Spying On Your Family? Jillian Tompkins

Surveillance technology has the ability to monitor and track the activities of individuals and groups, often without their knowledge or consent. This can have serious implications for privacy and security, particularly when it comes to how surveillance tech spies on families via the devices we use on a daily basis.

There are a number of ways in which surveillance tech can spy on families through the devices we use. For example:

  • Smart devices such as phones, tablets, and smart speakers often contain microphones and cameras that can be activated remotely by third parties, potentially allowing them to listen in on conversations or observe activities taking place in the home.
  • Internet of Things (IoT) devices, such as security cameras and smart home devices, can also be used to monitor and track the activities of individuals within the home.
  • Many devices, including phones and laptops, contain location-tracking technology that can be used to monitor an individual's movements and whereabouts.

In many cases, families may not be aware that their devices are being used to spy on them. This can be particularly concerning for individuals who may be targeted for their political beliefs, activism, or other sensitive personal information.

There are several steps you can take to prevent surveillance of your family through the devices you use:

  • Use a privacy-focused operating system: Consider using a privacy-focused operating system, such as Tails or Qubes, which are designed to protect your privacy and anonymity.
  • Use a virtual private network (VPN): A VPN encrypts your internet traffic, making it more difficult for third parties to monitor your online activity.
  • Enable two-factor authentication: Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security to your accounts by requiring a second form of authentication in addition to your password.
  • Use encrypted messaging apps: Use encrypted messaging apps, such as Signal or WhatsApp, to communicate with your family. These apps use end-to-end encryption to protect your conversations from being intercepted.
  • Be cautious about the information you share online: Be mindful of the information you share online, especially personal information such as your address, phone number, and date of birth.
  • Keep your devices and software up to date: Make sure to keep your devices and software up to date with the latest security patches.
  • Use a firewall: A firewall can help protect your devices from unauthorized access and prevent malicious traffic from entering your network.

By following these steps, you can reduce the risk of your family being monitored through the devices you use. It's important to be vigilant and take steps to protect your privacy online.
