The Mayfield Way Spring Newsletter March 2023

Principal Introduction

Welcome to the Easter edition of our newsletter which signals the close of another busy and productive term. The newsletter is an opportunity for you to celebrate with us the incredible Team Mayfield.

Our students and staff have been living and breathing our Mayfield Way of being Kind, Proud and Determined. From the amazing opportunities provided across the taught curriculum to the vast enrichment programme of clubs, classes, visits and of course the school production! There really is something for everyone to be part of.

Parent and carer feedback is very important to us. With the Senior Leadership Team I will continue to host drop-ins where you can find out more about how we put our Mayfield Way into practice and for you to feedback your questions, concerns and suggestions.

This time of year is always a reflective one for us as the promise of the Summer Term brings warmer days and lighter evenings. It is always tinged with some sadness as Year 11 prepare for their final examinations and prepare to depart for pastures new. I’m sure you would like to join me in wishing them the very best in their endeavours.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support for our school community and to wish you all a happy and safe Easter.

YEAR 11

It’s been a busy term for Year 11 they have also sat their final set of Mocks which went well with less than 30 school days until their GCSEs the maturity levels that were shown were outstanding all the way through, they were nervous however they rose to the challenge. They have come so far as a year group and as a Year 11 team we are so proud of you all. This is now their last full term and everything they have worked for the last five years. We have the prom coming up on Friday 23rd June to celebrate the success on a whole of each student. Below is what we have got up to this term:

Humanutopia

As part of preparing Year 11 for the next steps in their lives as they come to the end of their time here at Mayfield, we invited Humanutopia to lead a special day with the year group called “The Final Push”. Year 11 were involved in a series of events that were designed to help them reflect on how their decisions, choices and actions can impact on themselves and others. The whole day was an exceptionally moving experience that enabled an inner confidence in some pupils that they never realised they had.

Our Year 11 pupils were a credit to #TeamMayfield showing outstanding levels of maturity and behaviour whilst getting fully involved in all the activities. The workshop was very well received by pupils who stated that whilst it was emotional, it opened their eyes to how their actions can affect the people around them and made them think about how they might act differently in future.

Jolene McCormick, Head of Year 11, described the day as:

“A thoroughly enjoyable experience for the year group but also the Year 11 team of tutors and leaders. It was thought provoking and challenging at times, not a dry eye in the room at one point! It was also engaging throughout with a few laughs. I believe that the pupils gained a great deal from the day.”

Some of the Year 11 students said to that the day was:

“Humanutopia was a good experience for the whole of year eleven. It gave off a sense of maturity for the whole year and gave people a chance to thoroughly listen to everyone and what they have been going through overall human utopia was a 10/10 experience and brought the year group closer.” Mia W
“It was such a good experience, I regained connections I had lost with people and heard people’s stories. It felt good connecting and communicating as a year group in a respectful way where people want to hear you and you want to hear them. It was amazing.” Rhiannon C
“I really enjoyed humantopia because I think it brought the yr11 year group together and got all of us understanding what each other are going through. Also, I think that it gave people an opportunity to be able to get things off their shoulders which I think was a very big part of the whole process.” Jessica D

Curriculum Focus

Art

Year 7

Since September, year 7 have been learning about the elements of art and how they can be created. Students have studied: line, tone, texture and are currently learning about colour. They have been learning about different tints, tones and shades of colours and how they can blend colours together. Students will be moving on to study the work of Kelly Stanford to help them further their understanding of how colour is used in art.

Year 8

Year 8 students have started working on their coastal art projects. The project focuses on print making techniques and is helping the students to understand how the elements of art can be used and applied in print making. Students have completed monoprinting and are now moving on to learn about collagraph printing.

Year 9

Year 9 students have started an art project focused on structures. The project has been organised so that year 9 students can experience what art is like at GCSE level. This is to help them make a more informed decision around their guided choices. The project also helps students to develop their own responses to the work of other artists focusing on how the elements of art can be applied to add meaning to a piece of art. Students are just beginning to create monoprints in response to the theme.

Year 10

Year 10 students are working hard on their first coursework project. The students have completed a range of artist studies and responses. They have started to develop their own ideas for a response to the theme Urban Environments and are working towards finishing the project by the end of the Easter holidays. Students have been invited to an open studio every Wednesday 3pm until 4pm to help them complete work and make use of the studio’s equipment.

Year 11

Year 11 students have begun their final exam project and are working towards developing an idea for a finished piece of that. This finished piece of art will be completed during the 10-hour exam. Students have been working towards weekly deadlines to help them keep up to date and on track. The students are currently responding to their second artist and developing a range of unique and interesting pieces of art. All students have access to task lists on Microsoft teams with specific goals and targets for each student. The students have also been invited to make use of the art studio every Wednesday 3pm until 4pm. It is important that the students make use of this offer and make the most of the time they have left to complete the exam project.

English

English trips and experiences

So many exciting events have happened and are planned with Team English!

Mr Hall took a group of students to ‘The Globe’ theatre to see an amazing performance of ‘The Tempest’. The performance was filled with laughs, music and amazing costumes and the students loved the experience.

Students from Year 9 also saw a production of ‘Othello’ at the Mayflower Mast and again, this was greeted with enthusiasm from the students who got to see the play they were studying in action.

