Sing and Dance

Through the waters of Baptism, we can sing, "It is well with my soul."

Scripture: Mark 1:4-11 CSB

John came baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. John wore a camel-hair garment with a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey.

He proclaimed, “One who is more powerful than I am is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the strap of his sandals. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. As soon as he came up out of the water, he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well-pleased.”

Talk

How might these Bible verses connect to the highs and lows you shared? Who was present at Jesus' baptism? How does Jesus' baptism show how special He is? In what ways does Jesus' baptism remind you of the baptisms you've seen in church? How does Jesus show us we are beloved?

Engage

In baptism, with water and God's Word, our sins our forgiven, and Jesus calls us by name and welcomes us into His family.

Print and color!

Family Activity (make sure an adult is present)

Baptism Object Lesson: You'll need a clear glass of water, food coloring and a cup of bleach. Baptism makes us clean. When we are clean, we feel good and happy inside. The glass of water represents us. When we make mistakes (sin) it makes us not feel good inside. Add a drop of food coloring into the water and stir it around. However, when we are baptized, we are made completely clean! Our sins are forgiven. Pour the bleach into the glass and wait a minute for it to become clear.

Pray + Bless

Dear Jesus, In baptism, You make us Yours with a splash of water and a loving Word. Thank You for Your promise of forgiveness to us and for calling us Your children. Amen.

Make the sign of the cross with water on the forehead of each person in your family and say, "Jesus said, 'I have called you by name. You are mine."" Remember your baptisms.
