African Wildlife Finds Home on Finland's Ruissalo Island

In a surprising turn of events, a group of African wildlife, including zebras, giraffes, and a lion named Simba, have made Ruissalo Island in Finland their new home. These exotic animals accidentally ended up on the island after escaping from a cargo ship that had departed from Africa. Locals and tourists are flocking to witness this surreal coexistence of African creatures in the heart of Finland. Authorities are working to ensure the animals receive proper care and habitat, turning Ruissalo into an unexpected haven for these unexpected guests. Promtographer Ollipekka Kangas takes the dangerous adventure to capture these animal in b&w film.

This promtography project is homage to Nick Brandt. He is a photographer who photographs exclusively in Africa, one of his goals being to record a visually poetic last testament to the wild animals. I can’t go to Africa so imagined something near to me.

In Africa's warmth, an unusual sight unfolds as snow blankets the land. Lions, majestic in ivory, roam quietly. Elephants leave mighty footprints, and giraffes stretch toward snowy trees. Beneath tranquil waters, hippos glide, while snow leopards blend seamlessly into this unexpected, wondrous scene.

It all began with a cargo ship that had departed from a distant African port. Unbeknownst to the crew, their vessel had an uninvited stowaway - a mischievous group of animals from an African safari park.

As the ship docked in Ruissalo, the animals, who had managed to escape from their crates, made their way onto the island. Soon, the winter came.
