national sorry day

Today is National Sorry Day – a day to acknowledge the trauma experienced by survivors of the Stolen Generations and encourage healing within our Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities. Today, let’s take the time to remember the past policies of forced removal of children and reflect on the experiences of the survivors of the Stolen Generation. Let’s also reflect on the resilience, generosity and contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to our society and culture.

Children listened to stories of the Stolen Generation and Years 4-6 created a Healing Walk.

Premier's Reading challenge

Students in Years 3-6 are reminded that the Premier's Reading Challenge is underway. There are also over a 100 new books that have been added to the reading list this term. Click here to access the book lists.

national simultaneous storytime

On Wednesday at 11 am, Newrybar Public School students joined in the annual National Simultaneous Storytime. This year's book, 'The Speedy Sloth', was read by 2,357,960 people in Australia across schools, preschools, homes and many other places simultaneously.

Photographer Visit

The senior class were excited to have a visit from Australian Geographic photographer Georgina Steytler. Georgina is a nature photographer with a passion for birds. She allowed us to take pictures using her huge camera lens and she also shared the images of birds that she has published in her book. Georgina kindly donated a copy of her book for our library.

Thank you to Georgina Steytler for the generous donation of her beautiful book for our school library.

K-1 Maths

We have been learning about chance and using the language of probability. The K-1 students had fun creating our 'Never-Ever Book', fillng it with things that we know are impossible.

rock and water program

The Senior Class have been learning about the ‘Zones of Regulation’ and how to apply them in and out of the classroom. They have also commenced the Rock and Water program and have discussed the tough, immovable rock attitude versus the mobile, communicative water attitude. This concept can be applied at various levels: the physical, the mental and the social level. Our students have also started to practise grounding, centering and focusing and they have learnt how to stand firm and relaxed whilst concentrating on their breath and focusing on attention.

stage 3 leadership day

Fun was had by Year 5& 6 students at the Stage 3 Leadership Day at Ocean Shores Public School. Students had the opportunity to collaborate with students from the Valley of Smal Schools. The day was aimed at teaching students to mix with one another, and work together using a number of team building skills. The day was enjoyed by all.

K-3 Inquiry

This term, we have been learning about how our grandparents lived, learned and played. Students had a visit from Laurel, Mrs Ruskin's mum, who talked about life as a child growing up on a nearby farm and going to a small school. Students heard stories of her riding her horse to school and having to milk cows when she got home. After Laurel's visit, we played games that our grandparents may have played when they were children.

Sporting Schools Tennis

Our students have been enjoying tennis coaching lessons for sport. Our coaches will continue to help us in developing our tennis skills throughout the term.

K-1 Maths

K-1 have been learning to use the jump-strategy to add and subtract. Blocks and number lines help us to develop these skills. We also have fun moving and counting to numbers beyond 100.

4-6 English

We are really enjoying our new novel 'Someone Like Me'. One of the main characters has moved to Australia from Northern Ireland, so to better understand this character, we spent time investigating this country.

4-6 maths

Students leaned about 2D and 3D Spatial Structures in the environment before creating a scaled model of a futuristic city.

COVID UPDATE

We are continuing our COVID-smart measures.

Thank you for your continued support in helping to keep our students, staff and community safe while COVID-19 is still circulating in the community. With winter approaching, we will also see an increase in respiratory illnesses and by working together, we will keep our school community healthy this term.

Our COVID-smart measures continue to be in place to help reduce the risk of transmission for students and staff members and are vital in allowing us to keep our schools operational while prioritising student and staff wellbeing. These measures include:

  • Staying home if unwell and test for COVID-19 if showing any symptoms
  • Strongly encouraging masks to be worn by all students, staff and visitors, particularly when indoors or outdoors when physical distancing is difficult to maintain, and if exposed to COVID-19
  • Maintaining natural ventilation with windows and doors open whenever possible, including when cooling/heating systems are in use
  • Continuing to provide RATs and other hygiene products to schools free of charge.
