Nhyiraba Asumadu Addo Selected as a Battle of the Brains All-Star

Senior Nhyiraba Asumadu Addo has been selected to represent Fork Union Military Academy in the Battle of the Brains All-Star competition. The All-Star competition features eight standout players from the 36-team Battle of the Brains Tournament.

Asumadu Addo is a senior from Accra, Ghana and is the son of Kofi and Vivian Asumadu Addo.

The All-Star participants were hand selected by the Battle of the Brains staff. The eight All-Star players will be split up into two teams and will compete virtually on Wednesday, April 27. The match will air on WTVR – Channel 6 this June.

Asumadu Addo joins juniors Jackson Pretus, Dino Siervo and Ousmane Dieng on the Blue Devil squad, who have reached the quarterfinals of the tournament. Coached by Dr. Alexander Welch, the quartet defeated Princess Anne High School, 235-225, in the first round and Monacan High School, 205-195, the second round to advance to the quarterfinals. Fork Union will face First Colonial High School, which airs in a few weeks.

The Battle of the Brains is Central Virginia’s longest running TV high school academic quiz show. Broadcasted throughout Virginia over the years, Battle of the Brains has highlighted the diversity and intelligence of more than 3,500 of the brightest young minds of The Commonwealth.

The Battle of the Brains Season 19 competitions can be found on its YouTube Channel.

Congratulations to Asumadu Addo and the Battle of the Brains team!

Fork Union Welcomed Brigadier General Teresa Djuric to Campus

Colonel David Coggins was honored to welcome Brigadier General Teresa Djuric to campus Friday, April 15. Djuric is the Commandant of the Cadet Corps for the Virginia Women’s Institute for Leadership at Mary Baldwin University. The US Air Force Retired Brigadier General is also the Senior Advisor to the university’s president.

The General addressed the Corps of Cadets during an extended Commandant’s Call and delivered a powerful message about leadership. She emphasized two leadership skills: service and change management. When you face adversity, you need to stay calm and stay positive while managing change. You should serve others before yourself, stay motivated and have a positive perspective. She stressed if you learn those skills, you will be successful no what you do as a leader.

General Djuric is responsible for the nation’s only all-female cadet corps, developing leaders and citizens of character, guiding and training student leaders, and ensuring effective operations of the Corps.

General Djuric was commissioned in 1983 through Officer Training School. She has operated space systems at three space wings and Headquarters 14th Air Force. In 2004, she deployed to Southwest Asia as Director of Space Forces for operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. She has commanded at the squadron, group, wing and education center levels, and has served on staffs at the Air Force Personnel Center, U.S. Pacific Command, Headquarters US Air Force and the Office of Secretary of Defense.

Prior to her current assignment, she was Deputy Director in the Space and Intelligence Office and Chief of Staff to the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics, the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. where she led the Under Secretary's strategic planning and programming for defense space programs valued at $12 billion.

Thank you for visiting, General Djuric!

This Week's College Acceptances

Our cadets in the Class of 2022 continue to stack up college acceptance letters!

Our goal each year is that 100% of our seniors gain college acceptance, and the Class of 2022 had already achieved that goal as of December 13th. This amazing accomplishment is a credit to the hard work done by our seniors and the excellent support given to each one of them by our College Placement and Academic Services team under the leadership of the department's Director, Kelsey Hill, and the Assistant Director, Dr. James Benson.

Congratulations to our seniors in the Class of 2022, and a big thank you to the members of our Department of College Placement and Academic Services!

Cadets Mitchell Coe and Wesley Lay Complete Eagle Scout Service Projects

Senior Mitchell Coe and junior Wesley Lay have completed their Eagle Scout Service Projects this year.

Last week, Coe organized a group of cadets to rejuvenate the Memorial Garden, which is located on the Middle School Circle here on campus. The group weeded and laid mulch around the area. The garden was created by the Middle School Grief Group in 1999 to keep the ones we love eternally within the circle of life.

This past winter, Lay created a fire safety station for water collection that is available for safely and properly putting out campfires in the primitive camping area of Curtis Park in Stafford, Virginia. There is no available water source within a half mile of this area.

Bravo, gentlemen!
