What is the Democratic National Committee (DNC)?

  • runs the Democratic Party organization
  • assists and supports candidates throughout the country
  • manages party strategy
  • organizes party conventions
  • composes the party platform
  • raises funds
young voters = ages 18-29

About 27% of voters 18-29 years old turned out in the 2022 midterms. 63% of them voted for Democratic candidates for the House of Representatives.

According to The New York Times

an ABC News headline
When young people vote, they usually vote Democrat. Let's turn them out.

#NewYearNewVote deliverables for January 2023

  1. register 500,000 Americans ages 18-29
  2. get the Democratic Party Instagram account (@thedemocrats) to 1 million followers (they currently have 447,000 followers)
  3. get the Democratic Party Twitter account (@TheDemocrats) to 3 million followers (they currently have 2.3 million followers)

The DNC will partner with Democratic officials at the national and state level to raise awareness about the importance of voting and the difference it can make. These partnerships and shared messaging will be in service of achieving goals: to register 500,000 young Americans and raise the profile of the Democratic Party on social media.

Measuring success

At the end of Jan. 2023, we will be able to measure our success by whether or not we achieved these deliverables.

#NewYearNewVote content plan

  • Daily 1-minute Instagram reels featuring Democratic officials. Clips will be from Youtube, the news, their social media, etc. Goal is to showcase the Democratic leaders already holding office.
  • Instagram Live every Tuesday at 8 p.m. Eastern of a featured Democratic Party young official talking about the importance of voting.

SWOT Analysis

Strengths

  • The Democratic Party is doing well with young voters, and there is potential to do even better.
  • The DNC already has a strong Twitter presence, with 2.3 million followers. They also post regularly on Instagram.
  • Our goals are actionable: increasing our reach and registering new voters.

Weaknesses

  • Many young people still don't turn out.
  • Will be a challenge to reach out to young people tuned out of politics.
  • People might be resistant to paying attention to political messages after the midterms.

Opportunities

  • The Democratic Party still has ground to gain with Gen Z turnout. This can be the beginning of a long-term effort to engage young voters.
  • Based on the 2022 midterm returns, young voters tend to lean left. This is an opportunity to turn more of them out.

Threats

  • There is potential for the Republican Party to recognize the power of Gen Z at the ballot box. They may try to reach out to young people. This will be a source of competition for us.
