Students Host Give Back Day By: Marlee Sorrells

Students participated in a community wide Give Back Day hosted by Project SOAR and Chik Fil A on April 15. Fourteen students led the event and 209 total students volunteered to fulfill 12 different projects.

“My favorite part was seeing all the students working together for others’ benefit,” sponsor Jennifer King said.

The Chick-fil-A Leader Academy students were tasked with creating a “Spring Impact Project” that would benefit their community. They chose to have high school students serve through many different projects to have the widest impact.

“I’m really happy with how the event turned out,” junior Gwendolyn May said. “We got to help a lot of different people in a lot of different ways because of the number of students that decided to come.”

Students volunteered to get hours for NHS and the TJC Promise. Groups that participated were football, golf, tennis, NHS, cheerleading, culinary, FFA, yearbook and newspaper, soccer, student council, basketball, Key Club, and FCA.

“I was really excited to help out with my team,” junior Lauren Van Andel said. “We had a lot of fun together and it’s always a great day to help people.”

Volunteers received a free Chick-fil-A lunch after they finished their projects. Project SOAR plans to continue this volunteer day annually.

“I hope that we get to continue this event each year,” May said. “It was great to be a part of something impacting so many community members in a positive way.”
