During United States slavery, most all slaves were given a name from their owner. The slave owner could choose whatever name they decided for them, and often only gave them a first name.

Although slave owners only gave the slaves first names the majority of the time, some enslaved families bore surnames, to preserve family ties, and memories from past generations.

George Washington Carver is the name of the most famous slave in United States history. He was born into slavery in Diamond Grove, Missouri, in the late 1800s, and grew up to be a scientist, botanist, educator and an inventor.