Our wonderful Year 11 students were given the opportunity to see more performances of their GCSE texts. Last year we treated our students to a production company visit to perform ‘Macbeth’. This year, we have had Quantum Theatre Company perform a chilling account of the English Literature text ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’. We have also been lucky enough to secure tickets to see ‘An Inspector Calls’ in November of last year. No matter how well the students know this text, it was still packed with incredible drama, twists and turns.

In June, Year 7 students are going to visit the ‘Warner Brothers Studio Tour’ where they will enjoy a lesson on creative writing with expert screen writers. Later in June, Year 9 are going to London to see the acclaimed ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ parts 1 and 2 with a tour of the main sights of London in between performances.

Team English are working hard to secure more enrichment experiences and we are ready to listen to our student voice – let us know where you would like to go next!

Year 7

Our year sevens have made a superb impression in English so far this year. Their studies of Greek myths, Antigone and Beowulf have been really engaging and the team have loved being able to explore rich and challenging vocabulary.

Year 8

Our year eights have been working tirelessly on working their study of Shakespeare and, more recently, Romanticism. Students are enjoying exploring the reverence for art and nature, as well as the criticisms of oppressive institutions.

Year 9

Our year nine’s study of ‘Othello’ saw students learning of Iago’s manipulative machinations and further developed their understanding of an Aristotelean Tragic Hero. The year group are now exploring the rich poetry of the Harlem Renaissance.

Year 10

Having completed a study of Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’, our new GCSE students are completing a study of the seminal Victorian Novel by Charles Dickens, ‘A Christmas Carol’. Students have now complete nearly 50% of the English Literature course already.

Year 11

Our GSCE cohort have been busily preparing and taking their mock exams and we are looking forward to sharing successes with students at our upcoming Parents Evening. An intense summer of exams are coming and we’re very excited about what this year group can achieve.

We have also welcomed the West End in Schools theatre group to the academy where many Year 8 students worked with a west end actor on scenes from ‘Romeo and Juliet’.

It has been a fantastic year and we have many more exciting trips planned for after Christmas!

World Book Day

At Oasis Academy Mayfield we were able to celebrate World Book day with our school community. It was brilliant to give our students a taste of what our new library will be like in the next Academic year and we saw hundreds of students take out brand new books to enjoy for the first time.

In lessons, students were able to use e-Platform, our online library, to read for 10 minutes every lesson. Hopefully this opportunity to take ownership of their reading and choose from the thousands of titles we have on offer was one the students enjoyed.

Our librarian, Miss Grant, thoroughly enjoyed taking the library out of the classroom and into the wider school population. We welcome all the readers we can here at Mayfield!

History

Year 7

Currently our Year 7s are working their way up the Silk Road all the way from Baghdad which they studied at the beginning of the year, towards Mongolia. They are trying to understand how the Mongol Empire became the largest land-based empire to ever exist and are finding studying China to be very different to what they’ve already looked at so far this year.

Year 8

Our Year 8s are pulling together a lot of knowledge from the last two years since they came to Mayfield. They are looking at why Charles I was executed as well as why Parliament is more powerful than our monarchy today. They have had to look all the way back to the Normans which they studied in Year 7, comparing it to the Tudors and the Stuarts who they have studied this year to understand why our monarchy is less powerful today. We have been incredibly impressed with them, especially the way they have learnt how to use terms like ‘absolute’ and ‘constitutional’ to describe a king or queen.

Year 9

Right now, Year 9 have been finishing off studying who protested in the nineteenth century? They have been studying several large protests, from Peterloo, Swing Riots and the Chartists to understand the different ways people voice their opinions and try to bring about change in the country. This will take them into their next study of learning when did Democracy arrive in Britain?

Year 10

We are currently halfway through our second GCSE unit with our Year 10s, and we were so impressed by their first ever set of mocks and how quickly they covered the material so far. We have just finished learning why Witchcraft was so rampant across Britain with some focus on Shakespeare’s Macbeth to link to their English studies.

Year 11

Finally, we have finished teaching all four exam units with our Year 11s which is the first time since 2019. They have just completed their study of the Cold War from 1945-1991 and have seen the dissolution of the USSR with some links to the Ukraine and Crimea making an appearance, helping them understand why there is a conflict today in that region. For the rest of the year, they will be focusing on revision habits we have been teaching throughout the year and spending each week alternating their previous studies to prepare them for their end of year exams.

Music

It’s been another busy and creative term in the music department.

Year 7 have been learning different singing techniques and putting these into practice by class singing songs from different genres. I have been particularly impressed by how many students have been brave enough to sing solos!

Year 8 have been learning how to play the Ukulele. They have worked hard and can now play some famous riffs including “We Will Rock You”. They have also learnt how to play various chords in sequence.

Year 9 have been studying Beethoven. They have learnt about the orchestra and have studied how Beethoven created music for different instruments. They have been practising famous Beethoven pieces on the keyboard and have impressed me with their ability to play with two hands at the same time.

Year 10 have begun work on their first GCSE composition. They are using a variety of different composing styles and are using keyboards, drums, guitars and Garage Band software to create their pieces. They are also working hard in their individual music lessons and will be showcasing these skills in the concert next term.

Year 11 have spent the term working on both their GCSE composition and performance coursework. Over the next few weeks they will be finishing these and recording their final versions ready for assessment.

