SGI Swim Team Starts Season with a Storm

By: Austin Yetter

The SGI Varsity Boys Swim Team has started this season with a storm. Led by Coach Ryan Dygert and assisted by Coach Kay Piatak as well as captains Austin Yetter and Connor Hughey, the team has won all four of the early divisional meets. The Griffins look to defend their title as division champions and are off to a great start to do so. The second half of their schedule has some tough opponents such as Williamsville East, Hamburg, or East Aurora, but these are non-divisional and do not count towards their standings.

The Griffins’ first meet was November 30th against Pioneer at Springville’s pool. The team had 11 first place finishes along with 3 second and 5 third place finishes. Austin Yetter, Christian Safford, and Justin Buczek each earned 2 individual wins as well as being part of 2 winning relays each. Garrett Casey won the 100 backstroke and had a second place finish in the 50 freestyle to go along with it. All three A-relays won with Connor Hughey as a key member in each. The Griffins won the meet by a score of 64-36.

The Griffins traveled to Tonawanda a week later and saw similar success. They had 10 first place finishes, a tie for first, 3 second and 5 third place finishes. Austin Yetter, Christian Safford, and Garrett Casey each had 2 wins, and Asa Cerasani had a win and a second place finish. The oddity in this meet was a tie in the 100 backstroke. Both Garrett Casey from Springville and Simon Mysliwy from Tonawanda finished with a time of 1:09.06, each earning 3.5 points (instead of the traditional 4 for first and 3 for second) and a place at the Class C Championship later in the year. This meet, the score ended 63.5-36.5 with the Griffins winning.

A few days later Holland traveled to Springville where the Griffins won their 3rd consecutive meet on Friday the 10th. The Griffins won 10 of the events and had 9 second and 2 third place finishes. Austin Yetter and Connor Hughey each won two races, and both Christian Safford and Justin Buczek had a win and a second place finish. An addition to this meet was diving by Finn Martin, the Griffins’ new diver. He saw success in his 4 dives and will look to complete the required 6 dives to score against Alden on Tuesday the 14th. The Griffins had a distinct victory with a score of 75-12.

Major progress towards a consecutive division title was reached with a win against the rival Alden Bulldogs on Tuesday the 14th. Austin Yetter and Justin Buczek each won two races with Christian Safford also taking a win and a second place. The underdog Griffins had many key finishes: Austin Yetter won the 50 freestyle and 100 fly despite being seeded second in each, Justin Buczek and Finn Martin came in first and second in diving earning 7 points for the team, Bryce Cook took an imperative second place in the 500 freestyle to pair with Christian Safford’s win, and Justin Buczek won a close 100 breastroke race with Asa Cerasani taking third. The medley relay also dropped 5 seconds off of their time to start the meet with an unpredicted win along with the disqualification of Alden’s B relay to give the Griffins a third place point as well. The score was tight, but the Griffins came out on top by a score of 53-48.

The Griffins are now the clear leaders in ECIC Division 4 with a 4-0 record. Alden was the biggest competition in this division, but the Griffins were able to come out on top. The remainder of their divisional schedule contains meets against Depew and Cleveland Hill, both teams that the Griffins should be able to win against. With the perfect 4-0 record to start the season, the Griffins are now favored to win the division title for the second season in a row and for the 3rd time in 4 seasons. This is a dynamic team of young men who are sure to put on a show each time they enter the water. The remaining home meets for anyone to spectate are January 11th against Hamburg and the senior meet against St. Francis on January 18th

Deadly Gas Tanker Explodes

By: Jamie Bradford

On December 13th 2021, A gas tanker in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti exploded because of a car crash and it resulted in destruction and death; 59 people have been pronounced dead so far. The city’s deputy mayor Partrick Almonor extended an appeal for blood donations. Dozens of people are in hospitals around the city. The blood donations are needed heavily, Almonor called the situation “critical”. At Least 50 houses are damaged heavily from the fire, and almost all of them will need to be demolished. Almonor also said "The city will need a lot of help to come out of this tragedy, the central government is offering to help but we are waiting to see it. We believe we will need more than just the central government, the situation is critical."Haiti's Prime Minister Ariel Henry reacted to the tragedy on Tuesday morning on twitter, tweeting: "I learned, with desolation and emotion, the sad news of the explosion, last night, in Cap-Haitien, of a tanker truck transporting gasoline, and which caused, according to a partial report, about forty dead, dozens injured, as well as extensive material damage."

