A Plethora of Birds Mud Lake March 14, 2022

It seemed that spring was in the air and the birds were out enjoying the weather.

A few years ago wild turkeys appeared at Mud Lake, a male and female seemed to be present for the summer. Last year "Gertrude", the female, raised six little ones, the father was no where to be seen.

Today, a number of suitors were on the scene courting Gertrude.

The over-wintering robins were more in the open, snacking on berries. They did look a little pale however.

A good number of cardinals were singing away and the trills of the returning male red-winged blackbirds could be heard.

Along one section of the trail the woodpeckers were lying in wait for handouts. Mainly downy woodpeckers, but for the first time a hairy came to hand.

A pair of wood ducks had returned early. They were mixed in with the mallards down on the river. In one of the photos with the male wood duck in the midst of the mallards, I spotted a mallard that had lost one foot.

A brief video collection of the action.