Keyboard club after school on Monday is still proving to be very popular and pupils are also using the practices rooms during break times for individual and group practising.

Religious Education

Year 7’s has been looking at faith stories from the Abrahamic and Dharmic faiths and what these stories reveals about the nature of God. They have examined what the Covenant is and explored what the faith stories of Isaac, Moses and Jesus tell us about the nature of God. Pupils then explore what the revelations of Muhammad and Guru Nanak tell us about the nature of God, pausing to investigate how these beliefs are reflected in the modern world through worship.

Year 8’s has been exploring the themes of philosophy and theology. Pupils have examined how philosophy and theology can be used as a tool to question the nature and purpose of suffering. They examined teachings and interpretations about the origins, nature, and purpose of suffering within the Christian, Islamic and Sikh traditions, as well as considering non-religious worldviews. They have explored theodicies which try to explain the origin and purpose of suffering – for example Irenaeus theodicy and Augustinian theodicy, before moving to examine how different faith communities respond to suffering.

Year 9 students are studying about conflict, war and pacifism. Pupils examine the causes of conflict according to social science and explore the history of the links between religion, war and conflict. They have explored diverse Christian, Islamic and Sikh beliefs, teachings and attitudes towards conflict. They have also examined the diverse ethical and religious attitudes towards pacifism, contextualised by the exploration of the personal conviction of Muhammad Ali. Currently, they have been looking at the complex case-study of Israel and Palestine and the role that religion has and does play within the conflict.

Year 10 and 11 have been working through their GCSE course and are making excellent progress. Year 11 have recently completed their final mock exams on component 2 and 3 on Christianity and Islam. They have recently finished the final unit on Islam Practices and are now working on building exam skills ready for their final GCSE exams come May. Year 10s have been working through the Component 1 on philosophy, ethics, and religion. Recently, they have participated in a debate on the issues surrounding the death penalty, demonstrating their strong ability to reason and make compelling arguments.

Science

It has been a very busy term in the Science department with lots of exciting things going on for all year groups from Science Club to Science Week!

Year 7

In Year 7, students have been learning about “What living things are made of” focusing on all the organ systems that make us human! Students have looked at the cells and got to extract DNA from a kiwi! This has enabled students understand what makes us all unique!

Year 8

In Year 8, students have been looking at different chemical reactions; from looking at how alkali metals react with water to testing for different gases. Students have enjoyed doing practicals and thinking/working like a scientist. Their knowledge of chemical reactions will be developed further as they apply this to look at some of the real-life effects of global warming and climate change.

Year 9

In Year 9, students have focused on the importance of energy in generating electricity. They have looked at the advantages and disadvantages of renewable and non-renewable energy resources on the planet. They have also looked at the uses of different electromagnetic waves – gamma rays which is used in radiotherapy treatments to ultraviolet which causes skin cancer. Students have worked very hard on some difficult calculations this term – something which is beneficial as they start to think about picking their GCSE options.

Year 10

In Year 10, all students have looked at how different scientists have contributed to what we know of the atom today and the importance of collaboration and discourse within the scientific field. Students have studied the different types of radioactive decay and how dangerous and useful these can be from using radiation to sterilise food/equipment to ingesting radiation and the harmful effects of it in the body. Students looked at a case study – the explosion of the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl, Ukraine.

Triple science students have explored Space – looking the Big Bang and Red Shift as well as what happens to stars when they die. This has given them a little taste of Astrophysics! Students have also looked at nuclear power and how we can harness energy from atoms to generate electricity.

Year 11

In Year 11, students have worked hard in their spring mock exams, and we look forward to celebrating their successes with parents at parents evening. We were fortunate to have completed the whole GCSE content and are now revising key topics in lesson in the lead up to their GCSE examinations in the summer. Students who want further support are warmly invited to attend intervention after school on a Tuesday or Wednesday provided they are not in any other subject interventions.

Trips and events

The week of the 13th – 17th March was the National Science Festival. We had the pleasure of Eddie Henbury, a STEM Ambassador from ExxonMobil over two days showing students in Key stage 3 some exciting experiments. He spoke to students about how fossil fuels are used at Exxon and how they try to make them as “friendly” as possible.

Experiments included controlled fire and balloon explosions, as well as incredible experiments like the colour changing blue bottle. Perhaps the most beautiful demo was the green fire tornado, which the students absolutely loved. This really helped the students in their understanding of energy and where it comes from.

One experiment included Eddie’s homemade Tesla coil which can output over 500,000 Volts, the sparks were quite literally hair-raising! Many thanks to Eddie for coming to Mayfield and repeating his sessions 10 times for all to see and enjoy!

We have been thrilled about relaunching the Brightside 1:1 Mentoring Program again this year with several Year 10 students. The opportunity has enabled our pupils to be inspired, supported, and guided by professionals within the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Arts) sector to make confident informed decisions about possible future careers.

The Science and Sustainability Club which meets weekly on Wednesdays has focused on a Mission to Mars theme this term. Pupils completed several investigations: analysed and evaluated the data obtained on aerodynamics and materials to design a suitable 3D model of a spacecraft that could be launched to Mars. Since the weather is turning brighter and warmer, we will be focusing on sustainability next term and investigating sustainable methods of growing crops. We will once again be using the school vegetable patch as part of our investigations. This will also give us an opportunity to contribute towards the Oasis Food Hub by growing our own vegetables.

