Troy School District-Citywide Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration & Day of Service Information

As we prepare for our Citywide MLK Day of Service, the District needs your help! This is a phenomenal event honoring the life of Dr. King that draws hundreds of families, students, staff and residents throughout Troy to perform service projects and learn more about Dr. King’s message. All ages are welcome and able to participate--it's truly a family-oriented event. If you have never participated before, here is the rundown:

8:30am: FREE breakfast and fellowship for all attendees in the Athens cafeteria, 4333 John R. Road.

9:00am: Engaging and all-ages MLK program begins featuring Fox 2 Anchor and Troy High alumni ROOP RAJ as our keynote speaker, along with TSD students and contest winners.

Service projects will begin immediately after the program (typically between 9:30-10:00am, instructions will be provided during the program itself.) For those who have not been a part of our MLK Celebration in the past, it may be hard to visualize how cool this event really is. Here is a student produced video from 2019, which explains some of the activities projects we did and the impact this event has (note: Some of the service projects have changed for this year): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tiPEtpKtQA.This year’s service projects include: Tying Fleece Blankets for patients/veterans, Planting Seedlings of Hope, Assembling Craft Kits for Senior Citizens in Assisted Living, Painting Kindness Rocks, Thank You Notes/Drawings for U.S. Troops and Health Care Workers, Making Ribbons to honor MLK and support cancer patients, Red Cross Blood Drive and much more! See the flyer below!

Fleece Donations Needed for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - Traditionally, the Troy community makes more than 300 fleece no-sew blankets at our MLK Day of Service, and we rely on our residents for donations of fleece. Please consider picking up a donation of fleece and sending it to school with your child. All donations of fleece should be in increments of 2.5 yards (so 2.5 yards, 5 yards, 7.5 yard, 10 yards, etc.) This way, they can match up with another piece without any waste. Thank you!

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Monetary Donations - In order to help make this day a success, we need donations from our families and other Troy residents. If you would like to help and can’t get out to buy fleece, you can also donate funds through SchoolPay in your regular parent account or through the following link: https://www.schoolpay.com/pay/for/MLK-Day-of-Service-Donation/ScrSREl

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Red Cross Blood Drive - If you would like to sign up for a time for the Red Cross Blood Drive in advance, here is the link to secure a spot (walk ins will be taken as space is available, but signing up in advance is strongly encouraged): https://www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/donation-time

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Student Contest - Encouraging our students to think about and express their views on Dr. King’s legacy is an important part of our celebration. Our Superintendent Student Advisory Board students have designed contests in four areas: essay, poetry, video and art/photography. There are prizes (gift cards!) for winners in every category and the winning students will be invited to read their essays/poems and artwork/video/photography will be featured during the event itself. Please encourage your child to enter. See the contest flyer below and this is the link to send entries in: https://forms.office.com/r/CRPhYQ6GZX The deadline is Monday, January 9th at 4pm!

Schroeder 5th Graders Visit Indian Springs Metropark!

The 5th graders visited Indian Springs Metropark located in White Lake, Michigan this week. During their exploration, the students learned more about interactions between the biosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, and atmosphere. The students also learned more about the impact humans have on these systems. All students certainly enjoyed the field trip!

Thank You, Schroeder PTO!

Mrs. Leigh's class received non-fiction books purchased for her class through PTO Mini-Grants. Funds for this grant were made possible through your generous donations received from the Schroeder Jogathon!