Local officials say rescue efforts are ongoing and that the death toll is expected to rise. The prime minister later declared three days of national mourning in the wake of the explosion, "in memory of the victims of this tragedy which grieves the entire Haitian nation." This explosion is a tragedy, I hope the victims' families get through this tough time and that the injured are healed soon. Hopefully more people are able to donate blood to the people in need.

Get Back

By: Lili Quinn

On Friday November 25th, part of music history was reimagined as Get Back, a documentary series about The Beatles directed and produced by Peter Jackson was released on Disney+. As a huge Beatles fan myself, I have to say that this docuseries is a must see for beatlemaniacs of all ages. The revised film and sound quality make it feel as if The Fab Four are right there next to you rehearsing in the living room.

This isn’t the first documentary about the making of the now iconic Let it Be album. Back in 1970 when the album was first released, an official documentary by the album’s same name was released. Although there are many bootleg versions that have been uploaded to the internet over the past ten to fifteen years or so, the original film can be difficult to find at times due to both its age and the fact that the original movie was not particularly loved by the band to say the least. I can remember watching the original Let it Be movie myself a few years ago and thinking that it was a very one-sided point of view of the band. Even in the very late sixties/early seventies most friends, family, press and fans of the band knew that tension and stress was at an all time high between the four of them. Let it Be was seen as The Beatles breakup album, and the 1970 film looked like it was the final nail in the coffin of an era for the fans and their beloved lads from Liverpool.

Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, their families, and the family members of George Harrison and John Lennon attended the premiere of Get Back. After seeing part one of the docuseries, Paul McCartney was a bit emotional when giving his thoughts on the movie. McCartney stated

“I felt as if I got to see my friends again”. The friends he was speaking of were John Lennon who was tragically killed in 1980, George Harrison who died of cancer in 2001, and his beloved wife Linda McCartney who passed in 1997 due to cancer.

The film has been extremely moving to not only the fans, but also to The Beatles themselves. During a recent interview with The Sunday Times McCartney explained that the documentary even changed his own perception of the band's split. When asked if the movie had changed his point of view, McCartney replied with:

“Really yes. And there is proof in the footage. Because I definitely bought into the dark side of The Beatles breaking up and thought, ‘God, I’m to blame”. “It’s easy when the climate is going that way, to think that. But at the back of my mind there was this idea that it wasn’t like that. I just needed to see proof.”

In the very same interview, Paul also claims that he believes that The Beatles could have stayed together.

While watching the film, fans have found out things about the legendary group that we might not have known had it not been for this movie. For example, when George Harrison decides to just leave the band one day and lets John, Paul and Ringo know by leaving a note that says

“See you all ‘round the clubs”.

In conclusion, I would recommend this series to not only Beatles fans, but to everyone regardless of what type of music you prefer. It is quite possibly the most insightful film in music history, made about the most influential band in music history.

Russia and Ukraine Conflict

By: Alyssa Koehler

Recently there has been an increase of concern for the border between Russia and Ukraine due to a sudden russian troop buildup. This buildup raised concerns with NATO and Ukraine, since Pulin has already shown interest in regaining the area due to its natural border that was lost when the Soviet Union was eradicated. Putin has remarked on how he believed NATO should not be involved in what he does within Russia, and has been speaking with higher-ups in China for security of the east.

When it comes to the history of Ukraine and Russia, they were both separated after the Soviet Union was forced to disband, leading to Russia losing their previous natural border with the mountains. Also due to this many families were separated, similar to The Civil War within the US. Because of this many citizens of Ukraine would not mind Russian rule for that reason alone. Russia would also provide protection to civilians, which is appealing to many citizens especially since Ukraine isn't as built military wise compared to other countries. However, NATO does not want this merger to happen since it would give Russia their land border, giving them more protection in the event of a war or battle. IT would allow Russia to grow in power, making Russia a larger threat to NATO.