Looking ahead…

In the Summer term, some students in Year 9 will be completing a day trip to Life Lab at Southampton General Hospital. Life Lab is a unique, state of the art teaching laboratory dedicated to improving adolescent health by giving school students opportunities to learn first hand the science behind health messages. Students partake in a number of engaging practicals, such as measuring their BMI, blood pressure, weight and how to perform CPR on someone. Students will also learn about making healthy lifestyle choices in the future, to maintain their health and fitness into adulthood. Whilst at the hospital students are able to meet with “resident scientists” who work at the hospital, in the past we have found out how different plaster casts are made and moulded to suit different limbs. The day trip is important to make students aware of the different career opportunities available when they leave school and how science plays its part. Students are also able to ask lots of questions about the scientists job role and what it entails.

If any Year 9 or 10 students are interested in going to Life Lab Summer School between the 24th-25th July, please speak with Miss Jones, or their Science teacher to find out more information and how to apply. This is for students who might be looking at a medical career in the future.

Bonjour!

MFL

Year 7 French groups are continuing to build their skills in French and are now able to give opinions about school subjects and describe their teachers.

Year 8 students are learning one of the most important topics…shopping for food – miam, miam!

Year 9 groups are moving on from talking about school in more depth and talking about their future plans.

Year 10 are describing their family and friends, so if your ears are burning you know why! A group of 35 Year 10 students have just come back from a successful trip to France, staying in a PGL château near Paris. They were accompanied by 3 French teachers and Mr Judd and had a very exciting time visiting the Eiffel Tower, doing a boat trip on the River Seine and going on a tour of the Stade de France football ground. We also saw the Sacré Coeur cathedral and the art area of Mont Martre. There was also A LOT of shopping! So many students spoke French. Students spoke to the PGL staff in French, said lots of these: Bonjour, merci, s’il vous plait, au revoir, ordered food and drinks in French and everyone said BONNE NUIT at the end of the day.

Year 11 have just finished their mock exams and are waiting for their results. They are learning about social and environmental issues in French. They have less than 2 months till their actual French speaking exams, which will be their first exam at the start of May. Bonne chance!

Here is an account of the Paris trip, written by Jono Clark (10Y)

On the Paris trip, we began by taking a coach at 5:30 in the morning, eventually arriving at Dover, where we had our passports verified before leaving England on a ferry, which contained many recreational activities such as an arcade, and a beautiful sapphire sea for passengers to gaze upon. Once we arrived in France, we headed to where we would be residing for the trip: Château de Grande Romaine a very large, stately home. It provided beds, a food hall and a gift shop which opened on occasion. When we arrived, dinner was served, and we got to take part in a large scavenger hunt in the castle grounds in different teams to finish off our day before we slept.

The second day in France was very active. After waking up and entering the food hall, we were given a large variety of sandwich fillings for our lunches, ready for the big day in Paris. Shortly after breakfast, we departed on the coach and made our journey to the wonderful country's capital. The architecture in Paris was stunning, Paris was very antique and old-fashioned, which, in my opinion, is what made the city charming! Then we arrived at the 300-meter-high Eiffel Tower, which was an incredible sight but gave an even better view of its city when you were walking on one of its floors, which, provided very good photographic material, to say the least! After the visit to the Eiffel Tower, most of us had our lunches, before riding a boat ride on the river Seine. On this boat-ride, you could see landmarks like le Louvre, the Notre-Dame, and (what looked like) a very large pea factory! Before we left Paris, we were given a tour of the Stade de France. We got to see their small police station and prisons, the changing rooms for the French National Football Team and one of us got to sit in President Emmanuel Macron's chair, who, according to our tour guide, is a fan of football himself! After that visit we went back to Château de Grande Romaine to have dinner and another evening game, before our second day ended.

The third day, unfortunately, was our last, in which we needed to abruptly clean our rooms and leave for one more trip to Paris. We visited le Sacré Cœur, which means The Sacred Heart. Le Sacré Cœur was a large Catholic Cathedral with incredible architecture, the only problem is that we couldn't take any photos of it! And while some of us stayed in le Sacré Cœur, others went shopping around the Mont Martre area, buying souvenirs and other confectionery. Finally, we left Paris in the coach, made our way back to the coast, verified our passports again and left France, back home to England.

Mathematics

World Maths Day

On 8th March, we celebrated World Maths Day. All our Year 7 students took part in World Maths Day Live Mathletics. World Maths Day is a global celebration of learning that has been uniting students around the world with the wonder of numbers since 2007.

All in all, our students enjoyed taking part in the Live Mathletics and appreciated the universality of Mathematics as they were able to race against students as far away as New Zealand or the USA.

GCSE Examinations preparation

Our Year 11 students continue to be hard at work preparing for their GCSE examinations in Maths. They have just completed their second set of mock examinations in February and are reviewing their strengths and areas of development using Pinpoint learning online platform alongside their journey in completing the curriculum.

Pinpoint learning allows each student to input their scores and the system is able to generate individualised set of booklets to support their areas of development while at the same time giving the teacher a summary show the strengths and the areas for development for the class.

Intervention lessons are run throughout the week during period 6 including one Masterclass session on Mondays to give each student the opportunity to achieve their best.

Curriculum

Our students continue to engage with the subject, sharpening their skills, developing their frequency and problem solve.

Our curriculum is guided by the curriculum map below.

Year 7

Year 7 students are just finish 2D Geometry and moving on to the Cartesian plane. In 2D Geometry the students were learning about shapes and their properties. Construction using mathematical instruments and the facts about angles including the angles on parallel lines. In the unit on the Cartesian plane, they will be learning about coordinates and lines.

Interesting fact: Did you know that Cartesian coordinates are named after René Descartes whose invention of them in the 17th century revolutionized mathematics by providing the first systematic link between geometry and algebra.

Year 8

Year 8 students are exploring data both univariate and bivariate data. They are linking their knowledge to everyday life as data is all around us. Using statistical measures of mean, mode, median and range to analyse data including data in frequency tables for both discrete and continuous data.

The students are also learning how to represent data to suit both the data under consideration and the audience to receive the presentations be it in charts or graphs and considering how misleading some graphs can be presented.

Year 9

Year 9 students are learning about equations and inequalities. They are exploring the uniqueness of the solutions to equations as compared to a range of solutions to inequalities. They will be extending their knowledge to forming equations form contexts and solving the resulting equations and making sense of the solutions depending on the context of the problem.

Year 10

Year 10 Higher tier are learning about algebraic fractions. This covers simplifying adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing algebraic fractions leading to solving equations with algebraic fractions.

Next, the students will be learning about simultaneous equations both linear and non-linear including solving using graphs.

Year 10 Foundation Tier

Year 10 Foundation tier are learning about simultaneous equations. They are exploring the ways of solving simultaneous equations focussing on the elimination method. Next, is transformation encompassing reflection, rotation, translation and enlargement.

Year 11 Higher

Year 11 Higher tier are nearing the end of their curriculum. They are currently learning about graphs of cubic, reciprocal, exponential and trigonometric graphs before moving on to algebraic followed by functions.

Year 11 Foundation

Year 11 Foundation are focussing on reviewing the areas of development from their last mock exams. They are learning on how to unpick exam questions looking at command words, key words and how to translate these into actions. This should support their readiness for their final exams in May/June.

Food

Year 7

Year 7 have started their new food rotation looking at the health and safety of being in the food room. They have now completed their first practical lesson making cheese toasties or quesadillas. The students are now moving on to looking at preparing and cooking breakfast items.

Year 8

Year 8 started their new food rotation making Homemade pizza and passata. They have moved onto creating short crust pastry – (jam tarts) and will be moving on to rough puff pastry next (cinnamon swirls).

Year 9

Year 9 have started their food rotation making focaccia and pizzetta using pesto, passata or bianca. They will be moving on to creating lasagne and then pasta sauces.

Year 10

Our Year 10 students are currently studying the science of proteins and carbohydrates. They are doing this those a series of practical lessons in which the students are making meringues, honey comb, American pancakes and custard.

Year 11

The Year 11 students are working towards completing their NEA 2 coursework, They have begun their Final menu practical exam and will be completing this by the end of term. Once this is completed the students will begin to evaluate their menu’s and then move onto focusing on revision for the final exam.

Computer Science

Trips and events

As a relatively new subject to Mayfield (2nd year of the subject being delivered), Computer Science has had an exciting start with a number of clubs, trips and events planned and organized.

We are very proud to offer a couple of clubs including Coding Club on Monday lunchtimes for years 7, 8 and 9 which students get to explore Scratch and Python. Also, a Coding Masterclass club on a Monday after school where students get to learn different programming languages such as C++, HTML, JavaScript and others.

Our year 10 female students (along with some triple science students) got the pleasure of attending Ocean Infinity in Woolston in February. They had the opportunity to see some of the STEM careers with a focus on marine engineering that many other women have had successful careers in within the local area.

STEM trip at Ocean Infinity:

We are also very excited to be organizing an event called "The CODE show" which will be a workshop featuring many computers going back to the 70s, 80s, 90s and early 00s. Students will get to understand these computers and appreciate how far technology has come in the past 20 years. This will feature after the Easter holidays and will be specifically for Years 9, 10 (Computer Science students) and 11 (Computer Science students).

For more information, please follow this link

Year 7

Since September, year 7 have been enjoying the rollout of horizons and getting to know they iPad and how to effectively use it. Whilst doing this they have been studying Communicating online, Spreadsheets and Networks.

Year 8

Year 8 being the first year to receive Computer Science lessons in year 7 and year 8 are now moving on to a variety of creative topics from learning about algorithms, creating their own games in Scratch and now being introduced to learning Python as a programming language.

A game students were working on in Scratch:

Year 9

Year 9 students have been learning about logic gates, creating their own games in scratch and are now working through a bespoke unit of work all around Python. They are learning from the complete basics all the way through to complex, advanced programs which, if they choose Computer Science for a GCSE, they will be much more confident with the tasks. By the end of the unit, all students will be able to create a real program in a programming language.

An example of the programs Year 9 are working on:

Year 10 and 11

Year 10 and 11 have been working hard throughout their GCSE course. Year 11 have recently completed their final mock exams so will be preparing for their final GCSE exams. Year 10 have also been working hard at understanding some of the more complex aspects of programming so are now becoming fluent programmers. Both year groups will be involved in the CODE show workshop.

