First grade students read the book "Baby Bird" by Andrew Gibbs and illustrated by Zosienka. The book features a baby bird that was born with one small wing and unable to fly like his siblings. He meets a new friend named Conner that shows him that just because he is different doesn't mean that he can't accomplish great things. Students created their own bird families and bird houses.

Second grade students read the book "Leo the Late Bloomer" by Robert Kraus and illustrated by Jose Aruego. This is a story about Leo, a tiger who has not "bloomed" as fast as his classmates. Students created symmetrical tiger faces that were inspired by Aruego's Leo.
