Sustainable Futures Seminar Series 10th February 2022

On Thursday 10th February, the second event in the Sustainable Futures Seminars Series took place on Zoom. We were joined by our guest speakers Professor Richard Kingston and Joe Ravetz from the University of Manchester. The event was chaired by the Sustainable Futures Net- Zero futures challenge lead, Kate Scott, who also opened the event and introduced our guest speakers.

During the first presentation of the session, Richard Kingston, Professor of Urban Planning and GISc, Faculty of Humanities, Manchester Urban Institute & Manchester Environmental Research Institute at the University of Manchester, presented on “The NERC Digital Solutions Hub”. He explained that the NERC Digital Solutions programme is developing a digital Hub and a set of toolkits that exploit environmental and other data (social, economic and health) to create innovative digital services that deliver economic, societal and environmental benefits across the UK. Richard also discussed the functions of the Hub and answered questions from the audience. For those wishing to get in touch with Richard, you can do so via email - richard.kingston@manchester.ac.uk

Joe Ravetz, Research Fellow, Faculty of Humanities, Manchester Urban Institute at The University of Manchester presented next on the topic of “Beyond COP26 - tools for a ‘collective climatic intelligence’”. Joe explored the Climate–Wise Toolkit, a method of analysis, first for analysis and mapping of social, political and cultural dynamics in different regions, or the syndromes of corruption and inequality. Then it was developed for a systematic exploration of viable pathways, which can turn targets into actions and how it could offer a realistic and credible way to:

  1. get other governments to commit
  2. turn such promises into action

The toolkit is expected to be taken to the COP27. Joe Ravetz ended his presentation by answering questions from the audience. For those wishing to get in touch with Joe, you can do so via email - joe.ravetz@manchester.ac.uk