Geography

The past year we have welcomed two new members of staff joining us: Mr Lambert and Miss Curry. The team have been hard at work teaching our students about a range of both human and physical Geography, covering topics both locally and with a global aspect too.

Year 7 & 8

To prepare Year 7 students for Geography in secondary school, we teach our Year 7s a variety of Geographical topics, but we tend to focus on local examples. At the start of the year we taught Year 7s about the human and physical Geography of Southampton. This involved studying urban developments such as West Quay Shopping Centre, but also looking at the River Itchen too.

Since Autumn, Year 7s have shown great interest in learning about Natural Hazards (we studied examples such as the Japanese Earthquake of 2010), Economic and Social Development, and, currently, Weather and Climate. After Easter, we are excited to teach our Year 7s about Rivers. To bring this topic to life, we will be taking our Year 7 students to study a stream and a river in the New Forest National Park in May.

In Year 8, students continue to build on the foundation established in Year 7. So far this year, students have learned about Cold Environments, Climate Change, Population and Globalisation. The Year will end with a talk from an outside speaker discussing the potential careers Geography can open up to students who want to pursue their Geographical education further.

Year 9

Year 9 started off the year looking at Interconnectedness: essentially, learning how to recognise how every process on Earth has far-reaching implications. With this understanding, we are now teaching students about major biomes, looking at Hot Deserts and Tropical Rainforests. Understanding interconnected systems, students have been learning how these biomes are used for economic development, and the global impacts of this.

Year 9 is really about encouraging a love of learning within Geography. Towards the end of the year, we will recruit our most enthusiastic students to take part in a city-wide Geography Masterminds tournament. This allows a select group of students to show off their Geographical knowledge with the aim of winning a prestigious prize.

Year 10

We are incredibly proud of our Year 10s this year. Each student has approached their first year of GCSE study in a mature manner and this has seen a number of our students excel at their studies.

Starting off studying The Changing Economic World, students gained an insight into how countries progress through various stages of economic development. This included looking at the United Kingdom and the mechanisms through which the country, and urban areas such as Southampton, industrialised and developed.

Currently, Year 10s are studying Coasts and Rivers. After Easter, we will begin teaching students the theory of Fieldwork Skills. Once students are able to plan, research, and show their ability to complete fieldwork confidently, we will be completing a compulsory and assessed fieldwork trip to Hengistbury Head to study coastal processes at the end of June.

What has been happening in Personal Development?

Year 9 have had No Limits BUZZ drugs and alcohol workshops in their Personal Development lessons. These interactive sessions have been really informative and feedback from students and No limits was excellent.

Years 9 - 11 have had Gamcare in delivering workshops on the dangers of online gaming and gambling. The staff delivering were extremely complimentary about our students engagement.

Years 9 - 11 have had talks from SUN (Southern Universities network) in their PD lessons which has given them more information about their options post 16. We have had some really positive feedback based on these workshops.

Years 10 & 11 have had Solent University in giving talks on what life is like at University and these fun and interactive workshops were extremely informative for our students.

Careers Update

This term has been another busy one in terms of careers at the Academy. Every year group has been involved in activities related to careers since the last newsletter and this will continue to highlight to our young people the opportunities available to them in the future.

Students across all year groups have had assemblies from local colleges or universities to highlight all the possible pathways when pupils leave the Academy. These include apprenticeships, with those Year 11 students interested in following this route participating in a workshop to help to make the best of their application provided by external support.

Year 7 had an interactive session with the NHS to highlight the 350+ careers available to them within the NHS. This was interactive session and allowed the pupils to highlight their knowledge and was a great myth-busting session.

Year 8 have also had a session with NHS where the focus was around sport and the volume of roles that exist within the NHS where they were broken down into smaller groups in the sports hall and

Year 9 had a session where they were provided with first aid training including CPR, basic first aid and how to use a defibrillator. The pupils had an hour session and as I am sure you would agree learnt some amazing skills for life.

Some students visited both Solent University & University of Southampton to explore career ideas and relate these to choosing their GCSE options. They were commended on their behaviour by both institutions on the day, which reflected well for Oasis Mayfield.

Year 10 and 11 had sessions with Positively You around super speedy study skills. The students were taught how to use a mind map to revise. They all learnt a massive amount around Muhammad Ali in around 7 mins and as I am sure you saw on social media could still recall the information the following day in explicit detail.

Ask a Year 10 or Year 11 what they can recall from this mind map and what it means to them – you will be amazed!

Work Experience

Year 10 are currently seeking work experience placements, with this looming over them in July. The dates for this are 3rd -7th July and students are either applying through the EBP South website or taking the initiative to organise something relevant to them. This will be a big step to understanding the world of work and the summer newsletter will have an opportunity for some student reflection on this experience. Any questions around this please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs Rance jan.rance@oasismayfield.org

A group of 4 of our students have been working with the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust on an AQA Unlocking Potential Programme with their athlete mentor. They have been lucky enough to work with Sarah Ayton OBE who is a multiple gold medal winning Olympian in sailing. They are beginning the steps to develop a social action project around kindness with more details to follow. These students have identified how best to support their peers and I look froward to providing you with an update in the future.

