Making Schtuff a Bit Easier Keyboard Shortcuts on an iPad

If you've forgotten the school even gave you an iPad, ignore everything beyond this point.

Seriously.

If you do use your iPad to type the same phrases over and over again, such as email salutations, interim comments (although no one would ever do that), or something else, you can set up keyboard shortcuts to paste those things into a text field.

For example, I often have to remind ninth graders over and over again what certain comma rules are, so instead of tediously writing the same thing on each paper, I simply add a text box to the margin, type in my own abbreviation, and poof – instant comment.

Here's how to set this up:

1. Open the Settings app on your iPad (it looks like a gear), and then find General. When that menu opens, tap "Keyboard."

2. In the Keyboard menu, tap "Text Replacement."

3. Once the Text Replacement menu opens, tap the + in the very top right-hand corner.

4. You will now see a field with "Phrase" and "Shortcut." Add whatever text you want to create a shortcut for in the Phrase field, and then create a shortcut in the space below it:

Now, whenever I want to add my oft-felt sentiment about my beloved colleague, I simply type the phrase "qbut."

Here are just a few of the shortcuts that I've created:
