Principal's Report
It is my pleasure to provide you with a summary of the highlights and achievements of Lake Munmorah High School during Term 1.
I am pleased to report that the start of the school year has been positive, with students quickly settling into their new classes and routines. Our dedicated staff work tirelessly to ensure that students receive the highest quality learning possible. In addition to the academic learning, students have had the opportunity to excel in extracurricular activities.
Our school continues to focus on student wellbeing, and we have implemented a range of programs and initiatives to support students’ emotional and social needs. Our aim is to create a supportive and inclusive school community where all students feel safe, known, valued, and cared for.
Please be advised that due to a decrease in student numbers this year (currently sitting at 661), there will be a new timetable issued to all students on their first day back next term (Wednesday 26 April).
Your feedback is invaluable as we continue to look for ways to improve our systems and processes. With the introduction of the new NSW Department of Education (DoE) Student Behaviour Strategy at the start of Term 4 2022, we are due to publish our Student Behaviour Management and Support Plan (SBMSP) at the end of Term 2. We will be reaching out to as many parents and carers as possible early next term to hear your thoughts on our draft plan.

We thank each of them for their service and wish them well in their new endeavours.
Year 7 & 9 NAPLAN was a wonderful success. Thank you to our team of staff who work hard to ensure this was as stress free as possible for everyone involved. Our Literacy and Numeracy teams have seen a big improvement in our students over the past 18 months we eagerly await the results.

HSIE - Faculty Report
What a start to the year we have had in HSIE. We welcomed our Year 7’s who started their journey in HSIE working on their Geographical skills and the topic of Landscapes and Landforms and will be continuing on with Geography in Term 2. Year 8 have been studying the historical period of Medieval Europe, with Year 9 diving into Australians at War, whilst Year 10 studied the Changing Rights and Freedoms here in Australia and The United States of America, with these years continuing on with History in Term 2. Our students should be so extremely proud of their efforts and dedication to start the year, which was reflective in the high-quality assessment tasks received!
We’d also like to share some exciting news, with the permanent appointment of Mrs Selby to the HSIE faculty. She is an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher, and we are very lucky to have her at LMHS. Congratulations Mrs Selby!!
We welcomed our Year 11’s into their first term as seniors, and they have hit the ground running!
Year 11 Business Studies finished off their first topic of the “Nature of Business” and are now feeling more resourceful and equipped in their casual jobs. We are currently studying the topic of ‘Business Management” and will continue into Term 2 with this topic. In class, we have put different management styles to the test, by seeing which management style could produce the most stars – a democratic leadership style was deemed to be the most effective.
Year 11 Legal Studies our students have been busily working through the 1st core topic “The Legal System” recently completing their first assessment task where they had to create a media portfolio finding media articles that relate to several of the legal concepts we have covered in the course so far.
Year 11 Modern History began their studies with an examination of the American Civil War, and the impact of varying social and economic differences in the United States. They have delved into some source analysis, and look forward to moving into the Cuban Revolution next term.
Year 11 Society and Culture have just finished their first topic "Social and Cultural World" and are probably still pondering social constructs. We have started our new topic "Personal and Social Identity." To get the students to start looking in, they were asked to design a face mask with symbols, colours and other items that represent their identity.
Year 11 Work Studies have successfully completed their first module of the course “In the Workplace”. Throughout this module, each of the students have conducted an interview with an employee within an industry of their interest. This has sparked motivation for the students to move forward with their career aspirations. We have successfully moved onto “Preparing Job Applications”, this module allows the students to engage with employment agencies and begin the process of creating resumes, cover letters and applying for jobs. Each of the students in the class have been working hard, completing their assigned tasks and demonstrating their learnt skills.
As our Year 12’s enter their last year of school, they are experiencing a world of emotions but their focus and determination to strive for excellence in their final year is commendable!
Year 12 Ancient History have been studying the Bronze Age society of the Minoans who occupied Crete. They’ve developed a deep knowledge of archaeological sources, and how these can be used as evidence to support historical arguments. We look forward to moving into our Egypt topics next term.

Year 12 Business Studies undertook the topic of “Marketing” this term. To understand the various Marketing Strategies used at Taronga Zoo, our students attended “Zoo Business” to learn the in’s and out’s of this successful business as well as patting some cute friends along the way.
Year 12 Legal Studies our Legal Studies students completed their Human Rights Assessment task at the end of term 4 last year and have been completing their other core topic “crime” this term. Students have just submitted their crime assessment task where they looked at a range of famous criminal cases and conducted research about one particular case.

