October Newsletter

Dear parents and carers,

Alongside the great learning going on in the classrooms day-to-day, we have had many FARMERS FOREVER moments in and around school this month. We have also seen the selection of many new pupil leaders across school with our new librarians and eco-committee receiving their badges in assembly today and hopefully, each class will have their digital leaders in place by next Friday to receive their badges too. The eco-committee have already had their first meeting in which they wrote a letter to Blooms to see if they can get a Christmas tree donated and started cleaning up the old lunch trolleys to use for the book swap box.

A couple of weeks ago, we welcomed James Brunt, a nature artist, into school to create a wonderful collaborative piece of art down in our forest school area with all our pupils.

While this was going on at school, most of Year 6 were away in Shropshire on their residential at Condover Hall. There are lots of pictures from the week on our blog pages, which you can access from the home page of our school website.

Over the past 2 weeks, many year 5 pupils have been learning some essential bike riding skills and road safety in their Bikeability sessions and the instructors have been very pleased with their behaviour and attitude to learning these new skills.

This week, we celebrated hats on for mental health day and raised funds for Coventry and Warwickshire Mind. The payment is still available in your school money account if you have not yet made a donation but would like to. This will close next Friday to allow us to work out our final total! Thank you to everyone who has donated already.

It has been a very charitable month here at AFJS as we also collected an incredible amount of food for the Rugby Foodbank in our Harvest appeal, which Mr Issitt delivered for us this week. It felt like a lot more than we collected last year and I look forward to getting the information from the foodbank to see if we really did exceed last year's donations - a new challenge to beat for next year! :) Thank you to everyone who donated so generously to this great cause.

Tonight it is the annual PTA quiz and I look forward to seeing lots of you there to test your brain power and enjoy a nice family night out, all while raising funds for our school.

Next week is parents evening and it will be lovely to have you all into school to meet with your child's class teachers. If you have somehow missed the links that were sent out to book an appointment or just totally forgot to book one, please get in touch with the office to see if there are any spaces still available.

from Mrs Webb :)

The AFJS PTA needs you

A huge thank you to the parents that attended our PTA AGM this week and helped us to start putting plans in place for the events coming up this term, including the Christmas Fair and refreshments at the Carol Concerts and Y3/4 Christmas Play Performances. New committee members were elected but we really do need more of you to start joining us for these meetings as, without your support, we will not be able to keep the PTA going. As children leave in year 6, inevitably parents will 'retire' from the AFJS PTA and we need new parents coming to the school to come along and help us boost our numbers. We always get lots of willing volunteers on the day of the events but it is attendance at committee meetings that we need to increase or these events will not be able to happen at all! Here are some of things that happen every year with the support of our PTA:

  • Whole school panto
  • Y6 Leavers BBQ
  • Y6 Leavers gifts
  • Hanging baskets at the front of school
  • Our Christmas tree

Last year, the PTA contributed sizeable funds towards the development of our school grounds (see pictures below) which children have used at lunchtimes, during forest school sessions and for curriculum lessons in year 3, amongst many other things.

This year, the support of the PTA has already provided children with a great FARMERS FOREVER day, working with a nature artist in the grounds of our school and they are also funding the diwali dance workshops that years 3 to 5 will be taking part in next month as part of our whole school Diwali celebrations.

Other ways you can help...

Fundraising is not just limited to the events, we raise a lot of funds through ongoing charity initiative such as the Rugby Lotto and Easy Fundraising - see details below and get signed up now to help raise money with very little effort.

HOME-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

Following some staffing changes and our increased use of Seesaw for communication, we have made some changes to our communication flowchart. Please see images below or click on the button to visit the relevant page on our school website.
