Group

  • In January, our students and staff participated in an All-school assembly to hear the acapella group “Otto Tunes” from Syracuse University.
  • This group of young men were on their Northeast Winter Tour and stopped at Cab to share their music and talent with us!

Maddie Barry: The Hand Gallery

  • Hand Gallery Interactive Experience will feature a collection of hand artworks from high school students of all grades.
  • In addition, the back wall of the art gallery will feature six artworks accompanied by QR codes. These will link the viewer to an interactive art survey that analyzes how the artwork is interpreted by the public.
  • Participants were able take an optional survey that helped advance the research through their own interpretations of the works.
  • Even if you were not able to make it to the opening, you can still participate by taking the survey! I'm attaching a poster for the event which has the QR codes on it
Sphinx Junior Division: Gabriel Salvador Reira
  • Congratulations to Gabriela Salvador Riera taking second place at the Sphinx Competition Junior Division.
  • She played beautifully on Friday with the Sphinx Symphony Orchestra, the unique all Black and Latinx orchestra comprised of top professionals from around the country.

Congressional App Challenge Winners: Irwin Wang and Maya Perry
  • Two Cab students, Irwin Wang and Maya Perry, were the winners of the 2022 Congressional App Challenge, which is a program that encourages students to join the STEM field and compete in a competition to build an app of their choice.
Middle States Council for Social Studies Teacher to Teacher Award: Andrew Bedell
  • Please join me in congratulating Andrew Bedell on being awarded the Middle States Council for Social Studies Teacher to Teacher Award.
  • He will be honored at the MSCSS conference at the end of February.
  • Parents and students please take some time to recognize and celebrate our School Counselors here at Cab Calloway School of the Arts.
  • We have a dynamic group of counselors that go above and beyond.
  • We thank Kim Rigby, Dale McKenzie, Brenda Akim, and Brandon Townsend as our School Counselors.

Academic Updates

Students presenting their Action to Research Project in Mrs. Bear’s classroom
  • We will be offering Academic After-School Support Program on Monday and Thursday from 2:30-4:30 PM for students who are in danger of failing and with chronic attendance.
  • The program will begin on February 13th-May 11th.

Asian Student Association Celebrating Chinese New Year

Student Extracurricular Activities
  • Students have until 3:30 PM to wait in the lobby for their ride.
  • The lobby is not for students to loiter for social time.
  • All 10-12th grade students leaving campus must sign in the front office upon return.
  • Attendance will be kept by club advisor or supervising staff.
  • Congratulations to Coach Reese Rigby, Coach Haycraft, and CSW Wrestling Team.
  • Our very own Cab Teachers coached the wrestling team a well fought season with a recent critical win against Tatnall.