Year 12 Society and Culture, after a depth study on Continuity and Change in Saudi Arabia, Year 12 have just started a topic called "Social Inclusion and Exclusion." They were tasked with making a display card for a related depth study concept and use playdough to represent the concept. Their creativity has amazed Mrs Andrews!
We hope all our students have an enjoyable Easter Break and come back feeling refreshed and ready for a big Term 2. Term 2 in HSIE will see excursions for Year’s 7, 9, 11 and 12 so please keep an eye open for these permission notes as we would love to see as many students as possible attending these beneficial excursions!

Students participated in a range of different dances and used these for inspiration to choreograph and preform a dance routine for their Semester One Practical Assessment. We saw some great dance routines over the two days of performances. In theory they studied Road Safety, Media, Marketing and Health.
Creative and Performing Arts - Faculty Report
The CAPA faculty have hit the ground running for term 1 here at Lake Munmorah High School. Miss Dyball has returned and we welcome Mr Saggus who is teaching Music. It has been wonderful to welcome back students new and old this year in our subjects, Music, Visual Arts, Photography, Dance and Drama. Our classrooms and studio spaces have been engaging in lots of creating.
Our HPGE creative groups SHINE Fine Arts, Music, Dance and Drama have been busy establishing for a year of activities and opportunities.
Dance
Miss Dyball is facilitating SHINE Dance and SHINE Drama. SHINE Dance has commenced with strength and has 20 students in the ensemble. The dance students have been accepted into ‘Star Struck - Ignite’, which is performed at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre on the 16th and 17th of June. Students begin learning their two dances in week 1 of next term. Miss Dyball was successful in application to choreograph an item for Star Struck. This means one of the dance items for our students will be choreographed by their teacher. LMHS dance students are in Cast B and tickets go on sale through Ticketek from May 1st. SHINE Dance are also working on developing a contemporary dance for Hunter Dance Festival.
Four dancers from our SHINE dance group attended the first Hunter Region Dance Camp. The camp was held a Glenrock and dancers participated in several dance workshops over the two days. Ila, Alleah, Zoe and Chloe engaged well in developing their dance technique and skills. These girls represented Lake Munmorah with excellence.
Drama
SHINE Drama has established an energetic and dynamic drama ensemble. This group of students from Year 7 to Year 10 have started building their practical skills through theatre sports and improvisation activities. Term 2 will see the commencement of a school play, which will be developed during term 2 and performed during term 3 this year. It is very exciting to see such a talented group of students interested in Drama.
Visual Arts
Year 7 and 8 Visual Arts have been completing practical artmaking tasks studying the artists Yayoi Kusama, Dawn Tan, Trevor Dickinson and Howard Arkley. Students have successfully been exploring the expressive forms of illustration, watercolour and acrylic painting.
Year 10 Visual Arts have been exploring Academic Art, Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. They have created a number of small canvas paintings inspired by Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters and have begun painting landscapes in paint boxes.
Year 11 and 12 Visual Arts are in the thick of completing their portfolios and body of work that form the practical component of the course. So far this term they have experimented with printmaking, photography, sculpture and illustration with pencil and ink.
Music
The music classrooms and practice rooms have been very productive to commence the year. All music students have completed their composition assessment task for term 1. Students were challenged to create their own melody and some really great work was produced. Year 12 Music class have worked well on their HSC work after completing their second task. The new ‘Rock band’ elective has started well with students enthusiastic about the practical music opportunities.
Congratulations to our new SHINE Music students. They have been developing their musical skills since arriving in the group. There will be a SHINE Music performance evening on the 9th of May at the Bowlo. This will be a wonderful opportunity for family and friends to see what their child has been working on in Shine.
Lastly, CAPA is very excited about the sound, lighting and vision upgrade being finalized in our school hall over these holidays. This will see our hall become a very professional performance and entertainment space. We can not wait to put some shows on for the community!

