Great Depression

Schools and factories were shut down. People who had put their money in banks lost everything.

Families were struggling to survive. Women became the unsung heroes of the family

Women had to work and keep the house clean

Women's roles vs Men's Roles

Men

Worked to support family
Superior and more educated

Women

Less educated
Many had to work as well as do housework
Low paying jobs and poor treatment
African American were hit the worst

Men contribute to oppression

Most times, men suffered pay cuts but women were completely unemployed.

Women could be scorned for going after good jobs, so their income was remarkably lower.

Women were reduced to maids and schoolteachers.

Evolution of gender roles

“Aunt Alexandra was fanatical on the subject of my attire. I could not possibly be a lady if I wore breeches; when I said I could do nothing in a dress, she said I wasn't suppose to do anything that required pants.” (108).

Our nation has overcome many of its historic gender roles and bias, however as a nation we still struggle for true gender equality.

While we may seem like the forefront of many things, the US is not the leading country in gender equality. However, there are many more countries with more existing bias than in the US
