Career and Technical Education (CTE) prepares all students for high-skill, high-wage, or in-demand careers. The experience begins with career inspiration in Pre-K, awareness in elementary school, exploration in middle school, and preparation in high school. CTE equips students for post-secondary education and immediate employment opportunities to compete worldwide successfully.

The New CTE Executive Director!

Dr. Holly Pore, CTE Executive Director

Guilford County Schools announces Dr. Holly Pore as the new Executive Director of Career and Technical Education. She is a native of Greensboro, graduating from Western Guilford High School. Dr. Pore is an accomplished educator rounding off 18 years of service as a CTE teacher, Curriculum and Instructional Management Coordinator, and CTE Director. As an esteemed educator, she was Teacher of the Year, National Boards Teacher Certification recipient, and the SW Regional CIMC of the Year. As CTE Director of Rowan-Salisbury Schools, Dr. Pore led the district to the Top 10 in student industry-recognized credentials earned by students for two consecutive years. She created a state-registered pre-apprenticeship/apprenticeship program wherein a pre-apprentice from the program received the ApprenticeshipNC Outstanding Registered Pre-Apprentice 2022 Award. She is a strong instructional leader and labors to empower students through career exposure, career exploration, and authentic career experiences. Dr. Pore earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management and Marketing from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Supervision, and a Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership-Superintendency, both from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Signature Career Academies (SCA) VIP Symposium, "Reimagine the Talent Pipeline"

CTE is excited to celebrate the Vision, Innovation, and Progress of our first SCA student cohorts, as we “Reimagine the Talent Pipeline”! The second SCA V.I.P. Symposium will display our students' knowledge, skills, and abilities at Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) on May 4th. This will be an engaging experience that will provide career exploration to ignite ways that our Signature Career Academies can enhance partnerships with business/ industry and allow students to display industry skills to receive work-based learning opportunities.

Builder's Vibe Community Night Out #2

The second iteration of the Builder's Vibe Community Night Out will be an immersive showcase of the development and growth of Guilford County Schools (GCS) Pre-Apprenticeship Students who are a part of the Fannie Mae Safer Together Green Housing Project. In partnership with Career & Technical Education (CTE), the Fannie Mae Safer Together Green Housing Project addresses the affordable housing crisis within the Guilford County community. In North Carolina, over 1 million households use more than 1/3 of their income to pay for their housing. GCS' CTE Carpentry Pathway students engage, innovate, and rebuild affordable single-family homes, earn $15.00 per hour, gain technical skills, credentials, professional mentors, and more! This vibe is for students, families, business/industry, and post-secondary exhibitors with interactive demonstrations, food, music, and raffle prizes - May 11th from 5-7:30 PM at the Colonnade at Revolution Mill in Greensboro, NC. Northwest High School Expands the Certified Nursing Assistant Talent Pipeline!

Join us in congratulating our newest Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). CTE Healthcare Professional Pathway students are very excited to have earned their first professional certification. This is the beginning of a journey with endless career path options within the healthcare field. The North Carolina State Evaluator spoke very highly of our CTE students and commended them on their maturity, knowledge, and confidence. The CTE students made Northwest Guilford High School, their CTE instructor, Angela Hamilton, and Guilford County Schools Career & Technical Education Department proud! We look forward to hearing how their newly earned certification positions them for high-skill, high-wage, and in-demand careers!

CTE Carpentry Pathway Students Use Their Skills for Community Advocacy

Jackson Middle School Technology Student Association (TSA) Wins Big!

Congratulations to the Jackson Middle School (JMS) Technology Student Association (TSA) team and their advisor Dr. Thomasina Hayes, who competed at the North Carolina TSA Conference this month as a new chapter and did a phenomenal job! The Jackson Middle School team was awarded a total of 16 plaques and a trophy for "New Chapter of the Year." They received six (6) First-Place plaques, seven (7) Second-Place plaques, and three (3) Third-Place plaques (see the categories below). Twenty students from the JMS TSA team will be representing Guilford County Schools and Jackson Middle School at this year's National TSA Conference in Dallas, Texas.

Kearns Academy Students Compete at the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Conference

Nathan King placed sixth in the Cyber Security competition. Cayden Neal placed first in the Help Desk competition.

Awesome things are happening for Kearns Academy of Computer and Information Science students! Three students participated in the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) State Leadership Conference. Marijose Fernandez-Bello participated in the Healthcare Administration competitive event. Nathan King placed sixth in the Cyber Security competition. Cayden Neal placed 1st in the Help Desk competition. Cayden Neal was also recognized by the National Center for Women in Information Technology (NCWIT) for the Aspirations in Computing Affiliate Award for her ongoing and future work in information technology. Lastly, Cayden serves on the Student Advisory Group for The Innovation Project (TIP): High-Tech Learning Accelerator (HTLA) along with Aleksander Banovic-Garcia from Western High School’s Signature Career Academy of Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics.

Southern Guilford Future Farmers of America (FFA) Competes at the NC Dairy Evaluation Competition

Students from the Southern Guilford High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) Chapter competed at the North Carolina Dairy Evaluation Competition and the North Carolina Dairy Handlers Competition. The SGFFA Dairy Evaluation team placed 11th out of 50 teams in the state. The team consisted of SGFFA members Kaley Boyd, Abigail Hanes, Tre' Niya Miller, and Paige Tuttle. Tre'Niya placed fourth individually out of 183 competitors! Dairy Handler Abria Chadwick placed seventh in her heat! It was a great day of practicing vital skills that are used daily in the Dairy Industry. We are so proud of our students in the Animal Science Pathway!

The CTE Department is offering a self-paced course designed for school counselors and Career and College Managers working in Guilford County middle and high schools. Using the resource, The Power and Promise of Pathways How to Prepare All American Students for Career and Life Success, learners will:

  1. Understand how Career Development and CTE Benefits all students
  2. Maximize student involvement in Guilford County Career and Technical Education
  3. Build strong work-based learning experiences for students with business and industry
