Phoenix claims second national title in program history

Phoenix (AZ) claims the program's second ever national title in the third-ever Division II women's soccer championship.

Arianna Leamons netted two-goals for the Bear's in a 4-0 win over No. 1 Holmes. While Goalkeeper Jennifer Avillar had a clean-sheet with 5 saves.

POOL PLAY STORYLINES

Holmes came into the tournament as the No. 1 seed and faced of against No. 8 Schoolcraft on the final day for a spot in the semifinals. The Bulldogs prevail 3-3 (5-3 PKs).
Phoenix was the No. 2 seed a was able to beat No. 11 South Suburban and No. 7 Southwestern Illinois for a spot in the semifinals.
The No. 6 seed Jones was able to advance out of Pool C after an upset win of No. 3 Heartland on the final day of pool play.
Northwest Mississippi eantered as the No. 4 seed and was able to beat No. 9 Northeast and No. 5 Pima to move into the semifinals.

After an exciting three days of pool play, the stage was set for a pair of competitive semifinal matches for a trip to the big stage, and they did not disappoint.

In the first semifinal, two Mississippi schools faced off in an instant classic as No. 1 Holmes was able get by No. 6 Jones 2-1 in double overtime.

The second semifinal saw No. 2 Phoenix get pass No. 4 Northwest Mississippi 2-0 to set-up a rematch of the 2020 NJCAA DII Women's Soccer Championship match with Holmes.

TOURNAMENT AWARDS

Guiding the Bears to their second title in school history, Chris Sager earned the Coach of the Tournament award.

Cape Fear collected the tournament's Sportsmanship Award for its respectable play and attitude on and off the field.
