🗣️ The @icememory_ Foundation presents its new expedition on Kilimanjaro to preserve the ice memory from Africa’s iconic glacier. Embark with our international team of scientists to sample these ice cores in order to preserve their precious environmental and climate data for future generations. The emblematic glaciers of Kilimanjaro are the only ones that can still provide the quality of ice that is essential for paleoclimatic and environmental studies of the African continent: the history of East Africa and its inhabitants is trapped and preserved in the ice crystals of Kilimanjaro.
“This is a frozen library containing 12,000 years of climatic and environmental archives. Kilimanjaro’s residual ice is an absolute priority objective for the international glaciological community. It represents a common heritage of humanity, and is the unique witness to past climate and environmental changes in Africa,” - Patrick Ginot, glaciologist and geochemist, IRD (IGE-UGA, CNRS, Grenoble-INP) and Ice Memory Kilimanjaro 2022 expedition leader
KEY DATA
An international team of scientists will reach Kilimanjaro’s Northern glacier in Tanzania today on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, setting up camp at an altitude of 5,800 meters.
Their objective is to extract six ice cores, unique archives of the East African climate and environment. They will be preserved for centuries to come at a dedicated #IceMemory Sanctuary in Antarctica. Future generations of scientists will thus have access to high-quality ice cores.
Like most glaciers, the ones on Kilimanjaro are retreating due to climate change.
“Glaciers will disappear in the coming decades, constituting an irretrievable loss. Over the last century, the glaciers of Kilimanjaro have retreated considerably. The Kilimanjaro ice cap is shrinking at a rapid pace, and is projected to disappear entirely by 2040-2060. Humanity cannot afford to lose such vital information,” says Jérome Chappellaz, Glaciologist - CNRS and Chairman of the Ice Memory Foundation