NATO has responded by putting a bill in effect active in 2022, which would increase troop exercises within Ukraine, using mainly American troops to aid their 255,000 active personnel for when Russia decides to attack. Putin has spoken with Boris Johnson about the American and British involvement with Ukraine, saying "It was underlined that all this is happening against the background of active military 'expansion' on the territory of Ukraine by NATO countries creating a direct threat to the security of Russia," in response Johnson was reiterated the importance of working through diplomatic channels to de-escalate tensions and identify durable solutions. In the days after this discussion Putin later threatened Britain with the usage of nuclear missiles due to the previously mentioned bill that would station NATO troops in Ukraine.

Putin is hesitant to take explosive measures, but seems to be willing to take them if NATO continues to interfere with his military decisions, and Ukraine. His reasoning for NATO not being involved with Ukraine is due to a statement made by NATO (not written) when the territory was split, where the leaders at the time promised to not interfere or try to get Ukraine to join NATO. He is also concerned with the importance given on where his troops are stationed, where even though it seems like he is ready to attack Ukraine, he believes he should be able to put troops anywhere within his territory without interference. Due to this he is put in immediate conflict with NATO who wants the independence of Ukraine, so Putin has now turned to China’s high-ups so he can ensure the safety and independence of both Russia and China. This has further threatened NATO, since both Russia and China are often butting heads, but are now working together to protect their own interests.

Overall, NATO is trying to both protect themselves and Ukraine from attacks coming from Russia, but are concerned with their own safety due to threats of nuclear missiles on citizen occupied towns. These threats are mostly meant for Britain, but apply to every member of NATO since they have all been responsible for their activities within Ukraine. Currently NATO is struggling with the responsibilities of keeping their territories secure, while also keeping Ukraine independent, especially with the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO is Russia losses in their takeover that may occur.

The Downfall of Malls

By: Braeden Raiber

For many years, shopping malls were many people’s favorite place to go when they had downtime. In 2021 however, many shopping malls and department stores are on the brink of collapse. The main cause of this downfall is debatable, but most agree that the introduction of online shopping is the most obvious reason as to why many shopping centers across the country have been steadily losing popularity for over a decade.

Throughout the 20th century and the early 2000’s shopping malls played a large role in defining the most popular trends in the country. The abundance of department stores all in one building helped the middle class get a taste of luxury, as they were able to walk through a single building and encounter dozens of different name brand stores selling products at affordable prices. These shopping centers were both convenient and profitable, causing their popularity to skyrocket and many more to be built around the country. Malls are one of the biggest reasons that many consider shopping more of a social activity than anything else. They also provided jobs to millions of people, jobs that both gave many teenagers an introduction to the workforce as well as a chance for the longer tenured employees to make a career out of them with no degree necessary.

However, as the capabilities of the internet came to light at the turn of the 21st century, more and more people have begun to flock towards online shopping as an even more convenient way of buying products. It’s obvious why many would prefer this shopping experience to shopping malls, as someone can purchase just about anything online without even having to leave their house. But the effect this has taken on shopping malls has been devastating. In 2011, US department stores employed 1.2 million employees across 8,600 stores. But in 2020, there are now fewer than 700,000 employees in the sector, working across just over 6,000 locations.

At the end of the day, customers will always eventually flock towards what’s easier for them. While in-store shopping seems more beneficial as a whole with its many benefits such as social interaction, more job opportunities, etc. it is clear that online shopping is certainly more convenient to the average consumer. Whether or not shopping malls and department stores will ever be completely wiped out is unknown, but what we do know is that online shopping has remained the more popular choice for almost a decade, and a global pandemic has only made that gap in popularity wider.

Christmas History

By: Sage Novoa

Everybody knows, or has at least heard of the famous holiday… Christmas! It is celebrated on December 25 and is observed and practiced by Christians. This day marks the anniversary of the birth of Jesus in Nazareth. During this holiday, lots of gifts are exchanged, trees are decorated in tinsel with ornaments and usually a star at the top. People will attend a church service either the day before or on Christmas, a meal will be shared with family and friends, and the biggest part- waiting for Santa to bring all of your presents.

