Boarders' Bulletin November/December 2021

Welcome to the November/December issue of the boarders bulletin, packed full of events leading up to Christmas.

It has been great to see some normality return to boarding this half of term starting on a high with the annual boarders’ bonfire, with the added bonus of fire spinners. This popular boarding event has gone from strength to strength and it is hoped we can raise the bar further next year with a small firework display!!!

We have been fortunate that most of the boarding activities have gone ahead unscathed with our largest ever group skating at Somerset House. All houses have been decorating their houses to bring in the Christmas cheer and Harry’s artwork in the Rammell window is a masterpiece.

As we approach the end of term all houses have had or are preparing for their Christmas meals and the schools annual Christmas jumper day and Christmas lunch are just around the corner.

We are hopeful that school will commence as planned, with boarders returning on the 4th January from 6pm.

NOTICES - Start of Term

• We are unable to provide a minibus pick up on Tuesday evening so please ensure relevant transport is arranged in advance form the airports/train station.

• All boarders are required to be Covid tested on their return to boarding houses. These tests must be administered at school, so please bear with houses as we have to process these results before admitting boarders into houses.

• International boarders will need to ensure they have booked a PCR test which should be taken on their arrival to the UK on 4th January. These boarders will remain isolating in houses until their negative PCR result arrives (boarders arriving before the 4th of January must isolate at guardians until they receive their negative PCR result and return to boarding houses from the 4th once this is received).

A look ahead to next term...

Lots of trips planned for next half term (Covid situation permitting) including:

• Bluewater Shopping - Sunday 9th January

• Cinema - Sunday 16th January

• Bowling - Sunday 23rd January

• Bedgebury Biking - Sunday 30th January

• Canterbury Shopping trip - Sunday 6th February

THE HOUSES

Scott

It has been a busy and packed half term. The girls have been regulars signing up for the weekend activities programme, with skating at Somerset House a highlight.

This term saw the first Scott and Rammell quiz, which was led by our Social Captain Hannah, well done to the year 12s who came runners up. We have seen increasing numbers representing the house this term in inter house hockey and the super Saturday programme, which bodes well for next term.

The usual festive activities in house have been in abundance, consisting of gingerbread making, Bedgebury lights, Somerset house ice skating, House Christmas dinner, Secret Santa and the always hilarious Christmas sketches. It always amazes me how entertaining the girls can be on the last night of term!!

A special mention to Nerea our Charity Rep who rallied the house to support the homeless charity by supplying unwanted winter clothes, the house donated two large bin liners full of clothes.

We are all looking forward to a well-deserved break, particularly the year 11, 12 and 13s who have all worked hard for their exams this half term. Nothing left to say except have a very happy and healthy Christmas and see you in 2022.

Rammell

Merry Christmas From Everyone in Rammell! It’s been a refreshingly busy first term in the house, with a return to the homely feel that is so important to the ethos of Rammell.

The social rooms have been alive with games, music, chat, more heated chat, tea, occasional study and most importantly, laughter.

I would like to thank the whole house for buying into the Rammell spirit. There is a very special atmosphere among this group of boys and no matter whether they are playing ultimate frisbee, going for a walk in the rain, tidying the kitchen or organising a dodgeball tournament, I am always proud of the inclusive ‘have a go’ vibe.

The tutor groups have all had two trips, and our House Captain, Muhammad, and his senior students have organised a number of whole house activities and social events. Highlights have been dominating Cornwallis at football and basketball and outwitting Scott in general knowledge. It has been a great term and I look forward to the usual fun and games on the last night of term.

Blubery

A busy term in Blubery! We kicked off the second half of the autumn term in style with fireworks in the paddock. The weather was on our side as it was again when we joined the rest of the boarding community for the boarder's bonfire with hot chocolate and sparklers.

Tutor trips, something very much reduced last year due to Covid, were back with a bang this term with Year 9 heading off to Slap n Dash for some pottery painting, Year 12 out for dinner and Year 13 going to Bluewater for ice skating and Byron Burger. It has also been a term packed with whole house activities including Christmas card making, inter-house sport, and a mini-Thanksgiving celebration!

One of the highlights this term was the house theatre trip to see Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Cinderella; it was an amazing feeling to be back out in 'theatreland' and had been very much missed.

We rounded off the term with a fantastic festive treat, a meal at The Castle Inn at Bodiam. It was a lovely atmosphere with excellent food which we followed up with mince pies, yule log, secret Santa and sketches back at Blubery.

It's exhausting just reading it all back, but we have certainly made the most of the term and we have our fingers crossed that Omicron will turn out to be more of a ripple than a wave...Happy Christmas from all at Blubery!

Crowden

How great was it to start to feel the freedoms of old. The beginning of term was a buzz with energy and optimism from the boys.

There have been so many highlights, from the involvement of many in cross country to spooky fun at the Halloween party, from Crowden classics like dodgeball and many games of basketball. Do keep track of these on our Facebook page.

There's a homely feel in the house too, with new furniture, a coffee machine for the 6th form and a promised table tennis table to look forward to.

With increasing cases recently it is a shame that some of the boarding trips were cancelled, but we managed to get out and have a fabulous time at High Rocks - a great way to celebrate Christmas and all the hard work that has gone into the longest of terms.

It's been a great term, and I wish everyone a restful and safe Christmas holiday!

School Lodge

This term has been a resounding success. All the boys have settled so quickly into School Lodge life and at the end of this first Term they can look forward and no longer call themselves 'newbies'.

For many, boarding has been a new experience and probably at times daunting, but they've done themselves proud, especially coping with the constantly meandering threat of COVID who, for some, has impacted their term with the annoyance of isolation at various points.

On a sporting front, 15 of the boys in the House have represented the school for rugby playing in the first and second teams. 5 boys have taken part in the local park runs – a couple of whom probably didn’t realise what they were signing themselves up for! Remember boys, the K in 5K stands for one thousand metres!! 🙂 6 of the boys have played in the School basketball team and 3 came in the top 10 for the School Cross Country event. School Lodge is fortunate to have some outstanding musicians, who have taken part in the Newcomers Concert, the Remembrance Service and whole-school assemblies.

Weekends have been busy with the majority of the boys staying in House and many of them taking part in weekend activities – from paintballing to watching DanSing, a show put on for the kids and by the kids!

As we look forward to next term I just wanted to thank all the boys and parents for this term. It's been a great adventure, and hopefully one of many successful terms to come!!

Cornwallis

The first term in Cornwallis is always very busy and it’s been a fantastic first term jam-packed full of various activities..

Some of the many include BBQs, bat wrangling, paintballing, raft building, quizzes, coach house nights, bonfires, lots of rugby, dinners, walks, and movies, unofficial and official inter-house football and basketball competitions, ice skating, and various teenage flirtations and heart breaks as well as all of the usual shenanigans that go on when I am not looking!

It’s been amazing having all these activities back, after losing so many of them in recent times due to COVID. The boys have truly embraced the Cornwallis House spirit by getting fully involved, and I am sure they will return home for Christmas this year with many stories to tell.

Wishing you all a happy and relaxing Christmas and a happy New Year. See you in 2022!!