Science - Faculty Report
As we approach the end of Term 1, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the exciting activities and learning experiences that have taken place in the Science department.
Our Year 12 Physics students have been hard at work on their depth study, where they were tasked with building a working motor. It has been great to see the creativity and problem-solving skills they have displayed throughout the project.
Meanwhile, our Year 11 Earth and Environmental Science students went on an educational excursion to the Sydney Museum, where they gained a deeper understanding of the Earth's history and the impact of human activity on our environment. I would like to extend a big thankyou to Miss Hudson for organising this opportunity for our students.
In Year 7 Science, our students have been learning about particle theory and the properties of solids, liquids and gases. They have also been developing their practical skills in the laboratory through a range of experiments. We are delighted to see the enthusiasm they have shown for science and look forward to the upcoming Zoo Snooze excursion in term 2, which has now reached capacity.
Our Year 8 students have been exploring the concepts of energy and electricity, while Year 9 have been delving into waves, light and the electromagnetic spectrum. Year 10 have been learning about Newton's Laws and Electricity, and we are impressed with the level of engagement and understanding they have shown in class.
On a final note, we were thrilled to meet several parents at the recent parent-teacher interview night. It is always wonderful to see such a strong partnership between the school and families in supporting the learning journey of our students.
Thank you to all our staff and students for a fantastic term of science learning, and we look forward to the exciting opportunities ahead.

English - Faculty Report
Year 7 English
Students have been exploring the concept of Identity in Term 1, as a smooth transition into High School. This study involved students exploring different aspects of what makes up identity. These included: culture, religion, personality traits, social groups (family, friends) etc. These new ideas and insights were then collaborated to create a Writing Portfolio for their first assessment. This involved students’ diligence in following a planning document, creating a draft and submitting for feedback, tackling their first annotation and combining this all together for a dated submission. Thus far, Year 7 has shown great promise in their engagement in their studies!
Year 8 English
Over the course of this term, Year 8 have been enthusiastically taking part in a unit study of Poetry. This study has focused on the many ways writers are able to express themselves through a range of poetic techniques. For their assessment task, Year 8 students created a variety of well-composed poems, presenting them in the form of a portfolio in order to showcase their knowledge, and new-found understanding of the topic.
Passion Project: The Beauty Industry
Year 8 Beauty Industry students have been enthusiastically participating in a range of practical and theoretical activities to develop their knowledge and skills in hair styling, makeup and nail care. Students have been practicing hair styling using life size doll heads and experimenting with special effects makeup. With a partner, students designed and created natural body scrubs made from coffee, sugar and coconut oil. They created the scrub, made the label and an advertisement to sell the scrub. I have been impressed with the positivity the girls bring to each lesson and I am proud of the ways they support each other and share their ideas.
Year 9 English
Term 1 has been a busy and productive term for Year 9 English students. Students have engaged in a genre study, and learnt about the conventions of the comedy, horror, and science fiction genres. They have written TXXXC essays in timed conditions and engaged in close studies of texts.
Year 9 also completed their final NAPLAN tests.
Year 10 English
This term, Year 10 students have engaged in the close study of a novel to develop their understanding of literary features and build upon their skills in analytical writing. Students across the cohort studied: 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee; 'Raw' by Scott Monk; and 'The Simple Gift' by Steven Herrick. Congratulations goes out to all students who completed the in-class examination with diligence and respect for their peers. The English Staff are very proud of this positive start to the school year.
Year 11 Standard English
Students have started their senior years by creating a writing portfolio. They have explored a variety of texts in the classroom and at home, to compose a creative story of their own. This unit is always exciting as students become connoisseurs of fine writing, breaking quality texts apart to discover what truly makes them unique.
Year 12 Standard English
Year 12 Standard students have just completed their second HSC Task which was an in-class essay based on the award-winning novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Mrs Wirz and Miss Kaye are both very proud of the rich discussions and hard work that students have put into their work to achieve their personal best.
Year 12 Advanced English
In this term, our Year 12 Advanced students have completed their second module of their HSC. The students explored the ways in which the comparative study of texts can reveal resonances and dissonances between and within texts. Students considered the ways that a reimagining or reframing of an aspect of a text might mirror, align or collide with the details of another text. In their textual studies, they also explored common or disparate issues, values, assumptions or perspectives and how these are depicted. By comparing two texts, Hag Seed written by Margaret Atwood and Shakespeare's The Tempest, in an analytical essay, students have demonstrated a greater understanding of how composers (authors, poets, playwrights, directors, designers and so on) are influenced by other texts, contexts and values, and how this shapes meaning.
Sport Report
Students across LHMS have been busy with all things sport during Term 1.
We started with the School Swimming Carnival, using a ‘Competitors Only’ format, we saw some amazing sportsmanship, comraderie and swimming. It was great to see so many of our students achieving PBs and all while having a giant smile on their face.
A special mention to our swimming age champions, G. Marsh, H. Clayton, F. White, G. Head, J. Clayton, K. Bull, M. Goldie, N. Phillips, E. Stuart.
An even bigger congratulations to Georgia M and Tamatea T who made it to Hunter Regional Swim Meet.
Week 7 was our Running Festival where we started the day with our school cross country event and finished the day with a colour run. We saw some speedy running in the cross country and students really pushing themselves to complete the course. The Colour Run was all about colour, bubbles, water, music and laughter, lots of laughter. Students and teachers alike were coloured from head to toe.
The special mention to our cross country champions, Henry C, Nixon B, Charlee D, Riley S, Billy C, Chelsea A, Blake K, Georgie H, Mason G, Tea R, Kallen M, Alyssa B, Ryan Y and Zara B.
We have also had some excellent results from our team sports across several different gala days.
Netball
Congratulations to our Open Girls Netball Team who competed at the Eastlakes Gala day. We had a tough game against Hunter Sport to begin with, but found our feet and had wins against Swansea and Belmont. The girls demonstrated excellent sportsmanship throughout the day, assisting with umpiring and even lending a player to assist another school who were short a teammate and almost had to forfeit the day. The girls were a credit to Lake Munmorah High School.
Aboriginal Education
Yaama All!

