Coco Hotel book a room - plant a tree

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A TREE MAKES

November 9, 2022 . . . Coco Hotel wants to make a positive difference in the world. That is why we donate trees on behalf of our guests, through our partner Eden Reforestation Projects. At more than 45 different project sites in Kenya, we support the produce, planting, growing and protecting of trees, for the benefit of the climate, the environment and the local communities.

When you book your stay through Coco Hotel's website, we donate one tree per night for your stay to Eden Projects. This means that by choosing to book directly with Coco hotel, you can CO2 neutral your stay, while supporting local communities around Kenya and creating a positive impact on the wildlife and ecosystem in the project areas.

Over 90% of Kenya has been deforested. The dangerous combination of logging, charcoal burning and illegal settling will only accelerate forest loss.

With your help, Coco expects to donate more than 33.000 trees within the first year of partnership with Eden Reforestation Projects.

To this date, Eden Reforestation Projects has planted and protected over 50 million trees in Kenya and employs more than 1050 people with fair wages at the project sites. To learn more about Eden's work, please visit their website www.edenprojects.org.

"When a guest books a room on Coco’s website, a tree is donated on their behalf. The stay becomes CO2 neutral as a tree absorbs around 1 ton of CO2 during its lifetime," says Christian Lytje, Founder of Cofoco. "We are pleased to support Eden Projects for their great work in Kenya and other countries around the globe."

Eden Projects

Located on the eastern coast of Africa, Kenya is a country famous for its diverse wildlife and wide range of forest types that have long supported its communities. However, in recent decades these forests have experienced extreme environmental degradation. Human activities such as logging, charcoal burning, and illegal settling to create farmland are significant factors of deforestation. This has caused an increase in severe drought and extreme poverty. As a result, Kenya has committed to its reforestation, specifically looking to achieve a 10% forest cover, and we are working closely with the government to help accomplish these commitments.

In late 2019, Eden Projects started working with the local community, a local forest trust, and regional and national government institutions to establish our office, planting sites, and nurseries. Through their relentless determination to plant trees in Kenya and protect its forest system despite a global pandemic, planting began in March 2020. In that first month, our employees planted over 50,000 trees and since then have continued to increase their planting rate in the Kijabe Forest and along the Northern Coast.

Eden's Progress to Date

By rapidly scaling their teams and tree planting operations, Eden now has the largest, most efficient reforestation organization in Kenya. With 45 project sites across the country, they are re-establishing a sustainable water supply through protecting and replanting around springs and rivers, restoring critical habitat for wildlife, stabilizing steep slopes prone to landslides, and securing livelihoods.