Now, you might be wondering how Christmas started. Before the arrival of Jesus, Europeans in the early time, “celebrated light and birth…”(History) during the darkest times of the winter season. Many of the people looked forward to the winter solstice which led them to look forward to the longer days of sunlight. In another place known as Scandinavia, they too celebrated the return of the sun. Sons and father would bring home large logs to set on fire and relish in the light. It would take around 12 days for the log to completely burn; the family would be hosting large feasts to gather around. The people also believed that a new pig or calf would be born in the upcoming year, with every new spark that came from the fire.

Is Christmas actually the day that Jesus was born? Unfortunately the Bible does not answer his birth date but Pope Julius 1, chose December 25th. Holding Christmas during the same time as Winter solstice festivals increased church leaders' chances that Christmas would be embraced, and it had been until it was canceled by a religious reform in the 17th century. Oliver Cromwell and his Puritan forces had taken over England and canceled their fun holiday. The story of, “anyone exhibiting the Christmas spirit was fined five shillings“(History) was told, so people didn't celebrate. It wasn't until June 26, of 1870, that Christmas was declared a federal holiday.

In the 19th century Americans began to finally embrace Christmas. During this time was a period of unemployment and rioting, which New York City’s council had instituted a police force. Certain members of the force and upper classes began to change the way that Christmas was celebrated in America. It is now a family-centered day of peace, bringing groups together to celebrate Jesus again.

Decreasing Snowfall Worldwide

By: Scott Russell

Snowfall is an important part of winter in a large part of the United States. Many people depend on snow to provide water when it melts in the spring, including millions of people in the western United States, where snowmelt provides 75 percent of the water supply. Other people may depend less on snow, however this doesn’t change the fact that statistically we are getting less of it.

The total amount of snowfall has decreased in many different parts of the country since widespread observations became available in 1930, with 57 percent of weather data stations showing a consistent decrease in the amount of snowfall. Taking into account all of the stations of which have recorded data since 1930, the average change is a decrease of 0.19 percent per year of snowfall according to the Environmental Protection Agencies website.

Changes in the types of precipitation that occur over a time period also can indicate that global warming may be a cause of the decreasing amount of snow. For example if the amount of rain in a certain area increased over time and the amount of snow decreased, a likely cause of this would be increasing temperatures in that area. Nearly 80 percent of the stations across the 48 states that collected data have experienced a decrease in the proportion of precipitation falling as snow, supporting the claim that there is a decreasing amount of snow. It is important to factor in this ratio of rain to snow to show that some years there may be more overall precipitation causing more snow, however this doesn’t accurately exemplify the big picture where this is a decreasing ratio of snow to rain.

Despite data showing a consistent majority of weather stations collecting data supporting the claim that there is decrease in the amount of snowfall, counter-arguments can easily be made by just showing a small amount of data from one specific region of which may show an increase in snowfall. This is what leads many people to be skeptical in regards to the decreasing snowfall debate. By showing an example of a common misconception, I hope it can be seen that collecting your own data and reading multiple sources on debates leads to a more informed and in turn a more efficient argument.

Magical Mullets

By: Casey Waterman

As far back as the time of the ancient Greek poet Homer, hairstyles have been a cultural symbol, a representation of one’s perceived identity, translated onto their own body. One such interpretation of style was in the form of the Mullet. The Mullet, a simple yet enormously influential expression, has been present for thousands of years, and was detailed in the famed Iliad as being worn by a group of ancient soldiers. In fact there was a clear purpose to this, historians theorize. The short style in front kept hair out of the soldiers eyes during battle, while the long flow in the back akept the soldiers neck warm and protected. The shaved sides were perfect for battle gear, as they allowed a helmet to fit on comfortably and snugly, without hair on the side getting in the way. But even thousands of years later, it’s not uncommon to find someone with a mullet simply by walking down the street. But what gives this hairstyle its longevity, it's timelessness? Other hairstyles, even ones popular in the 1970’s, like the hippie cut, have almost faded into obsolescence. Yet the ancient mullet perseveres. Why is that?

Well to start, we need to clarify what exactly a mullet is, and how its blend of professionalism and casualism synergize to make the scientifically perfect hairstyle. The mullet, in essence, is a short haircut in the front and top of the head, with the sides usually shaved or cropped very close, with the back of the hair being long and sometimes elaborately styled. This simple yet revolutionary concept takes wisdom in being versatile, and not conforming itself to any definition. Think, you could have long, elaborate and interesting hairstyles, but they don’t always convey professionalism, like with the hippie cut. Conversely, you could have a short and neat haircut, but it's widely considered more boring and plain. What the inventor of the mullet did, who is still unknown to this day, was combine these two ideals and got the best of both worlds. A classic idiom referring to the mullet accurately sums this up: Business in the front, party in the back.