Green Class
This term students in the Green class have been exploring various locations in the community. They went on a walk through the mangroves at Swansea where they enjoyed seeing a variety of plants and animals.
They have enjoyed conducting experiments in Science.
Congratulations goes to Harrisson for his participation in the LMHS Cross Country where he came in 3rd place.
Gold Class
The Year 7 Gold class has settled remarkably well into life at Lake Munmorah High School during Term 1. The application they have shown across all subjects has been excellent, whether it be working on telling the time in mathematics or engaging in a workout routine in the Fitlab. They have also been developing a range of important life skills on community access and in the kitchen during their cooking program. The students have made a great addition to the school, and we look forward to seeing them continue to grow and learn.
White Class
The White Class have been participating in walking for Community Access. Over the last twelve months, they have been walking sections of the Fernleigh Track. They finally finished this last month and totalled 30km there and back over the year. The class has now decided to tackle walking around Lake Macquarie and Tuggerah Lakes. Our project started last week where the class walked along Speers Point. The class is looking forward to accomplishing these new goals, whilst keeping fit and learning about the local geography.
Silver Class
The Silver class have continued to impress me with their dedication and hard work. They are engaged in their learning, with many Year 8 students also enjoying the variety of extra-curricular activities on offer including lots of new activities this year such as the Bowling.
I would like to congratulate all students on their resilience, determination, courage,
and strength to support each other and continue to demonstrate respect and kindness thus reflecting our school motto “Setting the Standard”. Please enjoy a restful holiday period with your family and friends and I will see you after the break for another action-packed term.
Red Class
Firstly, I would like to thank and acknowledge the efforts of the Red class during Term 1. They have approached their initial start to being the leaders of the Support Unit with maturity. I encourage them to ensure they maintain this throughout the year.
• How am I feeling?
• What’s going right?
• What can I improve?
• What do I need?
• What can I let go of?
• What am I grateful for?
Students in the Red class are often asked to reflect on the above questions and ask themselves these key questions and seek support if required. There are numerous places to access assistance and teachers who are always willing to ensure students are safe, happy and settled.
Purple Class
This term our class engaged in a variety of learning activities including cooking, art, history, and writing. We visited the Entrance Long Jetty RSL Sub-Branch Museum and enjoyed learning about primary and secondary sources, artefacts, morse code and the involvement of women in WWI.

