Outdated Patent System is Fueling the High Cost of Drugs
The original purpose of the US Patent system was to encourage inventions. Today, that plan is past the creation of a new medicine; instead, it removes the competition and creates treatments that are too expensive to treat. In the past eight years, the top-selling drugs have increased approximately 68%... or 7x the inflation rate, and thus, people cannot afford the medication needed to survive.
TedTalk Speaker Priti Krishtel, Patent attorney, suggests 5 steps to create a modern patent system. Listen to this eye-opening TedTalk:
For those that prefer to read: a quick summation of the steps to reform:
• Raise the standard for new Patents – Today, minor tweaks to drugs that do not therapeutically make the medication better can still obtain a new patent. Raise the bar!
• Amend incentives for the Patent office – Incentives linked to quantity, not quality.
• Increase public participation – The patent system is like a black box. A 2-way conversation between the patent office and corporation
• The right to go to court – After a patent is granted, the public has no legal standing.
• Expanded Oversight on Patent Office – There is a need for an independent unit to serve as a public advocate that has a direct line to Congress (think Silicon Valley company, Theranos, debacle could have been avoided).
Broadcasting to you, live at 2:00 AM from our office on the beaches of Bora Bora….
Welcome to our first Side Affects podcast of 2022 - Kenzie and Scott welcome Michael Denisoff, President and CEO of Employers Resource Association. With over 30 years of assisting companies, Michael shares his observations of The Great Resignation and how to balance the multi-generational workforce. Due to the recent disruption in personnel, Michael sees significant changes in the definition of benefits. Simply put, the employee desires the same recognition of their job, but the scene looks different, a beach in Bora Bora perhaps. It’s time to ask, “as an employee of this company, what’s important to you?” Click, watch, or listen to Michael’s guidance on this important topic.

Presidential Executive Orders will abound, expanding employers’ obligations to their employees. And don’t forget about ransomware attacks and cybersecurity concerns which are mounting as well. It is one thing, as an employer, to say you are diverse and inclusive, but it's another to confirm it in writing. Creating policies from patrons and employees' benefit requests have brought this subject to our central focus. The key is to meet the demands of your current personnel so they will stay and attract others with new-age benefits, and a first step is to reduce the restrictions of hiring talent. Read these policies that have been the most active and consider how they might affect your workforce.