And the mullet’s presence in popular culture has by no means diminished this. While always popular, it had a resurgence in the 1980’s with celebrities and civilians alike embracing the flow. This continued into the 1990’s, 2000’s and 2010 eras, showing no signs of stopping. Surprisingly though, this fashion statement didn’t have a name until it was coined by the Beastie Boys in 1994, with their hit song, Mullet head.

So overall, what is so special about the mullet? The answer is simple: everything. It’s a timeless and stylish cut, with roots in both practicality and versatility. No other haircut could have survived empires rising and falling, war and peace, and the ever changing world. From the battlefield, to 90’s rap, both warriors and the fashion-conscious alike will find some use for this herculean hairstyle. The world may move on but one thing is for sure: the mullet will always be around.

Rising Fertilizer Prices

By: Brett Blesy

Farmers consist of less than 2% of the population, however they have to feed all 100% of it. With increasing populations farmers need to become more efficient. Farmers are forced to find new ways to produce more food with less land due to rapid urbanization and residential developments. This is a problem that has been looming over the agriculture industry for several years.

The most common and traditional way to do this is by adding fertilizers to soils and crops to maximize yields. Fertilizers allow farmers to produce yields up to 150%. Fertilizer has become a key solution in agriculture to keep up with increasing demands, and farmers have begun to depend on them as they have been used in agriculture for decades. About 50% of all fertilizers used in agriculture are synthetic and a majority of the nitrogen added to crops to produce a larger and healthier plant with increased yields is also synthetic. These synthetic fertilizers are derived from gasses in the air, minerals, and inorganic waste. To produce synthetic fertilizers you need to use natural gas, which like much of everything else, has had a sharp price increase recently. This increased cost of gas and transportation for distribution has made the costs of these fertilizers sky rocket to all time highs. The prices have increased by 150%-200% since planting this spring.

These increasing fertilizer prices are causing farmers to look at how they can use less synthetic fertilizers and replace them with other products to help build their yields. One solution to use less fertilizer is Variable Rate Technology. Variable Rate Technology(VRT) uses several soil samples from each field to change the amount of fertilizer being applied depending on the need of the soils. Soil types and soil fertility changes very often throughout a field so a sample is taken every acre. This helps the farmer know the needs of the soils. Technology can then change the amount of fertilizer being applied as the tractor drives through the field so that all of the fertilizer being applied is necessary and none is being wasted. This is going to stop the overspreading of fertilizers and cut back on the overall amount of fertilizer needed.

Another option that farmers are looking at are biological stimulants that are supposed to work with microbes in the soils to increase the fertility of the soil with less synthetic fertilizers. These stimulants are able to increase the overall quality of the crops being produced. They are also able to build up the soil to increase the activity to make a healthier soil that will eventually require no added fertilizers. Although these products are fairly new, they are becoming more popular because of the added environmental benefit: a better public perception than synthetic fertilizers, and they are now cheaper than other fertilizers.

This is a topic that will affect everyone, not just farmers. In the spring the increased fertilizer prices will still hit farmers hard despite these alternatives. However, because the price of growing crops will increase, so will the price of purchasing them which will affect everyone globally.