Year Advisor Reports
Year 8 - Mr Aaron Bolte
Welcome back Year 8 LMHS students to what has been a busy Term 1, 2023. Firstly, I’d like to recognise Mrs Anna Martin who has done a fantastic job with you all during Year 7, 2022. I’ve been fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to take over as Year 8 Advisor this year and I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead (I have plenty of experience in the Wellbeing team as I have been Year Advisor on a few occasions in the past).
We held an important Year 8 meeting this term to explain important expectations and processes, bullying & harassment (conflict resolution pink forms), attendance, positive rewards system and trying your best in daily classes. I also spoke about any major welfare and wellbeing problems that arise day to day, to contact me as Year 8 Advisor and access the Wellbeing Hub if needed (where the Wellbeing Team can support our LMHS students).
We have some great wellbeing programs that run at LMHS. The ‘Life Changer’ program is currently running each week this term for Year 8 students; allowing young people and local community mentors to connect and interact to help build an inclusive and resilient LMHS community. I have recently consulted staff about some potential student leaders in Year 8 (we have many to choose from which is great). The nominated students can join the LMHS Junior Leadership team through an approved application form where selected students’ voices and action plans will contribute to future directions and running of our school.
The new positive rewards system is up and running and we are always recognising the daily positive behaviours and achievements our LMHS students are doing in class. We will be organising a rewards excursion for nominated students who have positive mentions soon (commendations through Sentral entries from LMHS staff). There are also weekly prizes given out when students hand in their accumulated gotchas.
Lastly, we can support our LMHS Year 8 students if we encourage regular attendance, good sleep, limiting device time, nutritious meals, regular exercise and getting into positive routines at home. Any problems, please do not hesitate to call or email me at school.
Year 10 - Miss Emily Davis
What a busy start to the year! Our Year 10's hit the ground running for 2023, engaging with a number of wellbeing programs and initiatives! In particular the Teen Mental Health First Aid Course was a massive success with a number of Year 10 students attending this amazing workshop and leaving with a wealth of knowledge on a really important topic that will be able to be used in the future.
In addition, our Year 10 Peer Support Leaders have been busy engaging with our new Year 7 cohort and showing them the ropes! (especially at the Raw Challenge). Our Year 10's were in charge of taking the Year 7's through a variety of fun and challenging sporting activities for a period with a number of staff commenting on their maturity and leadership abilities! Great job peer support leaders!
I was also lucky enough to accompany some of these peer support leaders on the Year 7 Raw Challenge Excursion and was able to see these leadership qualities at first hand. It was really awesome to see the teamwork demonstrated by all involved and especially the Year 10 students encouraging and helping out the Year 7's when needed!
Year 11 - Mrs Sarah Patterson
What a great start to the Year seeing so many of our Year 11 students return to school. I have been super proud of their effort and approach. Students have been actively supported by the Wellbeing Team and Ms Speer with assessment preparation, assessment folders and calendar schedules. If you would like more support don’t forget to utilise the study periods within our Resource Centre with Ms Speer.
This Term our Senior Jersey arrived, and it has been wonderful to see students proudly wearing the item. I would loke to congratulate our Senior Jersey working party for all their hard work in the design and coordination of Charlotte Fernando and Mia- Rose Debono design.
“The 3 bigger meeting places represent the high schools in our area and the smaller ones represent our feeder primary schools. We chose the colour blue to represent the land of water (sea tribes), the green dots represent the Torres’s Strait Islander people while the Red/Yellow represent everyone else. As a group we included the Stingray as our Totem” Mia-Rose Debono.
Our Order #2 has been completed and we are expecting it to be deliver around the end of May. At the start of 2024 we will have another opportunity for students to purchase, however if we are unable to place an order of more than 10 items these Jersey will incur a $10 extra cost.
Wishing all of Year 11 a very Happy Easter and look forward to seeing you Term 2.
Mrs Patterson (Patto)
Year 12 - Mr Malcolm Van Drempt
Congratulations year 12. We have accomplished reaching the half-way point of your HSC. The term started with a positive result in our Valentine’s Day fundraiser. We raised around $570 in profits. Thank you to the community, students and staff that got on board and helped through time, donations and effort.
The school has now introduced a new fundraising policy, where students need to plan ahead through submitting an application for upcoming events. The application can be found on canvas in the announcements posted. Application forms need to be submitted 4 weeks in advance. Students need to complete this and get it to me or Mr Patrick by Week 1 Term 2 for the Mother’s day fundraiser (an allowance has been made for the school holiday’s). If given approval, the event will go ahead Weeks 3 or 4 next term.
The students are fundraising for their school formal, which has been set for the 23rd of November at Magenta Shore Resort (More details to come). Students were given the opportunity to decide which package they wanted, and they have voted to go with the “Ultimate Package”. This will make it fairly costly ($124 per head) and they plan to offset some of that cost through fundraising.
In other news, I will be absent from school until week 7 next term on paternity leave. Mr Patrick, your Assistant Year Adviser, will be standing in for me in my absence and has previously had experience as a Year Adviser in the past. Any questions regarding student wellbeing, please direct to him until my return.
Happy Easter and have a safe break.
Mr van Drempt
