JULIUS AGBAJE Collector's Preview & Offer. JUNE. 2022

.

Julius Agbaje (b. 1992) is a Nigerian conceptual artist who works primarily as a painter. The famous phrase "Art is a tool for change" is the creed that fuels his entire artistic practice, as is reflected in his paintings, his writings and even his penchant for volunteerism. He is an alumnus of the Arts in Medicine Fellowship, where he also served as the Director of Art Projects in Lagos for a short period.

Julius thinks of his creative process as a journal that documents his transition through life, his connections and interactions with other humans and human activities. In his compositions, he typically situates himself or his chosen subject in different poses at the centre of specific human activities peculiar to his chosen context. He adopts pipes in his painting technique as a metaphor for the interconnectedness of humans and human activities.

His passion for justice and fairness has often spurred him to take on activism-related issues. He infuses humour and metaphors as a means of reeling his audience into his narrative space while addressing issues which he finds interesting or important. Some of his works were widely adopted as symbols for several placards and poster designs on and off social media during the 2020 End SARS protests across Nigeria and abroad. He continues to lend his voice to various ongoing injustices against humanity with his art.