Rocky IV

By: Liam Smith

After defeating opponent Clubber Lang in the ring, Rocky Balboa is once again heavyweight champion of the world and enjoying what may be his retirement. Balboa, his family, and former opponent but now manager, Apollo Creed, all reside in their mansion with everything they could need. All fights seem to be over for the two boxers, until a new challenger comes about. Ivan Drago, from the Soviet Union, has challenged for the title. However, this was originally going to be dismissed because of Balboa not wanting to fight. So it isn’t him who takes on the fight, but the older Apollo Creed. He feels people don’t see him as they used to, and wants to prove that he still has the fire within him. After constant arguments about whether he should do it or not, the fight is accepted by Creed. The fight takes place in the US, and for the newcomer Drago, it seems more like a show than it does a fight. With a grand entrance by Creed and music being sung, it looked as if everyone thought Drago didn’t stand a chance. That the young Apollo Creed was back, the former heavyweight champion of the world has returned. But right when the fight starts, it is evident who the superior fighter is. Creed's older and slower body is no match for the speed and power behind the six-foot-four Drago. The fight does not last long at all, and towards the end Creed is taking devastating blows, one after another. Balboa in the corner tries to forfeit the fight by throwing in the towel, but refrains, resulting in Creed's death in the ring. Drago, with little to no regret of what just happened, now wants to box Balboa. Against his wife's(Adrian) wish, Balboa accepts the fight to avenge his fallen friend and America as a whole. While Drago trains for the fight in high-tech facilities, Balboa and Creed’s former manager, Duke, travel to the snowy U.S.S.R. countryside, where the fight will also take place. It is finally time for the match and after 15 rounds of taking constant hits, Balboa refuses to go down, finally defeating the powerful Soviet. Keeping the heavyweight champion title to himself, and claiming victory for not only himself, but the deceased Apollo Creed.

Beijing Olympic Boycotts

By: Damian Rideout

A round of Beijing Protests and Boycotts sparked in reaction to Communist China’s ongoing acts of genocide towards ethnic and religious minorities in Xinjiang and other crimes against humanity. China and the rising power of such is seen as an important human rights issue and a significant threat to our country. Citing a population of 1.4 Billion and a GDP of 14.7 Trillion and their ongoing hostility towards this country and our allies as too just a few reasons why. Unfortunately, important politicians representing this country such as (D) Joe Biden and his cabinet seem to think differently. With (D) Joe Biden not pressuring companies to boycott the Beijing Olympics shortly after they pushed a potential $100 Million or more worth of advertising from companies away from an MLB game in Atlanta because of a state GOP Bill. The GOP Bill causing the boycott was controversial, however influential members of the GOP have taken to the cameras vocalizing their belief that this Bill is not as bad as China’s genocide of millions of people. People like Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), who slammed major companies for ignoring the genocide in China and called on them to push for the games to be removed out of Beijing. Penning a letter to the companies financially endorsing Genocide (Airbnb, Alibaba, Allianz, Atos, Bridgestone, Coca-Cola, Intel, NBC, Omega, Panasonic, Procter & Gamble, Toyota, Samsung, and Visa) demanding mainly 3 things. 1) That they acknowledge the ongoing genocide Xinjiang Uygher Autonomus region. 2) That they call on the International Olympics Committee (IOC) to move XXIV(24th) winter olympic games out of China like they just did with Japan in April of this year for the XXXII(32nd) summer olympic games; even if this requires a postponement. And 3) that they pull all of their advertising dollars from the Olympic Games if they continue to be held in Beijing. Honorable mentions of people that endorsed Senator Marco Rubio’s (R-FL) letter against Genocide include Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) just to name a few.

In conclusion,

“Taking a stand against genocide is a moral decision, not a political one. The world is watching and your credibility is on the line, but so too are the lives of millions.”

- Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL)

Spanish Island’s Never Ending Volcano

By: Shay Travis

A volcano in Spain’s Canary Islands, La Palma, started spewing lava on September 19th. The Canary Islands is a hotspot for Europeons because of the warm weather. They are located just off of Africa's Northwest coast.

The eruption destroyed almost 3,000 buildings and forced thousands of people to leave their homes. Even throughout all of the eruptions there was no one injured and no deaths resulting from the volcano. The volcano has been surging since September 19th, it has been eighty-five days. This volcano eruption has been put on record as one of La Palma’s longest eruptions. There are no signs of this volcano ending.

On Sunday after several days of low level activity from the volcano but then suddenly there started having high activity again. Scientists say that this volcano is unpredictable. Initially they said the volcano eruption would only last for 3 months.

Mariano Hernandez, the island’s government official, described the volcano as “stable” recently but scientists wont say whether the eruptions are going to end anytime soon. In two days there were twenty-five earthquakes on La Palma but they were so little that none of the citizens felt them.

Most of the areas surrounding the volcano are covered in rivers of lava, which has dumped molten lava into farmlands and the sea. Most of life on the La Palma has continued as normal besides the section it was hit hardest, the southwest part of the island.
