What does the first day of school mean to you?

Northeast FIRST Robotics

On Saturday, August 20th, the girls from Northeast FIRST Robotics Teams 12722 and 9931 teamed up to participate in an All Girls Robotics Tournament at Kettering University. Archa Nair, Kayden Metcalf, Mary Riddle, and Natasha Kuchnicki competed in the FIRST Tech Challenge event, while Maribel Grasman from the MHS "Like a Boss" FIRST Robotics Competition team was coach and spirit captain. It was an eventful day starting with the arm motor breaking before the competition began. But with many helping hands and another team graciously lending parts, our robot mechanics were able to brainstorm a solution to get the robot working. The team competed well, ending in 4th place at the end of qualifying match play. The combined Northeast team was selected to join the first-seed team in an alliance for the playoffs. The playoffs brought fierce competition. In a "best of 3" tournament, the Northeast Girls won the semifinals but fell in the final round in the 3rd match. The tournament was a lot of fun. The girls proved to themselves that they could perform under pressure, gained many new skills, and built their confidence. It was a successful day and a perfect way to bring on the new season, which kicks off on September 10th!

New Generation of Explorers: Dow High Space Farmers Harvested STEM “Seeds” at the International Space Station Research and Development Conference

Today, August 29, NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) launches Artemis I to orbit the moon - its return will not only help scientists better understand how deep space affects terrestrial biology but will also be one step closer to landing the first woman and first person of color on the moon.

Dow High Space Farmers also made a milestone in their space botany research last month. Margaret E. Hitt, Jessica Chai, Nimai Patel, and Aaron Li presented "Harvesting STEM Seeds through Multiple Utilization of the Growing Beyond Earth (GBE) Program" at the Annual International Space Station Research and Development (ISS R&D) Conference in Washington, D.C. on July 27. Their space botany research results suggested an economical solution for providing fresh vegetables that may safeguard astronauts' health in long-term space missions. They also shared their GBE-influenced STEM projects, including Margaret's development of a mathematical model to portray the patterns of light intensities in a simulated NASA growth chamber, Nimai and Aaron's establishment of an effective procedure for separating substances from a given mixture, and Jessica's hand sanitizer experiment on testing different concentrations of ethanol and isopropanol against the development of E. Coli bacteria.