Students from the academy were also involved in some careers visits with a trip for Year 9 to Solent and Southampton Universities to explore options and Year 10 students from Computer Science and Science were invited on an Ocean Infinity trip where students had a tour of the Ocean Infinity centre and talk from some of the senior staff around their own personal career journey before being shown the control room and shown how they remotely control boats from the main site.

A group of Year 10 students have been attending mentoring sessions organised through University of Oxford with two graduates, Dr Julia Nightingale and Dr Alissa Gutnikova; being made to think incredibly hard and develop strong reflective skills through their regular sessions.

2 Year 10 students accompanied by Mrs Rance, our Careers Adviser, were lucky enough to have access to an aircraft carrier and below is the experience described by one of the students along with a few photos.

‘We had the excellent opportunity to go and see the HMS Queen Elizabeth in the naval port in Portsmouth. It has definitely been an opportunity we will never forget. Seeing behind the scenes of what Navy life is like when out at sea. For me, the whole experience was one of a kind, with learning new information about the navy and seeing where they all work. On the day we saw places such as the fight deck, the bridge where the warfare officers are based, engineering, hospital and where the planes are stored. This opportunity has definitely inspired me to go in the navy as a career and has shown me what qualities and skills you need to be in the Navy’

Another busy term to come. If you have any thoughts around careers opportunities you would like us to offer please contact Mr Pearce: neil.pearce@oasismayfield.org

Please also get in touch if you, your business or employer can offer any opportunities to our young people with regards to careers and work experience. I look forward to hearing from you.

Mr Pearce and Mrs Rance

Sports Roundup

Our curriculum offer has been enhanced with the Astro now being used in PE lessons. Most students have had the opportunity to use this fantastic facility during lesson time and it has been great to see how excited and respectful students have been to using it.

Year 7 – 9

Students have had the opportunity to participate in a range of sports and physical activities this term, including football, rugby, netball, hockey, gym, dance, fitness, basketball, badminton, OAA, team building and Ultimate Frisbee. Alongside developing their competence in sports/physical activities, students have worked on developing their teamwork, communication, leadership and tactical understanding.

Year 10 – 11 Core PE

In Year 10 and 11 students are given the choice of sports and physical activities to participate in and most students have really enjoyed this. So far, we have offered the following additional activities alongside those that they will have experienced in Y7-9: Pilates, Kick Boxing, Just Dance and Volleyball.

Year 10 BTEC Tech Award in Performing Arts Dance

The Performing Arts Dance students have been working extremely hard on their component 1 assessment. For this student have been studying different dance practitioners exploring their work and gaining an understand of the requirements to create a professional piece of dance. They have all produced a written piece of work along with performing the dance empowerment from Emancipation of Expressionism. All students have focused on skills and techniques throughout working on component 1 and as a result have improved their confidence, performance skills and teamwork.

I would like to say a massive well done to everyone for all your hard work, dedication, and commitment to the course. I’m looking forwards to seeing you develop throughout component 2 specialising in your own styles of dance. Keep up the good work!

Year 10 BTEC Tech Award in Sport

Our Year 10 BTEC Sport students have completed Component 1 this term, in which they have had to complete controlled assessments in response to a Pearson set case-study. They have had to produce a written report about recommended activities and barriers to sporting participation, a PowerPoint presentation with details about the Clothing, Footwear, Equipment and Technology in Sport, a written warm-up plan and justification that they have delivered practically to their peers.

Year 11 BTEC First Award in Sport

The Year 11 cohort are coming towards the end of the course, with the final assignment being Unit 5: The Sports Performer in Action. In this unit students must create two presentations demonstrating their knowledge of the musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory and energy systems, the impact of exercise on each as well as the differences between sports/physical activities.

Extracurricular

Football

The football season returned after February half term with the final few league games being played and the start of the cup competition.

Our Year 7 boys team have had a solid season in Division 1 and they should be proud of their success in their first year at Mayfield. The Year 8 boys’ team have had a tough season so far having been promoted to Division 1 after last year. Mr Miller has been incredibly impressed with the efforts and determination of the squad and will be looking to build on the progress made next season. The Year 9 boys made a great start to the cup winning 6-1 against Cantell. They are into the semi-final where they will face Wildern on Wednesday 22nd March.

The Year 10 boys are 3rd in Division 1 which is a great achievement. The Year 11 boys will have three fixtures in the last two weeks of term, so keep an eye out for how they get on!

The U13 Girls have had a great season currently sitting in 3rd with 1 game left to play. They have improved massively, working as a team, and scoring lots of goals. We have had a high number of girls take part and it has been a pleasure to watch them all love playing Football. Whilst our U16 Girls team have gone from strength to strength with a number of new recruits this season in Year 9, plus several Year 11s playing their last games for Mayfield.

Netball

This term it has been the Year 7 and Year 8s turn to represent the academy in the Southampton School’s Netball League at Redbridge school. The Netball team have been working hard and have played multiple schools within the U12 and U13 Netball league. Both teams have been extremely committed to training and have shown progress throughout the fixtures. I would like to say a special well done to Aricha Roberts (Year 8) and Jesse Wolf (Year 7) For being nominated for woman of the match from the opposing teams.

U12: Kara, Georgia, Lily, Karmen, Isabelle, Emma, Diaz, Jesse, Jenna, Lucie.

