Coming from around the United States, Southeastern's 32 new students arrived with excitement on Monday, August 21. From California, Ohio, Alabama and many states in between, these students have surrendered to the leading of the Holy Spirit to come to Southeastern and prepare for what God has for their future. It was a joyous time as moms and dads, grandparents, pastors and youth pastors shared in their student's journey. It is a rare occasion that a freshmen class has the opportunity to mark the beginning of their college career with a solar eclipse.
Student prayer captains, society leaders, ensemble members, youth camp representatives and student government members all came together as student leaders on August 16-19 for the Annual Student Leadership Summit. This year, the summit was held in Colonial Williamsburg at the Williamsburg Christian Retreat Center. A combination of events ranging from team building games, prayer meetings, leadership book reviews, student group planning sessions all contributed to students being equipped and excited to lead the 2017/18 student body in the Christ-centered direction that Southeastern is known for. Timothy Sexton (Omega president) stated, "This summit has been special to me because it has equipped me in the areas of leadership that I need to learn now and for the rest of my ministry."
Once students were settled in on Monday, the student leaders hosted a coming together meeting in the gymnasium. Students introduced themselves, followed by an archery tag tournament and an old school six on six basketball game (Oklahoma style).
“This school year has already shaped up to be exciting! Some of it may be due to being accepted by TRACS and finding ourselves on the path to full accreditation. But, much of the excitement has to do with our student leaders. Our Director of Development, Steve Berry and his wife Cindy sponsored our student leaders to Williamsburg, Virginia for the annual Student Leadership Summit. The trip is designed to train our student leaders in areas of leadership and team unity. When they returned, I sensed their enthusiasm for the school year and our incoming Freshmen class. Praise the Lord for a great group of student leaders! I am excited to see how the Lord uses them on and off campus!” - President Marcum
It has begun! Society members of the Omega Rho Beta and Theta Phi Alpha societies welcomed all new students to Southeastern on Monday. Students at Southeastern enjoy the friendly competition and fellowship of life inside a college society. Next week is Rush Week at Southeastern. New students will be encouraged, begged and bribed to join one of the two societies. Then they will enjoy belonging to one of these two societies for the next four years. Choose perspicaciously!
Since Southeastern became a member of TRACS in April of 2017, we have enjoyed learning of alumni who are experiencing the benefits of our accreditation status. Last week, Tulsa Community College accepted credits from Southeastern on behalf of Mikala Wilson. Mikala came to Southeastern from Tulsa Oklahoma, with intentions to attend for one year while asking God to direct her in her calling. After completing her freshman year at Southeastern in 2017, she returned to Oklahoma to continue her education. We at Southeastern rejoice that some of her credits were recognized by a community college as far west as Oklahoma. Have a great year Mikala!
