Serving students, businesses, and communities to meet workforce demands.

Jordan Pollock- Agriculture Teacher

FLAHS students have been busy in our greenhouse, planting over 15,000 plants in preparation for our school's annual plant sale. Students are learning plant identification, propagation, and care all while preparing for our annual plant sale beginning May 7.- Jordan Pollock

Students in Jordan Pollock's Greenhouse Technology course not only spend their class time in our greenhouse learning about plant care, but they are also learning the science of how a greenhouse efficiently functions, and the skills necessary to operate a business through the annual plant sale. Additionally, students have the opportunity to earn college credit for this course through Hennepin Technical College.

What's the next frontier for the agriculture department? Farm to table vegetable garden production. During the first phase of the project, the Rice Creek Watershed District, City of Forest Lake, Bolton & Menk, and Forest Lake Area School District worked together (with funding provided by MN Board of Soil and Water Resources) to install cisterns that will collect rainwater to irrigate the vegetable gardens. Next, students in our Landscape Design course will build raised garden beds, ready them for planting, and earn more college credits through Hennepin Technical College.

Jack Walde & Emily Bromert- Class of 2021

By the end of the year, I will have taken 5 college credit bearing business courses while also earning my IC3 (digital literacy) Certification, Business Essential Certificate and eventually my Microsoft Office Specialist Certification... all for free. The best part is I discovered my interest in business and health care administration.- Emily Bromert

Forest Lake Area High School has added two new business/information technology certification opportunities for students in the last two months. Both Jack and Emily recently earned their IC3 (Internet Core Competency) Certification and are now working on their Microsoft Office Specialist Certifications. All of their hard work has paid off too! In the fall, Jack and Emily will be beginning their business related majors at the Carlson School of Management (U of MN- Twin Cities). Through our Ranger U concurrent enrollment courses, Jack and Emily have earned over 70 college credits between the two of them without ever leaving our high school. Talk about business sense!

Waverly Gardens: Providing Opportunities for our CNA Students

Prior to the pandemic, we looked forward to hosting clinicals for students from Forest Lake Area High School who are working toward their Certified Nursing Assistant certification. We've paused that plan for now, but still believe in providing students opportunities in health care... whether we are hiring students or exposing them to their opportunities, we are excited to partner with Forest Lake's Career Launch programming.- Emilee Simonson

Not only does Waverly Gardens (presbyterian homes & services) provide great employment opportunities for our students who have earned their CNA, they will also hire the uncertified student and pay for their training. Forest Lake Area High School is fortunate to have Waverly Gardens as a partner in providing our students interested in health care a variety of experiential learning opportunities and employment.

Students who are taking advantage of our CNA, EMR, and/or EMT certification opportunities at our high school are setting themselves up for success. These students are also earning healthcare related college credit through Pine Technical and Community College. Currently, four of the top ten jobs in demand are related to heath care. With our aging population, demand will remain high.