U13: Erin, Aricha, Luke, Grace, Millie, Leighah, Lucas, Summer, Rebecca, Eden, Evelyn.

Thank you to everyone who has attend training. It has been great to see your enjoyment and passion for netball, we hope that you continue to practice your skills and join again next year!

Basketball

Basketball club has continued to be in full swing this term, we have continued with great numbers, and it has been lovely to see lots of new faces joining the club. All students having been having lots of fun developing their skills and knowledge of the sport and this can be seen in some improved performances in their school matches. Some of our Year 10 students decided that with their new and developed skills that they now had what they needed to challenge the PE staff to a game, unfortunately for the students age and wisdom prevailed with the staff taking the win. Not happy with this result the students want a rematch later and I’m sure once the staff have iced their knees, completed hours of stretching and got their breath back we could see this arranged.

Our under 14 basketball teams have been in league action this term. Our girls team played their first game of the season narrowly losing out to Cantell in a fiercely contested game, all member of the team put in some brilliant performances showing that their hard work in training has been paying off. Our boys continued their league campaign but after a valiant effort and some great individual performances they fell just short in each of their final fixtures and couldn’t quite come away with the win they were seeking.

As the basketball season comes to an end the PE team would like to say a huge well done to all students that have been involved this year, whether you have represented the school in matches or just come along to training to improve your skills and enjoy the sport. We hope to see you back again next year!

Dodgeball

Dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge! Our Year 7 & 8 Dodgeball players did Mayfield proud at the Southampton Schools Tournament. The girl’s came 4th in the city and the boy’s 2nd! Well done to Iarina, Weronika, Lily, Freyja, Isobelle & Jesse and Will, Cairo, Dylan, Josh, Filip & Lucas.

New Club – Multi-Skills!

Our new Saints Community Champion Jai has started a new Multi-Skills club in the sports hall on a Tuesday between 3-4pm. Students will have the opportunity to choose the sports that they wish to participate in, e.g. dodgeball, endball, volleyball, futsal etc.

Calshot

This term our Year 10s had the opportunity to visit Calshot Activities Centre to experience some of the Outdoor Adventurous Activities that they had been studying in BTEC (Tech) Sport. The Year 10s thoroughly enjoyed participating in rock-climbing, track cycling and skiing. The staff at Calshot Activities Centre were very impressed with the Year 10s and complimented the group for their effort and determination throughout the day.

Keep an eye out for our Summer Term Extracurricular Calendar and fixtures for Rounders, Cricket and Athletics!

Events

Grease The Musical is coming to Mayfield

The cast and crew have been rehearsing tirelessly since September to perfect the show which will be performed in the school theatre during the final three days of the term. This is the first whole school production at OA Mayfield for a long time and the excitement for the show is increasing with each week. As you can see from the photos, the rehearsals are going well. There are still a limited number of tickets available, if you would like to purchase them, please do so via the MCAS app.

Premier League Inspire Project

The group of 5 Oasis Academy Mayfield students spent several weeks putting together a brilliant project to reduce the amount of single use plastics discarded into landfill. They named themselves the OAM Bottleheads and designed green houses, recycling bins and bird feeders, all to be made from plastic bottles collected from their school, St Marys stadium and the Staplewood training ground. Using their creations, they aim to provide their school and Staplewood with locally grown produce to be consumed be students, staff, and player; bins to increase recycling; and finally, bird feeders to encourage wildlife too. They did incredibly well to win the votes of the judges and secure success, being the team chosen to carry their projects forward.

Oasis Real Talk

‘Oasis Real Talk’ is a pupil led radio show that broadcasts on a Thursday between 2pm and 3pm across the south. We go live to an audience across Southampton. Your family can hear you live at that time on the radio, or they can download a podcast from the Unity 101 radio website to listen later.

We teach journalistic research, how to design a feature for the radio show, how to present and use microphones, carry links from one feature to another and how to speak as a professional on air. We teach the technical aspects of producing a show and running your own team.

Students learn how to deliver the weather, the traffic and be creative with their own features and interests.

The club is on a Tuesday from 3pm until 3.45pm and we are a friendly and funny team. Everyone is welcome! We have pupils who train other students to use the equipment and make play lists that reflect their choice and love of music.

Pop along to see us if you are interested in learning these unique skills. We already have one pupil who is pursuing a career in radio and has a show in college. This could be the beginning of your big break into the show biz world!

Give it a try you might discover skills you never knew you had!

Community Hub

March 26th saw the Hub team marking the one-year anniversary of the pantry. When we first opened, we planned to support between 25 & 50 family’s. A year on we now have a membership of 140 & receive requests for support daily. As we celebrate the pantry's one-year anniversary, we are reminded of the importance of community and the power of coming together to support one another. We are grateful for all who have made this pantry possible, for the volunteers, companies, organisations and individuals who have donated time, produce, resources and funding. A huge thank you to ‘Team Mayfield’ for all your support.

Prom Dress Project

The Hub Team has reason to celebrate as they recently enjoyed not just one, but two successful Prom dress hire events, which offered students from across Southampton a chance to find their perfect dress for just £20. The events were organized with the aim of providing affordable options for prom-goers, we are incredibly grateful to all who have donated dresses and with over 150 to choose from the response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. A further event will be held after Easter.
